To come to Canada, the
Dutch have to come (hop)
over the dykes (dikes) that
protect Holland from the
North sea; hence, the name
"Dykehoppers".
Shortly after the formation
of the club, some members
who played amusical instru-
ment came together to form
small bands to enliven the
celebrations by marching
Prince Carnival and his coun-
cil of 11 Jesters into the dance
hall; by filling in when the
professional band hired has
an intermission: and by ac-
companying special floor
shows performed by other
members of the.club.
Gradually, more musicians
joined the band to bring" the
present strength to 10 players,
,who are enthusiastically sup-
ported by Wooden Shoe
Dancers. The music is ar-
ranged especially for the
band, mak ll ig it an" unique
organization among the
ethnic clubs in Canada.
The purpose of The
Dykehoppers is to make fun
and to help other service
clubs with their celebrations
as well as adding a light touch
to charitatlle. fund raising or
occasions.
The music is a cross cut of
the band's . repertoire --
opening with The Dykehop-
pers marching into the dance
hall and finishing with the
Dykehoppers Polonaise
(Dutch Grand March) which
gets even the non -dancing au-
dience onto the dance floor.
The Dykehoppers are not
all Dutch descent but are
Canadian and many other na-
tionalities and are from all
walks of life.
The big band sound of The
Ambassadors will also be
featured for dancing at the
Exeter event.

Church news
At the Granton United
Church the Rev. Bruce Pierce
was in charge of the worship
and entitled his sermon
"Praying as Jesus Prayed".
Prayer is not a tool that was
given to us, to ask God to take
away things that are had,,and
it is not the answer to turn un-
to God when we want
something. If you are going to
pray, said the minister, it is
important that you believe
and have faith in the one that
you are praying to. C.G.I.T.
member Josie Anderson read.

by Betty Ann Herbert and
Mrs. Percy Hodgins. The
Rev. Braley preached his ser-
mon from a favorite hymn
"Faith of our Fathers".
To have faith is to be sure
of the things we hope for, and
to be certain of the things we
cannot see, it was by Faith
that the man of ancient times
won God's approval, said the
speaker.
