Mrs. Cortml Sw.nsyjF Menet 2444702 UCW Thanksgiving The October meeting of the Zurich U.C.W. was held on Thursday evening Oct. 7th in the church basement Group7 comprised of Eileen Consitt, Connie Lewis and Isabel Gascho was in charge of the Devotional part of the meeting. Phillippa Steckle played a piano prelude prior to the meeting. Isabel! welcomed members and guests. Connie Lewis spoke on Thanksgiving of our past and future fdr a fuller life. Fay Skinner, sang two love- ly solos, which were well received. Douglas Gill ac- companied Fay on the piano. Ilene Conitt read the scrip- ture, followed by prayer. Connie Lewis introduced our speaker Paul Turnbull. He is a staff member of Arc Industries of Dashwood. All enjoyed his talk on the wonderful work they are do- ing. Paul showed most in- teresting slides. They have 75 enrolledand up to 90 with nursery children. Ilene Consitt thanked Paul. and said how sorry all were to hear of their great loss in a fire in their storage building. Isobel read the scripture followed by a poem. A Farmer's Thanksgiving Prayer. We all wish her a speedy recovery. Tweedsmuir history WI meeting topic The October Women's In- stitute meeting was held in the Township Hall. The topic was Tweedsmuir History. Ruby Neeb had a very in- teresting display of scrap books documents, historical meetings, events, etc. She' reported on several meetings she had attended. - In Embro they had a workshop for W.I. curators and an historical meeting in Crediton where they gave the - history of the flax industry in this vicinity. (It takes 65,000 to 120,000 seeds to make 1 lb. of flax.) Ruby also attended a genealogy meet! ng in Goderich which sounded very in- teresting. Joan Smith read the history of the Merner family written by her son Gerry. During the business a short period of silence was observ- ed in memory of a life member Myrtle Hay. An in- vitation to Crediton, Nov. 17 Was accepted. Eleven members had attended a ral- ly in Grand Bend that day and some comments were given about it. While Ron and Sandra Dickert and family took up residence in the former home of Mrs. Rose on Main Street. The family of, Mrs. Veronica (Von) Etue of Seaforth got together at her cottage north of St. Joseph to celebrate Thanksgiving. Mr. and- Mrs. Albert Clausius celebrated Thanksgiving with a family dinner on Monday at their home with over 20 relatives attending. Jim and Marg Kendall of St George, Ontario spent the holiday weekend with her brother and family, Ed and Dorothy Smith and family. Dave and Ruth Siebert ac- companied her dad, Harold and Erma Soper to Florida where the latter will be spen- ding the winter and after 11 days Dave and Ruth returned home by plane. They found the weather hot and wet! A few couples from town enjoyed going to Nashville for the Thanksgiving weekend on a bus trip. Mrs. Theresa Hartman and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Farwell, Zurich and all of Mrs. Hart - man's family from various places attended the 25th wed- ding anniversary celebration of her son and daughter-in- law, Richard and Cecile Hart- man in Windsor on Sunday with a special Mass offered in their home by a nephew, Fr. Larry Ducharme of Detroit. While the family was together that weekend, a pre - Christmas dinner was en- joyed by all. Leo and Cecile Meidinger and all their family were din- ner guests at the home of Doug and Audrey Meidinger in London on Sunday. Cousins of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kenda Sr. from Ohio spent the weekend with them. Ruth Zielman. - Cof C announces $1,OOQ -draw and Christmas .lighting Contest Mike O'Connor, second vice president of the Zurich Chamber of Commerce, in- formed the well -attended Oc- tober meeting the Chamber will again this year arrange a draw for a, one thousand dollar bill. The draw will take place December 11, in con- junction with the Chamber's Ladies Night festivities. The 'Chamber plans another Christmas lighting contest this year, with a $300 prize for the most beautifully decorated property. An agreement has been reached with the Zurich Lions Club and the Bean Festival committee to share the cost of renovating the signs at the eastern and western ap- proaches to the village. Members and businessmen from the Bluewater area heard two guest speakers. Stanley township reeve Paul Steckle, a board member of the Huron County Town and Country Homemakers, had been asked to come and outline the organization's history and mode of operation. - He explained the Town and Country Homemakers hopes to raise $70,000 during its Oc- tober fund-raising drive. Steckle said the Huron organization is a model which others are copying. After five years planning, Woodstock does not yet have a similar vehicle operation, and has asked this association for help. • - . The weather certainly smiled on us for the holiday weekend. Our movie program for the winter months commenced on Monday evening, followed by refreshments. On Tuesday evening, the Ladies Auxiliary held their monthly meeting, opening with a program and refreshments for the residents. Music was supplied by John Farwell, Mark Hart- man and Ken Overholt who played guitars and sang, Mrs. Cecile Farwell gave a reading. Messrs. Bob Dinney, Gerald Gaiser and Mrs. Clarke, an 85 year old lady from the Parkhill area, delighted the audience with stand for re-election at the Oc- tober meeting of Stanley township council. Council endorsed the Zurich resolution asking the Huron County Board to keep its budget within the federal guidelines. Salaries for the coming term were set. The children and grand- children of Bert and Clara Klopp, from Waterloo, Lon- don and Zurich enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving sup- per at their home on Sunday. Mac and Jean Klopp, Zurich and son Ron and wife Gloria and son Aaron of Keswick spent from Saturday to Monday travelling through the States and enjoyed seeing lots of sights and all the love- ly fall colors and spending Sunday in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Fishing was good at the dock in Bayfield last week when a group from town, Ron Parish, Leo Meidinger and son Ed, Lloyd Denomme and son Rick and Andrew Ray caught several Salmon rang- ing from 8 to 22 pounds.. Mr. and Mrs. George Harvey from Redford, Michigan are spending a cou- ple of weeks at their cottage on the Bluewater. Mrs. Mozart (Marie) Gelinas returned home on Sunday after a four day train trip from Mission, B.C. where she had spent three weeks with daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Dave Beer, Kristin and new baby, little Aaron . Matthew horn on September 18. Marie also at- tended his baptismal last Sun- day and visited with another daughter, Michelle Gelinas who lives in Vancouver. (Aaron is also a grandson for Mrs. Lyillan Beer of Hensell. ) A delicious smorgasbord supper was enjoyed by 100 people on Saturday at the Dominion Tavern as the Zurich Rec League (baseball teams) held their end of the season get-together (along with their better halves). Visitors from Ohio spent the weekend with cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kenda, Sr. A reminder that everyone is invited to come out and play Bingo this Saturday October 16 at the arena to help raise money for Bro. Bob Mit- tleholtz in India, being spon- sored by St. Boniface Parish, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The jackpot priZe for this year will be $100! Twenty-four seniors en -1 joyed a one day bus trip to Halton Hills (north of Toron- to) last Thursday, and even though it was a rainy day, they took in a lot of interesting sights and places. Dinner guests at our home last Wednesday were my mother Mrs. Jean Bedard and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dugay, all of Windsor. Thanksgiving dinner was held at the home of Mt. and Mrs. Albert Clausius on Mon- day for all their family. A nice family get-together was held on Sunday at the t honor of his parents; Bill and Anna Marie Watson of Zurich who celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. All four sons, George, John, Jerome, and Fred, and families were present for the occasion along with relatives Mrs. Cel McGuiellen, London, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Isenberg from Detroit, (who are also spending a few days with Bill and Anna Marie.) and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Farwell also called in for the evening. A delicious smorgasboard meal was enjoyed by all, in- cluding Fr. Mooney.
