The ExSter Hawks manag-
ed only ,one point in two
weekendigames with two of
the top t1¢ams in the northern
division :of the Junior "D"
loop, but came within two
minutes .of pulling a nyder
upset, Sunday.
The ,locals were bombed
10-1 by the defending OHA
champion Lucan Irish on Fri-
day, as the latter squad
dominated play throughout
the game.
Sunday night, the Tavistock
Brevet came to town for their
third time thisseason, and the
Hawks held a 4-2 lead until the
final minutes when the loop
leaders scored twice to go
home with a 4-4 draw.
The single point was enough
to push the Hawks into fourth
place in the northern division
with seven points, one more
than Mitchell and Seaforth
who share the cellar with six
after the Centennaires won on
Sunday.
Tavistock leads with 17
points, followed by Thedford
with 14 and Lucan with 13.
The Irish have three games in
hand over the Browns.
The Hawks have a busy
schedule this week with four
outings. On Wednesday they
travel to Belmont for a con-
test with the quickly improv-
ing Bombers. Then they host
Seaforth on Friday, travel to
Mt. Brydges for a game with
the southern division leaders
on Saturday and finish with a
Sunday afternoon game in

The home -and -home series
with the Centennaires will be
the moat important yet for the
Hawks as it appears those two
teams could be fighting for
the fourth and final playoff
spot for the rest of the season.

In Sunday's game against
the Braves, it appeared only

visitors blew the game open
as they dominated play

the Hawks, while Tavistock's
Larry Kropf was called on to
make only 29 saves, with ltl of
them coming in the final
period rally by the Hawks.
Trounced by Irish
The defending OHA cham-
pion Lucan Irish came to
town on Friday for their se-
cond time and for the second
time took home a win as they
dominated play in a 10-1
drubbing.

Midgets win first tilt of season
The Exeter juveniles con-
tinue to save their best hockey
for the third period, but it was
again too late as they dropped
a 5-3 decision to Oakridge at
the rec centre, Saturday.
The locals picked up one of
the five points awarded in the
contest as they out -scored the
visitors by a 2-1 margin in the
third.
Oakridge scored three
powerplay tallies to get their
margin of victory.
Steve Batten and Eric
Tadgell paced the Exeter
scoring with a goal and two
assists each. Defenceman
Brian Blackburn picked up
.the other tally and Scott
Jesney assisted on the two
tallies by his linematos.
Netminder Peter Dearing
was again the busiest man on
the ice and he showed his
skating abilities on several
occasions as he out -raced
Oakridge forwards for pucks
that otherwise would have
been breakaways.
Midgets win first
The Exeter midgets won
their first game of the season
when they beat Lucan 7-4 in'
the final game of Wednes-
day's triple -header at the rec
centre.
They had been beaten 6-3 by
Ilderton on Monday and drop-
ped an 11-6 verdict to Lucan
on Friday as the latter, squad
avenged the earlier loss.
Sean Whiteford and Steve
Gould had three each in the
win, while the single came off
the stick of Don Hamilton.
4:ike Tiedeman assisted on
tour of the goals, while Gould
and Scott Bogart helped out
on one.
Tiedeman scored twice
against Ilderton and George
Pratt had the single. Drawing
single assists were Doug
Scott, Tiedeman and Marty
Taylor.
Atoms win two
The Exeter Atoms picked
up victories in both starts in
Shamrock league play this
week.
Saturdays in Lucan Al
Bloomaert scored on a solo ef-
fort early in the third period
to break up a scoreless tie and
started the locals on their way
to a 3-1 win.
David O'Connor with an
unassisted goal and Todd
McCann on Assists from Tim
Van Dam and Brett Lammie
were the other Exeter
marksmen. Steve Nixon
scored for Lucan.
At home Sunday against
Parkhill Jamie Bedard,
Justin Charette, Rob
McLelland and O'Connor
scored in a 4-2 victory. Mike
Bax and Peter Conway
countered for Parkhill.
Assists for Exeter were
garnered by David Dalrym-
ple, Ai Blommaert, O'Connor
and McCann. Steve Sillery
provided solid goaltending in
both games for Exeter.
Pee Wees beaten twice
in Strathroy Saturday, the
Exeter pee wees were
defeated 7-3 and Sunday in
Lucan they were on the short
end of a 5-1 count.
The outcome of Saturday's
contest in Strathroy was
decided early as the home
team started off with six
unanswered goals.
The only Exeter scoring
came in the third period.
Steve Anderson started it off
on a three-way effort with Jon
O'Connor and Jeff
Dalrymple.
.Jeff Kinks converted a pass
from Larry Lewis and Shaun
.Forsythe counted on an
unassisted effort.
Terry Ouimet led the
Strathroy scoring with a hat
trick and Mark Ouimet add-
ed a pair of scores.
The only Exeter goal in the
Toss to Lucan came from the
stick of Jamie Oke on passes
from Jeff Kints and Tom
Rolph.

Split with Lucan
In Wednesday play at the
South Huron Rec Centre, the
Exeter and Lucan pee wees
and bantams broke even.
Lucan won the pee wee con-
. test by a 3-2 count and Exeter
rebounded to take the bantam
game by an identical score.
Sandy Hyde led the Lucan
pee wee scoring attack with a
two goal effort. Both came on
passes from Mike Annis. The
other goal for the winners was
notched by Tim Carter on a
three-way effort with Sandy
Hyde and Mike Annis.
Steve Anderson shot both
Exeter markers. The first
came on passes from Jeff
Rowe and Jon O'Connor and
the second on an unassisted
effort.
In the bantam game, Ex-
eter jumped in front with the
only two goals of the first two
periods as Terry Zachar
tallied on a solo dash and Ted
Lawson converted a pass
from Dave Russell.
The winning goal in the
third period came from the
stick of Jim Lewis with Terry
Zachar providing the pass.
Lucan goals were notched
by David Steeper on a pass
from Matthew Welsh and
Mike Dewan from Jeff
Gwalchmai. •
Novice lose
The Exeter novice team
dropped a 9-2 decision to
Lucan in a Friday contest in
Lucan.
Both Exeter goals were
chalked up by Jason.
Heywood. The first came on
an unassisted effort and the
second on a combination with
Ryan Lindenfield and Steve
Rankin.
Jeremy Jemec was the top
Lucan marksmen with a two
goal performance. The other
Irish scores were shot by
Jamie Lightfoot and Brad !
Coughlin. Getting assists'
were Scott Smith and Mike
Munro.

Tavistock issed on a
breakaway when the shooter
put the puck over them and
game until the third period as
they trailed 4-1 after two. But
the Irish set their scoring
sights on six tallies in the final
20 minutes, repeatedly tak-
ing advantage of some sloppy
defensive work by the locals,
several of whom didn't ap-
pear too interested in trying
to match strides with the
Irish.
Goalie Dave Rook made 31
saves in addition to the 10
shots which eluded him, while
Paul Creighton had only 25
shots aimed in his direction.
Ed Willis scored the lone
Exeter goal on an unassisted
effort to' open the second
period.
The Irish got two goals each
from John Medd, Paul
Wraith, Steve Glenn and
Geoff Edwards, while singles
were contributed by Art
Gregory and Dave Patton.
Wraith added four assists,
while picking up two each
were Jeff Skinner, Mark
Thomson; Glenn, Edwards
and Jamie Shipley.
The teams had 10 penalties
each and the Irish scored on
two powerplay attempts. •
