at Tanis Chuter's bridal

her sisters (Pat Taylor and
Shirley Taylor) presented an
enjoyable program of vocal
and instrumental music, lip -
singing their way with a
great deal of skill and action.
Peggy Reid was the an-
nouncer, dressed in a "mink"
coat. Also on the program
was a song with guitar ac-
companiment by Shirley
Taylor and piano solos by
Jacqui Taylor.
Bonnie Dowson read a

Eleven members of Varna
U.C.W. attended the Regional
meeting in Londesboro
Church on Tuesday, October
5 when the twentieth anniver-
sary of the organization was
celebrated with the theme
"Past, Present and Future".
Theme speaker was Mrs. G.
W. Tiffin of Wingham. Near-
ly all of the 1962 local
presidents were present, and
Mrs. Elsie McKingley of
Goshen, Regional President
At Inauguration, had the
honour of cutting the anniver-
sary cake.
An interesting program on
the history of women's
organizations in the church in
Canada was given by Joyce
Dowson at the October
meeting of Varna U.C.W.
There are records of
meetings going back to 1871.
From the earliest days,
clothing and food was provid-
ed for theneedy, and support
was given to overseas mis-
sions for evangelical, medical
and educational work, par-
ticularly with girls. One group
in an eastern city even paid
for street lights and a
lamplighter. Some interesting
methods of money raising
were recorded. For instance,
the eggs laid on Sundays were
sold for the church for 8 cents
a dozen.
The Inaugural meeting in
1962 was held in the church
with Rev. Pitt presiding.
Ruby Hill was installed as the
first president, and there
were 46 names on the roll. The`.
first life membership in the
U.C.W. was presentedtoMrs.
John McAsh in 1963 and the
baptismal bowl was purchas-
ed with the money.
Joyce listed all of the
presidents; and the many pro-
jects carried out over the
years, including the purchase
of stacking chairs, water
heater, sink cupboard,
carpets and many others.
They saved Campbell soup
labels to buy one of the coffee
makers. Meal prices have in-
creased from ;1.75 to ;5.75.
.during the 20 years. In-
teresting program events
were remembered, too.

ay ALICE DICKENS
Often much publicity is
given to someone who wins a
race orbeauty contest but
sometimes good deeds are
overlooked or forgotten.
This past summer ten year
old Scot Molnar, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Molnar, 787
Dundalk Drive, London,
rescued a seven year old
playmate from drowning in a
30 ft. water filled hole. The
hole had been left unguarded
after excavation work had
been done there.
Scot knew he could . not
leave his little friend to go for
help and that he must do
something at once to save
him. Tying clothing and a
rope to a long pole, he rescued
his chum. •
Scot's mother, the former
Sheila Armstrong of Maple
Lodge Stock Farm, a one time
student at Parkhill High
School, a member of Carlisle
Church, and on the Nursing
staff of Exeter Hospital, is
well-known in this area.
The residents of Maple
Lodge community were
delighted on hearing of Scot's
heroic deed.
At this Thanksgiving
season he has given us one.
more thing for which to be
thankful, and no doubt many
friends and relatives of the
rescued boy will be thankful
and long remember the •
thoughtfulness of Scot
Molnar.

Bridal' showers were an-
nounced for Bonnie Dowson
on October 20 and Barbara
Aldwinkle on November 3.
Carol Simons will speak on
the work she does for the
Board of Education at the
November meeting. This pro-
mises to be another in-
teresting topic, and hopefully
will attract a much better at-
tendance. Those who were at
the October meeting really
enjoyed the reminiscing.
Miss Brown has recovered
from the flu tliat kept her in
last week and conducted
Thanksgiving worship on Sun-
day. Ivan and Margaret
McClymont again decorated
the sanctuary beautifully with
autumn leaves and the fruits
of the harvest. The maple
leaves they used were par=
ticularly beautiful this year.
Next Sunday, Goshen
church will celebrate their an-
niversary. Guest preacher is
Rev. Alex Taylor. There will
be activities in the Sunday
School room for small
children. No Sunday School or
Church in Varna.

Exeter 'area. The presenta-

her keen wit.. She is 91 years
