A controlled hunt for the
County of Huron and Minto
township in Wellington coun-
ty will be in operation this fall.
The four day season will be
held from November 1 to
• November 4. Shotguns and
muzzleloaders are the only
weapons which may be used.
Successful applicants are en-
titled to hunt antlered or
antlerless deer.
A Maximum of 720 hunters
will be permitted to par-
ticipate in the hunt in Zone 85
(220 in Zone 115A; 300 in Zone
85B; 200 in Zone 85C); Should
the number of applicants ex-
ceed this limit, a com-
puterized draw will be held in
early October. Successful ap-
plicants will be notified by
mail shortly thereafter.
Merger makes
dream come true
A dream came true Thurs-
day for a couple of area
harness race horse owners.
It all happened for Dave
Morrissey and Peter Oud
when their Merger won the
prestigious Little Brown Jug
in Delaware, Ohio and a purse
of $106,000.
Merger who set records last
year as a two year-old was
syndicated earlier this year
for 8.2 million won the first
division of the Little Brown
Jug in 1.55.3 and came back
four races later to capture the
big one in a time of 1.56.3 in
reasonably easy fashion over
the other heat winners Temu-
jin and McKinzie Almahurst.
After the race Dave Mor-
rissey said, "Winning the Lit-
tle Brown Jug is like having
a dream come true. He raced
like a real champion."
The three year-old son of
Albatross who was bred by
former Montreal Canadian
star John Ferguson will now
be taking aim at 'the
Messenger Stakes at
Roosevelt Raceway in New
York in October.
The Messenger is the third
leg of harness racing's triple
crown and a second win for
Merger would mean his syn-
dication returns could rise to
15 million.
The top two year-old of a
year ago is now owned joint-
ly by Morrissey, Oud, driver
John Campbell and the syn-
dicate of Mort Finder and Lou
Guide.
According to Morrissey, the
top syndication figure
depended on winning two legs
of the triple crown. As Merger
did not win the Cane, he must
do so in the Messenger.
As a two year-old Merger
set a record for his age
category of 1.53.4 at Lex-
ington, Kentucky.
The big win was also a
dream come true for Nairn
native John Campbell. A year
ago he was in Grady
Memorial Hospital in
Delaware after being injured
in the first elimination heat of
the same race.
Campbell's main comment
after Thursday's victory was,
"This is the best horse I have
ever had. Today, he finally
had his day."
It was Merger's first start
in about a month and the
layoff proved to be very
beneficial as he came four
wide at the three-quarters
mark to take the lead and win
handily in the first division.
Merger's earnings for 1981
and this year now total
$440,000.

New team outlook
This year's 'edition of the
South Huron junior girls'
basketball team certainly has
a brand new look! Of 15 team
members 10 are playing inter-
school basketball for the first
time and the remaining five
holdovers generally saw
limited action last season.
Because of this lack of
depth, it must be expected
that the team will have to
learn the hard way and such
was the case Monday when
the juniors dropped their first
league game 34-14 to Stratford
Northwestern.
In spite of the lopsided
score however, there are
several bright spots.
Irene Brand appears to be
headed for an excellent year;

tained in Monday's game is

The seniors In a real defen-

After the senior win, coach
Ron Bogart commented, "We
were lucky to come out at
halftime without any score as
Stratford Central threatened
at the final whistle."
The South Huron win coupl-
ed with a loss by the Goderich
Vikings to Norwell prompted
Bogart 'to add, "With
Goderich losing our win real-
ly amounts to a four pointer."
The only time either team
came near to a touchdown
was in the dying minutes of
the first half when. Stratford
moved inside the Panthers
five yard line and failed to
score on the next three plays.
The only South Huron
points came on singles kick-

the third and fourth quarters.
They went 45 and 35 yards,
respectively.

much offence. The Panthers
