Church
is saved
St. Patrick's Roman
Catholic Church, near Lucan
will not be demolished.
Diocese of London Bishop
John Sherlock ruled during
the weekend that the 123 year
old church would be
renovated instead of replaced
by a new structure.
A month ago. the parish ad
visory board by a controver-
sial nine to eight vote recom-
mended the church be
demolished and rebuilt.
In a letter read at masses
Sunday, Bishop Sherlock said,
"My principal concern was
and remains, Unity of the
parish family. 1 beg all of you
to unite."
The Bishop said his decision
in favour of renovations was
consistent with the advice of
the diocesan building com-
mission and took into account
assurances of financial aid
from Wintario and the On-
tario Heritage Foundation.
It seemed to recognize the
far reaching interest in the
historic church which has
been •a landmark at the in-
tersection of Highway 4.and
Roman Line between Elgin -
field and Lucan.
Sherlock continued,"I
recognize this situation is one
of those rare instances when
the general public beyond the
limits of our parish and
diocesan family has :a
legitimate interest in our
decision."
After Sunday's services, St.
Patrick's parish priest Father
Joseph Finn said he was deep-
ly relieved that a decision had
been made and reaction was
generally favourable.
Father Finn went on to say,
"I feel very good. I look for
co-operation and support as
we move to provide a more
fitting house of worship. We
will try to bring this historic
house of worship into the 20th
century through appropriate
renovations.
Lucan Knights of Columbus
representative Bill Giesen
said he thought $320,000 was
a lot of money to spend on
renovating an old building,
but, would go along with the
renovation project.
Current plans which pro-
bably will be modified and
amended call for total
renovation of the exterior and
interior of the church in-
cluding removal of balconies
which run along both sides of
the interior of the church, ex-
tension and tiering of the rear
balcony and adding of a new
front foyer, washrooms and
staircases to the choir loft.
The oak pews would be
refinished, the wooden floor
torn out and a. new concrete
floor installed.' The bell tower,
walls and roof would be rein-
forced
einforced and two new gas fur-
naces would provide heat for
the building.
Cost of building a new con-
temporary style church was
estimated at $339,000.
Father Finn said renova-
tions will be financed by
church savings and a
systematic fund raising cam-
paign which parish officials
hope will raise about $170,000.

To Ratepayers o
Exeter and
Usborne Township
As your trustee I would like to take
this opportunity to update you' on the
educational system in Huron County.
The Board has twenty-four elemen-
tary schools with more than sixty-two
hundred students. There are five secon-
dary schools, thirty-nine hundred
students. There are also three schools
for the trainable mentally retarded
students. The board is also responsible
for more than one hundred and forty
bus routes. This all adds up to more
than seven hundred employees.
The budget for 1982 was over thirty
two million dollars. The provincial
government through grants provided
approximately sixty-five percent. The
local taxpayers through taxes were
responsible for thirty-two percent. The
other three percent came from other
sources, mostly tuition from other
boards.
The board operates under a three
committee system
1. Education
2. Management
3. Personnel
At present I serve as vice-chairman
of the personnel committee.
In the next three yecw term l see twe-••
areas of concern to the board. They
are:
1. Bill 82 and special education
2. Government funding restraints
1. Huron County has developed an ex-
cellent special education plan and it has
been approved by the Ministry of
Education.
One of its strong points is the in-
volvement of parents in all phases of
testing and placing of students in.
special classes.
2. Restraint Program:
When Government funding
decreases it puts pressure on Boards to
cut courses and staff. I have every con-
nfidence that this board, with the
assistance of the administrative staff
and teachers, will be able to offer a
good sound educational system to the
students of Huron County.
It has been a pleasure and a privilege
to be your trustee in the past years and
I ask for your support one more time
on November 8. -
Thank you
Clarence (King) McDonald
