Bow out in semi-final
SH football season
The 1982 season for the
South Huron District High
School teams ended on two
fronts Thursday as both were
eliminated in Huron -Perth
Conference semi-final
playoffs.
'the senior Panthers were
edged 2-1 by the Goderich
Vikings in a titanic defensive
struggle in Goderich while the
juniors were on the short end
of a 22-15 score in Listowel.
Both coaches praised their
clubs for good performances.
Senior coach Ron Bogart said
after the game, "Wait until
next year and Dave Cox, the
junior coach said, "overall we
played well and deserved to
win."
In the junior game Listowel
overcame an eight point first
half South Huron lead with 22
points in the second half
thanks mostly to the efforts of
their star backfielder Tom
Newbigging. ,•
Newbigging scored three
touchdowns and carried the
ball 80 percent of the time.
About the Listowel ace ball •
carrier, coach Cox said, "We
went into the game knowing
we had to stop him and we
- were able to keep him bottled
up in the first half. But in the
second half, we just couldn't
tackle him and he always
seemed to get six to eight
yards on every carry with
tacklers hanging all over
him."
South Huron started the
scoring in the second quarter
when John Hempel kicked a
35 yard single point. Dave
Rook followed with a 60 yard
run on a reverse for a
touchdown and Steve Gould
booted the extra point.
Listowel tied the score ear-
ly in the third quarter on
Newbigging's first touchdown
and a two point convert which
South Huron players argued
the Listowel oall carrier was
not over the line.
Bill Fisher chalked up the
second Panther touchdown
late in the third period on a
short run and his club was
ahead 14-8.
Early in the final period,
Tom Newbigging stoned his
second major and another
two point conversion was
good putting Listowel in front
16-14.
An apparent field goal by
Steve Gould was ruled only a
single point by the referee and
the Panthers were behind by
one point. Newbigging scored
his third touchdown to wrap
the game up for Listowel.
Bill Fisher had an outstan-
ding day for South Huron and
played his best game of the
season.
Seniors on defensive
In the senior game in
Goderich, neither club could
manage much of an offence
and the Vikings won the game
2-1 with two single points in
the last three minutes of play.
Early in the first quarter,
Chris Van Gerwen of the Pan-
thers kicked the ball into the
end zone, but, the Goderich
defender managed to get out
to the two yard line and avoid
a point.
The Vikings failed to gain
any ground and the Panthers
moved back to the 25 where a
field goal attempt was
blocked.
For the rest of the first half
it was just back and forth for
both teams and a scoreless
tie.
The Panthers took the wind
in the third quarter and
scored the first point of the
game on a 25 yard single by
Chris Van Gerwen.'
In the fourth quarter Brian
Blackburn thwarted a
Goderich touchdown by cat-
ching a Viking runner at the •
ends
25 yard line after had had
gained 50 yards.
On the third down, the Pan-
thers line broke through to
block a Viking field goal
attempt.
With three minutes left,
Goderich tied the score with
a 35 yard kick for a single
point.
On the next series the Pan-
thers were forced to kick
again and the Vikings .were
able to move to the South
Huron 45..
With the minute flag up, the
Vikings kicked a single. Coach
Bogart said, "We had hoped
to kick the ball back out, but,
it was fumbled out of the end
zone."
In the final series, Goderich
intercepted a long South
Huron pass and the game and
season was over. •
Jamie Chaffe and Dave
Hayter were the landing
ground gainers for the Pan-
thers while Scott Turnbull led
all defenders with 18 key
tackles.
Coach Bogart concluded, "I
have great praise for the
defence. They played well
and only allowed one pass
completion and stopped
Goderich on four occasions on
a -third and one situation."

Senior girls capture WOSSA cross country
South Huron's senior girls
cross country team captured
the WOSSA championship
Friday at the Wildwobd Con-
servation Area. The team
narrowly beat second place
Sarnia Northern.. This win
qualifies Exeter to run 6 girls
in the OFSSA meet in Toron-
to this weekend.
Catherine Patterson,
despite a foot injury again led
the senior girls with her sixth
place finish. Catherine, who
competed in WOSSA field
hockey the same day, ran the
five and a half kilometre race
in 21 minutes and 25 seconds.
In one of her best races of the
season Colleen Regier who is,
supposed to be a junior,
finished ninth. -
Mary Lou Rundle was
plagued with a cold but was
still able to finish in fifteenth
place. Despite a bad start
Sheila Regier, a midget, was
the fourth South Huron run-
ner to count in nineteenth
position. Exeter ran eight
other senior girls who all
finished well in the 96 runner
field.
Coach Joe Fulop said he ex-
pected his girls to win and
was very pleased with, them.
This is the first, South Huron
team in OFSSA since three
years ago when a midget girls
team, with some of this year's
runners, won WOSSA to
qualify for the all -Ontario
meet in Kingston.
In a race of over 150 run-
ners, South Huron midget
boys placed sixth as a team.
Their placing may have been
higher if Brian Topp had run.
Ed Thuss ran the 5500 metre
race in nineteen minutes to
give him ninth place:
As only the top three in-
dividual runners as well as
top two teams go to OFSSA.
I'huss did not qualify, but has
a good future for the next four
years of his high school
career.
Ted Lawson was the second
runner in with twenty-fourth
place. The last two counting
positions were held by Ray-
mond Lewis and Donald
Wareing in 46 and 54, respec-
tively. F'our other South
Huron midgets helped in the
team effort.
The senior boys cross-
country team placed seventh
in a race that saw their
Huron -Perth rivals, Stratford
Central, win the WOSSA
crown. The team was only 20
points from fourth place.
Despite a foot injury at
Huron -Perth, Mike Van Raay
finished twenty-seventh
followed closely by John
VanEsbroeck in twenty-ninth.
To add to South Huron's
points Jim Regier and Dan
Reid were respectively thirty-
fifth and forty-second. Mike
Tadgell also ran well as did
the five other senior boys.
Irish winning streak b
The winning streak of the
Lucan Irish in OHA Junior
"D" league play came to an
abrupt halt Tuesday and now
has turned into a losing spell.
The Irish undefeated in
their first four games were
edged 4-3 in Mount Budges,
lost 9-1 to the Belmont
Bombers on Lucan ice. Fri-
day and were dropped by the
Tavistock Braves by 12-7
'The Ir►hh will be at home fo
the Mitchell Hawks tonight,
Wednesday. All ladies and
senior citizens will be admit-
ted free of charge. The club
will be sponsoring a Casino
Night, Friday.
In Mount Brydges, the Irish
found themselves three
goals down with less than
five minutes to go in the third
period. They rallied for two
quick goals, but, could not get
the equalizer.
• Steve Glenn started the
Lucan scoring at 6:30 of the
second period on a three-way
combination with captain
Paul Wraith and John Medd.
Mount Brydges tied the
score later in the middle
frame and counted three
straight goals early in the
third period.
Dave Paton converted a
pass from Hugh Dietrich for
the first Irish goal in the third
session and Jeff Skinner
finished off the scoring on
passes from Geoff Edwards
and Paul Wraith.
In Lucan, Wednesday night,
Daryl Perfect scored a pair of
goals to lead the Belmont win
while Brad Hannah and Dan
Chavin added singles.
Art Gregory notched the on-
ly Lucan goal in the last
'minute of the first period.
This was the last cross•
country race for some of
these boys who will be
graduatingthis year.
The cross-country season is
over for the boys but all of the
girls will run at OFSSA this
Saturday. Only six runners
may finish but all of the team
can race. The meet is in north
Toronto with a course over ski
hills,` hush and fields.
Fulop feels the team should
place in the top 10 at the all -
Ontario meet. He thinks this
year's team is better than the
roken
Steve Glenn and Mark
Thompson assisted.
•
In Friday's 12-7 loss to
Tavistock, Jeff Skinner led
the Irish scoring attack with
a three goal performance.
Mark Thomson was next on
the Lucan scoring parade
with a two.goal effort while
Steve Thomson and Jamie
Shipley' each scored in single
fashion:
Taking care of half of • the
Tavistock goals with a six
goal night was Kevin
Albrecht.
South Huron one that placed
seventh in OFSSA, the best
ever finish for the local
school.
