Sparkling in the autumn sun. it is plump. red and perfectly formed. fill- ed with the promise of a tas- ty treat • like an apple picked fresh from the tree. but a fan enjoys it whether it's bought from the orchard or the supermarket. Macintosh. Delicious, Spy. Ida Red. Wine Sap and more Odds 'n ends By Elaine Townshend But. how' do we reach it -• this temptation' that we know in the Bible was called the for- bidden fruit. To shake the tree and cause the prize to fall to the ground means risking a bruise that would destroy its perfection We might choose instead to risk a few bruises of our own • in a precarious climb. The ladder must be placed just -right not to damage the limbs that have brought forth the fruit. Safely back on the ground.. there is no hasty bite. The mo- ment must be sa%oured. The prize is polished on a shirttail ,until it shines all round. Then. crunch it. Juice squirts in every direction. Munch it Tart or sweet the. taste is delicious. Swallow- a long. 'cool. tasty swallow. Of course. there's nothing provide a flavour to please 'every preference. While the apple makes a quick snack that tastes -good and is good for us. too. its ver- satility doesn't end there. A good -cook is never stumped as long as apples are around. Who could ever resist. "Mom's Apple Pie"? Who hasn't licked their lips al the thought of baked apples, ap- ple rolls. apple fritters. apple upside down cake or pudding or apple sauce? • Apple butter and apple cider are standard apple treats. Apples can be mixed with other foods for variety. For example. there's cranberry apple ring and ap- ple nut torte. Craftsmen nave discovered you don't have to eat apples to enjoy them. Apple dolls are interesting to make and fascinating to see. An apple a day may not keep the doctor away as the old rhyme suggests. but it tastes good anyway As you have probably guessed, the apple is my favourite fruit. By sheer coin-. cidence. as 1 sat down to write this column. a report came over the radio about a study done on fruit. The survey claimed that a person's favourite fruit can give clues to his or her personality and aptitude. For example. people who like oranges make good ar- chitects and engineers and most have long happy mar- riages. The people. who con- ducted the study. Couldn't ex- plain the results: they could only report them. People, who eat grapes, are usually reliable And. people. who like apples. make good' astronauts. If you hear I'm on a trip. you'll know where' I'm headed. Resort pair mark events Arthur Baker of Grand Bend will celebrate his 98th birthday on October 27.
