Field hockey undefeated The South Huron girls field hockey team completedtheir regular season undefeated. Today they play Stratford Northwestern in the Huron - Perth final at Exeter. . Both teams advance to WOSSA Friday and Saturday. WOSSA games will also be played at the high school. Exeter's team -hosted a dou- ble header Wednesday as both St. Marys and Listowel participated in the mini -tournament. In the close game against St. Marys, there wasno score until the last minute when Cheryl Cann put one in for Ex- eter followed by another by Patti Willis. St. Marys had defeated South Huron in overtime of last year's Huron -Perth final. South Huron coach Jim Workman felt his team "deserved to win". South Huron easily dispos- ed of Listowel 5-0. Pauline Brand scored two goals despite suffering an injured finger. Ruth Ryan, Cheryl Cann and Patti Willis each added one. Workman noted that goalie Leanne Dillon hadn't been scored on all season and that his team has a' good offensive attack, having scored a total of 18 goals, which is very im- pressive in field hockey. To provide the team with tougher competition they travelled to Toronto over the weekend to play on the Sun- nybrook fields with 92 teams competed. South Huron was in the top section, which they won. Pauline DeVries scored her first goal against Bell from Ottawa: Pauline Brand also added two to make it 3-0. The sole goal of the game against Bayview was put in by Brand. In South Huron's only tie of the season both Ex- eter andHillfield Strathallan, a private girls school from Hamilton, were unable to score. In her first goal of her field hockey career, Lee O'Rourke scored against Peterborough Collegiate to win 1-0. Such high level quality will be valuable to the 'team in the probable participation in OFSSA at the beginning of November. L1t7(I(J(' T't �CtIRYtiLERI Juveniles beat Lucan in rough tilt The Exeter juveniles started the season off on the right foot in the standings, but showed signs that they may not have enough penalty - killing strength to finish the season if they continue their penalty parade. The locals scored a 5 -3 -win over Lucan in their first Shamrock tilt at the rec cen- tre, Saturday, and they ac- complished the win while playing most of the game shorthanded. They broke a tie with two goals in the third period, both caning while they were short-handed, hav- ing played most of the final stanza with two men in the penalty box. Exeter picked up four of the five points awarded in the game. Juvenile squads play for a total of five points, one for the winner of each period and two for the full game win. The locals won the first period by a 2-1 count, lost the second by the same margin and then took the third period and the final game score. Scott Batten, Eric Tadgell, Chris Van Gerwen, Dave Rowcliffe and Scott Jesney scored for the locals with assists to Van Gerwen, Jesney, Steve Batten, Rowcliffe and George Tomes. Goalie Peter Dearing turn- ' ed in a dazzling display as he kept the locals in the game, along with some strong penal- ty killing work by his mates. T -A photo Local runners dominate in school's cross country A total of 17 schools provid- ed tough competition at South Huron's annual cross-country meet which was held Wednes- day. It was a good preview of today's Huron -Perth meet despite the absence of Strat- ford Central's strong team. South Huron runners demonstrated dominance in the girls races winning two team championship plug two individual races. Showing great energy Catherine Patterson left a field hockey game to jump to the starting line and win the senior girls race. Mary Lou Rundle followed in third place. With the absence of Esther Van Oss, former runner - now, basket- ball player, Alice bietrich was recruited to round out the team in eleventh position while Sarah McClure placed twelfth. In a close midget girls finish Irene Dietrich started her kick too soon and was edg- ed out of leading position by teammate Sheila Regier. Bantams spUt The Exeter and Lucan ban- tams split a pair of exhibition games this week, each winn- ing on the other squad's ice. Exeter won 4-3 in Lucan and the latter took a 3-0 win in Exeter. Bryan Quinn, Ron Loucks, Tim Moore and Sean Whiteford scored in the Ex- eter win, while replying for Lucan were D. Hugill, B. O'Neil and J. McLellan. Ian Craig, Mike Dewan and Dave Steeper scored for Lucan in the shutout win. Exeter Atoms dropped • their first game in Shamrock league play 4-2 at the hands of Goderich, Sunday. The locals had trouble get-. ting untracked and fell behind 3-0 on goals by Tim Harrison, Brian Lane and Andrew Cauchie. Shannon Hrudka got Exeter on the scoreboard early in the third period on a pass from Robbie McLelland. Harrison scored his second 'goal of the game beating Steve Sillery on a shot from close -in before David O'Con- nor closed out the scoring for Exeter by finishing off a nif- ty passing play with David Dalrymple and Craig Soldan. Sillery and Harlen Tinney shared the goaltending for Exeter with both goalies mak- ing several fine saves to keep the score close.
