Decision delayed on intrest
Exeter council members
have delayed a decision on
the •mount. of interest that
will be charged next year to
delinquent taxpayers.
A bylaw had been prepared
tor this week's meeting, but
the matter was tabled until
January
• Council had the option of
setting the rate at either 14 or
15 percent or waiting until the
next meeting.
Last year the rate charged
was 18 percent. but interest
rates have dropped sharply
since then.
By law. council can set the
interest payment at one and
a half percent above prime on
the date of passage. The
prince rate on Monday was
1212 percent, meaning the in-
terest could be. set at 14
percent.
However, Clerk Liz Bell
said there was a 1979 bylaw in
place that would allow coun-
cil to charge 1 t 4 percent in-
terest per month, which
would make it 15 percent for
,the year.
