Great teams
The performance of two South Huron District High
School teams at recent all -Ontario secondary school
competitions was tremendous.
It was the first time local high school represen-
tatives had ever made the top five on a team level
against the best from other schools from any parts of
the province of Ontario.
The girls field hockey team lost a close game in the
semi-final rand and finished up as third best in the 16
team competition -
Congratulations are certainly in order to coach Jim
W ork nan and the girls for an excellent effort. They put
in a lot of time and hard work in practices and for a
number of years the team has won Huron -Perth cham-
pionships and this year the WOSSA title and the right
to go to the provincial'level.
This. sport is not very well known in this part of the
country. but, thanks to Jim Workman and his dedicated
team it will get much more support.
It seems that each year and this has to be dose to
Wertman's expertise add dedication the team's record
improves and we wouldn't be too surprised very many
years down the road to talking about the all -Ontario
field hockey champions from South Huron. At the same
time. the Ievel of capabilities of the South Huron cross
country is improving at about the same speed.
Here gin a lot of credit goes to the coach. Joe
Fulop has persevered over the years in generating his
runners to newer heights and records of excellence.
This year at the Ontario finals, the South Huron
senior girls crass country team finished in fifth spot
overall, another commendable record.
The same congratulations go out to the sinners and
their coaches Joe Fulop and Dave McClure.

• Year of the Argo bounce
There was considerable rause for celebration in
Toronto Saturday night after the. Toronto Argonauts
clinched first place in the Canadian Football League's
eastern division.
Bouncing back from only two wins in 16 games last
year, the Argos won nine times. lost six and tied one
during the just concluded 1962 season_

After the Argo win in Ottawa Saturday afternoon.
the CTY telecast dashed across the screen, Argos have
never wen Grey Cap alter finishing in first place.
That is not correct. The Toronto team won both the .
seasonal and playoff championships in the 1921 season
when Lionel Cooacher was in his heyday and again in
193'7 when Red Storey and Annis Stukus were at their
best.
Great one flying again
While Edmonton Oilers great scoring flash Wayne
Gretzky seemed to get off to a slow start in the scoring
race he is now in high gear and right up to his record
of a year ago. After Sunday's Edmonton win which
came in the club's 20th game of the season. Gretzky now
has 14 goals and 31 assists for a total of 45 points.
That's one point more than he was able to chalk up
in the first 3) games during the 1961-82 season when he
set league records in great style_
An interesting book
In the email this week we received a copy of a very
interesting sports boot It is based on the life of Howie
Morenz. who has been billed as hockey's first superstar.
The book is written by Mitchell native Dean Robin-
son who covered a number of playoff series between the
Exeter and Mitchell Hawks a few years back when he
was with the Stratford Beacon Herald.
The Howie Morenz story ranges from the day in
1902 when he was born in the family home on St. An-
dreR street'in Mitchell through an illustrious but short
professional hockey playing career to his untimely
death on .arch 6. 1937. . ti
Late in December. 1950 it was announced that
Howie Morenz had been chosen the greatest hockey
player in the first half century.
That proclamation came from the Canadian Press
on the strength of its nation-wide poll of sports editors
and sportscasters. The voting was not even close
-Moretrz who had been dead for more than 13 years gain-
ed 27 votes. Z3 more than runnerup Maurice -'The
Rocket.. Richard.
. The book tells about the oldtime rivalry between die
two Montreal teams. the Canadiens. and the Maroons
Milt Donnell of the Toronto Star once said. "Only the
dead the the dying are neutral."
In 11 seasons in the `HL. Morenz. known as the Mit-
chell Meteoror the Stratford Streak scored 29I goals and
picked up- 208 assists for a total of 499 points in 597
fames.
Individual honours were many for Morenz. He was
the league leader in goals. assists and points and Hart
trophy winner in 1128. leader in points. again the Hart
'sinner and centre on the first all-star team in 1931, won
the Hart trophy and again first all-star centre in 1932
and centre on the second ail -star team in 19m.
We have only read a portion of the book. but. would
highly recommend it as a Christmas present for hockey
fans. especially those 'who remember the good old days.
The book written by Dean Robinson is published in
Canada by the Boston Mills Press of Erin. Ontario and

dian Book Program
