The Zurich Buckeyes finish-
ed their 1982 tournament
schedule by winning the B
division of the Clinton
Fastball tournament.
The Buckeyes' first game
was against Goderich Lake
PortA div. and the local team
came out on the short end of
a 10-2.
In game two against the
Seaforth Creamery, the
Buckeyes got their act
together in a'well played 5-2
victory. Kim McKinnon pitch-
ed a strong game going the
distance for the victory. Pat
Bedard lead the team in hit-
ting, as he collected a single,
double and triple. Picking up
one hit apiece were Cliff
Gingerich, Mike Clarke, Ken
Clarke, and Barry Overholt.
Pat Bedard was selected as
the game's M.V.P.
The victory over Seaforth
put the Buckeyes in the 13
final against the Clinton
Bluebirds. What started out
as a pitching dual for three in-
nings, came to a quick ending
as the Buckeyes scored one in
the fourth, three in the fifth
and eight more in the sixth as
they beat the Bluebirds 12-2.

four tournaments in 1982 and
finished with a record of six
wins and five losses.

Varna students win awards

Ivan and Irene Smith of
Toronto, who always spend at
least a day at the Interna-
tional Plowing Match, visited
with the Chessells for a cou-
ple of days and accompanied
us to the big show. The Smiths
are among the fine people
we've met while camping.
Tom McBride received the
Epps Pump Award for
Mechanical Technology in
grade 11. Terry Brandon won
the Dr. Palmer Award for
grade 12 Geography, and San-
dra Coleman the E. B. Men-
zies History Award and a W.
D. Fair Scholarship for
General Proficiency in grade
12. Laura Hill, formerly of
Varna, received the Bank of
Montreal Secretarial Award
and Larry Taman received a
Scholars' Award.
Lawrence Keys and
Michael Coleman received
their Honours Diploma.
Graduation Diplomas (grade
12) went to Terry Brandon,
Sandra Coleman, Laura Hill,
Jim Postma, Larry Taman
and Cathy Taylor.
Many area people spent a
day at the Plowing Match
before their land was dry
enough to start on the corn
and beans'

Michael Coleman, son of
Jack and Eleanor Coleman
and grandson of Mr. Leonard
Prang of Zurich and.Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Baker of
Bayfield, gave the valedic-
tory address at the Com-
mencement Exercises at Cen-
tral Huron Secondary School
in Clinton on October 1. The
Carter Scholarship was
awarded to Michael for
achieving one of the highest
Grade 13 averages in Huron
County. Other awards he
received were the Sir Ernest
Cooper Estate Scholarship
and a W.D. Fair Scholarship
for general, proficiency, the.
E.A. Fines Award for
Mathematics and W.D. Fair
Scholarships for two
Mathematics, Chemistry
and Physics, and an Ontario
Scholarship. Michael is now
enrolled in the engineering
program at the University of
Waterloo.
On Sunday Curtis and Mary
Gingerich celebrated their
40th wedding anniversary at
their home with open house.
Their immediate family (21)
enjoyed dinner in Exeter. In
the afternoon several friends,
relatives, brothers and sisters
and members of their church
(around 15 in all) called in
through out the day to con-
gratulate them. It was a
perfect day weather wise,too
allowing them to take family
pictures and sit outside.
Our sincere sympathy to
the family and relatives of the
late Gary Overholt who pass-
ed away on Saturday morning
leaving his wife Helen and
two children.
Men's slo-pitch baseball
banquet and dance was Fri-
day night in Bayfield. It was
enjoyed by teams from
Zurich and area, accom-
panied by their wives.
The Cubs have begun their
weekly meetings again for the
winter months at -the Zurich
public school on Wednesday
evening. The group are sell-
ing 1983 Scout calendars to
raise some money. There is
still some room for more boys
to join.
Congratulations to Rick and
Debbie Fisher on the arrival
of their first baby a girl, Jan
Marie.
Many people from town
took in some of the plowing
match near Lucan last week
and found the tented city quite
a big place and very
interesting.
Canvassers for the Cana-
dian Bible Society will be out
from October 4th to the 23rd
going from door to door.

Neil and Gladys Gingerich
returned home by plane a
week ago Sunday after a two
week vacation to.Ediinonton,
Alberta where they visited
with daughter and son-in-law
Mary -Ellen and Neil Skinner
and 'did some sight seeing at
Jasper, the Columbia ice
fields, and spent some time in
the mountains.

recovery are extended to

ding of a granddaughter and
