Top calf sells
9.06 a pound
A calf shewn by Allan Ren-
ning was named the grand
champion at Saturday's Ex-
eter Fair feeder calf club
competition.
The champion calf was pur-
chased by the Woodham Meat
Market for $1.06 cents per
pound. The reserve champion
shown by Catherine Johns
went to the Exeter District
Co-operative for $1.03 a
pound.
In the showmanship classes
the winners were seniors
Bevan Shapton and Catherine
Johns and Dan Gower and
Denise Benning in the junior
category.
Gaining the most points in
the five different breeds of
sheep were Gerald Dearing,
Donald Dearing, both of the
Exeter area; Louis Emke,
Elmwood; and Edward
Jackson, Harriston.
In the poultry division, Clif-
ford Pepper, Dashwood had
the best standard and George
Tieman, also of Dashwood
had the most winners with his
best solid coloured bantam
and parti-coloured bantam.
The prize for the best
waterfowl went to Dorothy
Knudsen, Petrolia and Ron
Parsons, RR 3, Exeter
entered the best pigeon and
the best doe in the goats
category was exhibited by
Tom Jorgenson, Seaforth.
Results were announced in
the fair's field crop competi-
tions. The winners were:
Grain corn - Edwin Miller
Farms; silage corn - Elmer
Powe; beans -Tom Triebner;
barley -Rene Van Bruwaene;
mixed grain - Gerald Dear -
ing; wheat - Bob Down and
hay - Hern Farms.
In the 4-H horse club com-
petition, the. showmanship
championships were won by
senior Cheryl Cann and junior
Darren Vandergunst.
Results in the rabbit youth
show were: Best Californian.

4-H beef calf Thanksgiving
show and sale
The second annual
Thanksgiving. 4-H Beef and
Calf Show and Sale will be
held at the Brussels
Stockyards Limited, Monday,
October 11th. Huron and
Bruce
County 4-H Beef Calves
ceepted.
Show time is 10:30 a.m.
with the sale to follow at 1:00
p.m. Jim Coultes of Wingham
will judge the show and MPP
Jack Riddell will auction.
Many of these calves will be
Guineas quality calves and
should make an excellent
showing. The general public
is invited to come out and en-
joy the show and sale.
Excellent lunch facilities
are available at the Brussels
Stockyards Limited.

Beware - roughage quality
low
The 1982 hay crop may need
some held from extra protein
supplement in the grain mix
to ensure dairy rations are
balanced for all essential
nutrients. This was not a good
year for harvesting quality
hay or haylage and as a result
dairymen are going to have to
pay close attention to sup-
plementing the proper pro-
tein, energy and minerals to
the milking herd.
In many Ontario dairy
herds, dry cows and heifers
are very poorly treated,
largely because they are not
contributing any immediate-
ly saleable product. This
mistreatment can often lead
to costly health problems,
poor feed intake, and poor
