Royals season record
reads dozen victories
The Exeter Royals improved their
South Western Fastball League
record to 12 wins and three losses last
Thursday as they edged West Corners
5 to 4.
West Corners broke on top in the
first inning as Ron Steeper reached
base with a one out walk and later
scored on a Rob Thoman single.
They increased their lead in the se-
cond inning to two runs on two walks
and a run scoring single. Three con- .
secutive singles in the fifth by Lee.
'Thoman and Hodgins produced a
third run.
Van Alien
top shooter
David Van Allen recorded a score
of 24 to lead the competition in Sun-
day's trap shoot sponsored by the
claybird gun club.
Close behind with 23 apiece were
Jody Mosurinjohn and Russ Gibson.
Following were Doug Moore 20. Perry
Maschke 19. Steve Venner 18. Kevin
Finnie 16, Sandy Gibson 15 and John
Conrad four.
The Royals managed a run in the
bottom of the fi`th as Will Lamb who
led off by reaching on an error, even-
tually came around to score.
West Corners regained their three
run lead by scoring a run in the top
of the seventh on three hits and a
base on balls.
The Royals finally solved starting
and losing pitcher Bill Hodgins in the
Slopitch scores
The weatherman has been good to
Exeter ladies slo-pitch as all games
have been proceeding as scheduled.
July 18 games had Canadian Tire
over JJ's 15-3, Good Times took
Huron Park Devils 9-1 and Sun -
downers defeated Downtown Dollies
11-6. lndianettes downed Albatross
Angels 15-3.
Gaines scheduled for July 25 have
Sundowners vs Canadian Tire at 7
p.m.. Good Times vs JJs at 8;30 and
Downtown Dollies vs Exeter Indianet-
tes at 10 p.m. All games in Exeter on
Diamond Two.

winning run to score.
Dan Heywood picked up the com-
plete game victory. He gave up eight
hits, walked seven and struck out five.
The Royals next game will be
Thursday night in Exeter at 9:00
against third place Nairn.
Exciting golf
with foursomes
After an extended rain delay.
another exciting two -ball foursome
was enjoyed by 18 hardy golfers Fri-
day evening at Ironwood.
This long warm-up proved quite
beneficial to Linda Steele and Jamie
Gaul who combined for a record low
score of 40 to capture first prize.
The hotly contested second position
was awarded to Carolyn Gilfi_ tan
$ill-Steele=ar count back. The
twosomes of Karen Gaul and Randy
Gilfillan and Kim Pinder and Brad
Murray also recorded the commen-
dable scores of 45.
Mary D'Anna and Lee Webber and
Fran Mickle and Ken Pinder enjoyed
their adventuresome rounds receiv-
ing the "prizes" in tribute to their
talents.
In an attempt to outsmart the local
weatherman, the next event has been
moved up one week and everyone is
invited. to attend, Friday, July 26 at
5:30 p.m.
Local pool
hosts meet

The Exeter Swimming Pool hosed
the first ICSA t Inter County Swim
Association) swim meet of the year
last Saturday, July 1:3. In attendance
at the meet were St. Marys. Huron
Park. Vanastra and Exeter.
All teams put forth a good effort
and the final results were as follows:
1st, Exeter 446; 2nd, St. Marys 236:
3rd, Vanastra, 218; 4th, Huron Park.

In a meet at Clinton this Saturday.
the Exeter team placed second with
339 points. The host club won with a
total of 532.
The Vanastra squad ended up in
third with 198 and Seaforth brought up
the rear with 109,

The Small Craft safety Mobile
Team from the Canadian Red Cross
Society will be visiting the Exeter
Swimming Pool on Thursday. August
1 at 1:00. They will be giving a
demonstration on small craft safety.
Everyone is welcome, so I hope
you'll come out, and make the rest of
your summer a safe one.

Local bowlers advance
A team from the Exeter Lawn bowl-
ing club has qualified for the second
consecutive year for the Ontario
championships.
Pete McFalls, Marshall Dearing
and Sam Bower will represent the
local club at the Elmwood lawn bowl-
ing club in London on August 3 with
games beginning at 9 a.m.
In the zone finals in Sarnia Satur-
day, the Local threesome after losing
their first game to Woodstock 18-11
carne on strong to win four straight
times and gain the right to advance
to the provincial playdowns.
In their second start. the Exeter
team defeated Sarnia 14-12 and
followed this with a must 16-6 victory
over Wheatley a team which had
already won a pair of games.
At this point Exeter. Wheatley and
Woodstock were all even with two
wins apiece. The playoffs were
shortened to five ends. Exeter down-
ed Wheatley 5-2 and edged Woodstock
4-2 to win the championship.
Spectators are welcome at the pro-
vincial finals in London to see fine
Second week
for pkuyground
The second week of the playground
program went, quickly by with many
interesting activities and fun things to
do, starting on Tuesday with the Bert
'n' Ernies having a Hallowe'en Day.
There were many interesting
costumes including dogs, birds, gyp-
sies, etc.
The children iced pumpkin cookies.
read, acted out spooky stories and
many other . things following the
Hallowe'en theme. The sports club
played such games as frisbee golf and
kite flying ending with bowling in
Huron Park in the afternoon.
Wednesday both clubs were visited
by Gerald Dearing who sheared a
sheep and answered lots and lots of
questions. He also brought along a lit-
tle lamb. This went 'over very well
with all of the children.
Thursday the Bert 'n' Ernies visited
South Huron Hospital and had a
wonderful time. While the sports club
were having a mock olyrnpics as well

as a crazy obstacle course.
This was followed by a game of
Blind volleyball and many other
"new" games.
. Friday was a very exciting day
which was especially enjoyed by
everyone. The hayride to Dearing's
farm was fun and enjoyable with
weather to suit everyone.
In the afternoon both clubs enjoyed
the movie "Gus" about a farm mule
who made it to the big time with his
star kicking ability. An in all our se-
cond week was very successful and
we hope to have many more like it.
CORRECTION
An error appeared in last week's
account of the donations received for
the new lights at the ball diamond at
the community park.
The Exeter Greys donated $200 to
the fund and the Exeter ladies
slowpitch league provided $500.

At the local level this week, ladies
again dominated in two of the three
weekly jitneys.
In Tuesday's action. Olive Hicks
and Rose Blanchard were tied for
first place with two victories, an ag-
gregate of 30 and plus of four. Bill
Rogerson was third with 25 followed
by Emma Campbell and Grace
Cooper at 20, John Cooper 19 and
Stella Taylor 18.
Thursday night it was Mildred
Pearsall with two wins, an aggregate
of 26 and plus of three edging John
Eberle by one aggregate point. Next
were Liz Lamport and Sam Bower.
Bill Rogerson with a score of 29 was
Saturday's winner. Next came
Charlie Smith and Bill Lamport.
Hockey school
for locals
The Huron Hockey School will be
back at the Stephen township arena
for the 16th consecutive year beginn-
ing August 5. Stephen arena manager
Frank Funston reports that registra-
tions are being accepted from local
youngsters wishing to participate in
he third week beginning August 19.
Instructors for the third week will
be Reg Higgs now with the New York
Rangers and former London Knight
Dave Simpson.
Anyone wishing further informa-
tion on the hockey school for local par-
ticipants may call Frank Funston at
228-6425.
The annual summer hockey league
gets underway this Sunday morning
at the Stephen township arena at 9
a.m. with four games on the schedule
each week. Admission is free to watch
these games. Included are teams
from Exeter and surrounding areas,
Hensall, Parkhill, Dublin and London.
