Local couple mark 55th wedding event
The family of Whitney and
Viola Coates, Exeter,
celebrated their parents' 55th
wedding anniversary Satur-
day, September 25 with a
family dinner at the Cor-
kscrew Restaurant in London
and, afterwards, a social
evening at the apartment of
their daughter, Miss Wilma
Coa les.
Those in attendance were
Richard and Shirley Doherty,
Miss Debra .Doherty, Mr.
Richard T. Doherty from
Mount Clemens, Michigan;
Christopher and Denise
CROWN FAIR QUEENS — Six queens were crowned in the ladies division of the Exeter Fair Friday night. Handling
the crowning chores at the back were Liz Selves, Mary Thomson, Marjorie Johns, Dolores Shepton, Shirley Prance
and Joan Cooper. In front ore sewing queen Beatrice Fleming, baking queen Fern Dougoll, flower queen 110
Love, arts and crafts queen ReaGreene,sewing princess Nancy Smith and baking princess Mary Lou Rundle.
Area kidies capture titles
in Exeter fair•.contests
Ila Love of Exeter was
named flower queen at the
Exeter Fair Friday night hav-
ing accumulated the most
points. Josie Ryckman was
runnerup and also gained the
most points for
arrangements.
Prizes for best ar-
rangements,were won by Stan
Love, Sally Laing and Ila
Love. •
Beatrice Fleming was nam-
ed Sewing Queen and Mrs.
Elgin Nott, Clinton was
runnerup.
The wool outfit specials
were won by Nancy Smith,
RR 3, Exeter and Francis
Wynja, Seaforth; Gladys
Miller, Exeter won in mats
and quilts. •
The best quilt at the fair
was shown by Ethel Merner,
Zurich with Gladys Miller as
runnerup. Ann Klungel, Hen -
sell was the crochet winner
and Donna Price, Exeter was
best in knitting. Tina Kingma,
Dashwood won the crochet
afghan special and Betty
Charlton. Denfield . had the
best knitted children's
sweater.
The new Baking Queen is
Fern Dougall with Mrs. Lorne
Fell, Staffa as runnerup.
Mary Johns, Exeter won the
Cadbury -Schweppes - Powell
chocolate dessert special and
the Neilson chocolate. cake
special was won by Mary
Szabo, Kirkton.
In home canned products
Dolores Shapton was the win-
ner and Bev Prout and Fern
Stewart were tied for first in
jams and jellies. Kathy Bray.
won the new potato feature
and the white eggs special
went to Fern Dougall.
The Women's Institute
displays prize was won by the
Grand end ;,Institute and
Thames Road UCW 'won for
women's organization
display.
Winners in the Golden Age
competition were Doreen
Anderson, RR 2, Hensall and
Mrs. Kleinhaar, Hensall.
Rhea Greene, Exeter was
named arts and crafts Queen
and Mary Thomson, Kippen
was second.
Donna Voerman, Exeter
and Eva Laing, Kippen tied
for first in painting and sket-
ching, Bruce Thomson, Kip -
pen won in woodworking And
Laurie Kraftcheck, Exeter

Kippen U.C.W. was held in
the Sunday School rooms
September 21 with 17
members and one visitor
present:
Mrs. Lloyd Cooper opened
her timely worship service
with a poem entitled
"September mi nning" follow-
ed by the hymn, "We plough
the fields and scatter". Her
scripture, taken from Psalm
125 on giving thanks, led to a
discussion which reminded us
that we must count our bless-
ings and truly appreciate the
high standard of living which
we enjoy.
Guest speaker for the even-
ing was Mrs. Joan Robinson
from Millar's Barn who
discribed for members the
background of seminole pat-
chwork and demonstrated
step by step how this intricate
fabric patching is done. She
also showed how this techni-
que facilitates constructing
the Lone Star quilt.
President. Mrs. David
Turner chaired the meeting
and roll call was answered
with a canning hint. Ladies
were reminded of a Fall
Regional being held October
5 at 7 p.m. at Thames Road
United Church.
The finance committee
reported a donation was being
sent to the M & S Fund of the
church in commemoration of
the 20th anniversary of the
organization of U.C.W.
Plans were begun for the
fowl supper held early in
November. Courtesy remarks
were given by Mrs: Edison
McLean. Lunch was served
by the cohostesses Mrs. Lloyd
Cooper and Mrs. Percy
Wright.
Sympathy is expressed to
the McGregor family at the
death of Mrs. Arnold Petrie,
the former "Nell" McGregor.
Crediton girls
do jiffy bags

The Crediton Crazy
Campers 4-11 club opened
their second meeting
September 13. with the 4-11
pledge.
President, t'arolyn Prit-
chard started the roll call.
Members discussed • the
materials needed and how to
put together our jiffy bags.
They also discussed the
philosophy of William H. Dan=
forth, -the founder of Ralston
Purina Company and the
Danforth Leadership Camp.
There was a display set up
at the Exeter Fair on the dif-
ferent -qualities of eggs. '
was best in wood carving.
In photograptiy John
Dobbs, Exeter won the most
points in class 45 and had the
best print in show. The other
winner was Marion Shantz,
Plattsville.
Nancy Smith was named
junior sewing princess with
Cathy Norris as runnerup and
Smith won the wool skirt
special.
In baking Mary Lou Rundle
was crowned junior princess
and Donna Taylor, Hensall
was second. Tracey Dietrich,
won the buttermilk bread
special.
. Tracey Weicker, New Ham-
brug was the junior arts and
crafts winner and Sharon
Fell, Staffa was second. The
SHDHS visual arts special
was shared by Karen Haist,
Centralia and Cathy Norris,
Grand Bend.
