It could happen
Here comes the answer to our baseball trivia ques-
tion of a week ago.
Clow can a baseball team hit.three triples and three
singles in one inningiwithoutscoring a run?
The fust batter in the inning triples and promptly
picked off third or is out trying to steal home. The next
player does exactly the same thing and there are two
quick outs.
The third batter also triples. The next man up beats
out an infield hit while the runner remains at third. He
4 • then steals second and is followed by another infield hit
leaving the bases loaded.
The final batter hits a ground ball which hits the
runner at third base for the third out and the batter is
credited with a single.
Rowdy Argo fans
The great performance this year of the Toronto
Argonauts seems to be too much for their fans to take.
Especially in a recent win over Saskatchewan at CNE
Stadium, the home team supporters went a little wild
and some of their antics were more than disgusting.
Saskatchewan president has suggested the recent
unorderly conduct by Toronto fans may have been pro-
mpted by ‘)eer consumption at the park.
He went on to say, "In Regina we have the only
park in the league where beer isn't sold and we've said
we won't take a stand on whether it should be sold or
not. But, we will probably end up with a stand on the
issueifthere are more incidents like the one in Toronto."
More credibility
For a team that has been in the major league for
only six seasons, the Toronto Blue Jays are gaining a
lot of credibility.
A week+ago, Damasio Garcia was named to the
Associated Press as the. second baseman on their all
star team.
-Now pitcher Dave Stieb has been selected as the top
American league pitcher by the "Sporting News and
fourth choice for the Cy Young award in the junior
•circuit.
Stieb says his next goal is to win the ,Cy Young
award. He suggests the Blue Jays need an established
hitter and a reliable left handed starting pitcher to
become a contending club.
We really expect the. Jays will loosen up the rub-
ber band on their money supply and get in the free agent
bidding game for one or two top notch performers.
We just received the Blue Jays review for 1982 and
it is very interesting. Toronto pitchersshutout the op-
position on 13 aocasions, and most for any team in the
American league at the plate Blue Jays hit 45 triples,
the third best in the league.
They diopped considerably in the number of dou-
ble plays completed to 146. That may sound like a
negative fact, but, it isn't. For -the first time in their six
year existence, they allowed less opposing runners to
reach basethledecreasing the chance for twin killings.
By finishing 17 games behind the pennant winning
Milwaukee Brewers the Jays set an American league
record for the fewest games behind an American league
leader for a last place club. This record is actually
shared by the Cleveland Indians who were tied for last
with Toronto.
The previous mark was 19 games set by the Detroit
Tigers in 1974. The major league record is 11' and a half
games by the 1973 Philadelphia Phillies.
It's interesting to note that the Blue Jays drew bet-
ter crowds on the road than they did at home at Exhibi-
tion Stadium. On the road they attracted 1,392,194 fans
while 1,275,978 supporters showed up at home.
When talking about the Cy Young award, here is
another trivia question. Cy was only a nickname. What
were his full given names? Answers again next week..
Three strong NHL clubs .
- After some 15 games in the 1982-83 National Hockey
League season. three teams are standouts and of two
their performances were expected.
The defending Stanley Cup champion New York
Islanders and the Minnesota North Stars are starting
exactly where they left off last year.
The good getaway by the Montreal Canadiens may
be surprising to some. but. it shouldn't. After early
elimination in the playoffs for two straight years, the
Habs are off and flying and one of the reasons is the
resurgence of Gtfy Lafleur.
The Canadiens upped Lafleur's salary considerably
to half a million a year on the stipulation that he would
lose some.weight and he has done that.
Teamed up with Doug Wickenheiser and Ryan
Walter, Lafleur is approaching his superstar status of
a couple of years ago. Their line is one of the hottest
in the league right now and has hada lot to do with the
Montreal team being atop the Adams Division.
While the Islanders are well ahead in the Patrick
Division and the North Stars lead the Norris Division.
the real battle is shaping up in the Smythe Division with
all five teams within a couple of points of the top
As this is being written. the Los Angeles Kings lead
with 15 points and %bile the Winnipeg Jets and Edmon-
ton Oilers have 13 each and the Calgary Flames and
Vancouver Canucks are at the bottom with 12 points.
only three off the lead.
