Chinch bugs eat Ieiwns
An infestation of hairy chinch bugs
is turning the green, green grass of
dome into ugly brown stubble.
Residents in the north end of Exeter.
lave had their lawns sprayed profes-
iionally, and garden hoses are now
;oing full blast to wash killing
chemicals on a search and destroy
mission down to the grass roots where
the minute villains have set up their
sabotage headquarters.
Lee Dobbs, whose lawn is one of
many affected.reported this year's in-
vasion is two weeks earlier than
usual.
Hairy chinch bugs, tiny grey and
white specks that grow no longer than
four millimeters, thrive in hot, dry
weather. Though the pests have been
)resent in Ontario for more than 100
Years, they have only been noticeably
damaging lawns for the past decade.
The insects suck the vital sap from
the crowns and stems of lawn
grasses. All common varieties seem
to appeal to their indiscriminate taste
buds. Broad -leaf weeds that infest
many lawns are left unmolested.
Homeowners often attribute to
drought the brown patches left by the
voracious invaders. If you want to
know if an underground army is at
work on your lawn, take a large tin
with both ends cut out and force it in-
to the earth an inch or two. Fill the
tin with water and wait a few
minutes. if chinch bugs are present,
they will come bobbing to the surface.
Left uncontrolled. the bugs can
lestroy a lawn. The only solution then
.s resodding.
An expert adivses that chinch bugs
are easily controlled once discovered.
Either call in the professionals to
spray the lawn. or buy some
Diazinon, read the directions and
carry out the accompanying instruc-
tions. it ii important to either apply
the chemical while the lawn is wet, or
water thoroughly after applying. This
allows the chemical to be more ac-
tive, and keep the bugs near the sur-
face. If the soil is hot and dry and
cracked, the chinch bugs go down in-
to the cooler parts and the insecticide
may not reach them.
Diazinon will also control ear wig.
Mrs. Dobbs said.

MOH doesn't expect
district health council
It is unlikely'that a district health
,council will he formed in Huron Coun-
ty, despite a resgrgence of interest in
the neighbouring county of Perth.
"That doesn't seem to be the direc-
tion this county is taking." said
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Harry
Cieslar.
In the late 1970's, the two counties.
Huron and Perth; combined in a.
steering committee to look into the
possibility of setting up one district
health council for the two counties.
"There doesn't seem to be any
pressure to g after one", said Dr.
Cieslar.
A district health council is made up
of 14 to 24 volunteers who donate their
time and expertise to work with the
ministry of health in planning the
.111eiTr. com-
munity. Its main responsibility is
identify.,loeal_needs, look at alter-
natives. set uppriorities a repare-.
an all encompassing health care pro-
• gram within provincial health
guidelines.
There is a movement afoot in Perth
County to reintroduce the idea of
district health councils.
The Perth District health unit will
be hosting a meeting this fall to find
out if there is enough interest in set-
ting up a steering committee said that
county's medical officer of health, Dr.
Susan Tamblyn.
Dr. Cieslar said the concept of
District Health Councils was discuss-
ed at a recent meeting of the. Huron
County social services council; a
group of professionals in the health
care system in Huron. He said
nothing came out of that meeting.
Warden Paul Steckle said it would
be premature for him to comment on
the idea of a district health council as
he only first heard about the
- esti nst w-jdea over the
weekend.
"There is_rto movement in our part
of Iluron (, n y," -he -did say.
