Letters to the Editor
Hydro restraint,: history,
inspire letter writers
Dear Editor: •
In. -a recent private
member's bill -MI -3P Patrick
Reid.accused Ontario Hydro
of "empire building" i Jack
Riddell's column. December
1i.
He cites staff size. salaries.
expenditures and debt as ex-
amples of how Hydro has
grown. -
Times have changed. Mr.
Reid. It's true Hydro grew. as
did many other industries.
when Ontario rode the tide of
prosperity. But today Hydro
reco4nizes its responsibility
to be in the vanguard of
restraint.
We have already taken a
number of steps to respond to
the current economic en-
vironment, such as:
- cancelling a planned salary
increase (or,. senior
executives:.
a voluntary
restraint program with other
rnanagerent and. profes-
sional staff
- freezing the staff comple-
ment at itspresent level for
the next two years. and mov-
ing to begin reducing absolute
numbers - of Hydro staff • in
future: •
- introducing more stringent
cost control measures related
to both operating and capital
costs:
reducing inventories and
cash on hand:
deferring trantformer and
transmission facilities:.
rescheduling the last ttto
units at Darlington
generating station to reduce
borrowing- by some $250
million . over -the. next .tw•o-
years. • .
. And there will be more
. restraint measures at Hydro .
taken • over the next few
months.
Rather than 'empire •
building. Hydro is continuing
to build an-. energy -secure
power system that's flexible
-enough to meet the challenges
of the future.. •-
Sincerely
Hugh •Macaulay
Dear Sir:
• i am sorry to inform the
people of Hensall that'it %yill
not be possible for me to write
the history of Hensa II. due to
many. circumstances. The.
cost is beyond reason: there
is not sufficient time and I
have ' • made other
• eammitmcnts.
i ant satisfied that I have
done my duty for the Village
in giving eleven years of my
time and talents to the better-
ment of Hensall. Now perhaps
another person will come for-
w'ard. one who will be. happy
to do the work. which is very
exhausting. and then l lens• ll
with have a book of its owl.
I shall return any materials
which so many kind people
have donated tome: perhaps
Brian Richman will display
some old. old pictures of ilen-
sall at a later date but i can-
not speak on his behalf. Again
thunk you for your support,
and 1 do- trust some person
