Sports
Spotlight
By Ross Haugh
While baseball, soccer and football are sort of
holding the spotlight in sports circles at the moment,
the 1982-83 hockey season is not far away.
Actually there is already activity on the local scene.
Officials of the South Huron intermediate hockey league
are organizing for another term.
League president John Snell tells us he expects the
same five teams from last year to be back along with
a home and home schedule with the same number of
teams from the North Oxford league.
The five teams returning to South Huron league
play will be the defending champion Zurich Buckeyes,
Hensall Sherwoods, Centralia Marauders, Centralia
College Saints and the Exeter Mohawks.
Coming up from Oxford for a single interlocking
schedule will be teams from Avonton, Lakeside,
Brooksdale, St. Marys and Rostock. These clubs play
their home games in St. Marys and Embro.
Snell said he saw a couple of the Oxford area
teams play a year ago and he thinks the calibre of the
two leagues is quite similar.
The Exeter Mohawks will have Jack Chipchase
back guiding the team from the bench while Dan Brint-
nell will replace Lewis Mitchell as manager. Chipchase
was named coach of the year last year.
Mitchell said he is also trying to find someone to
replace himself as the Mohawks representative on the
league executive. The main executive is made up of
president John Snell, vice-president Mike Cronyn and
secretary -treasurer Shirley Rader.
Any new players wishing to try out with the
Mohawks should contact Dan Brintnell or Jack
Chipchase.
HUNTING SHOW
The hunters of Ontario, and the industry which
caters to their needs, will put their tradition proudly on
display at the 1982 Hunting Show, September 10, 11, and
12, at the International Centre in Mississauga.
The show will cover virtually every aspect of the
hunting tradition, with hands-on activities and
demonstrations as its key elements. It will also feature
one of tl-,.: largest displays of supplies for the hunter ever
assembled under one roof in Canada, including
firearms, bows and apparel.
Among the highlights of the three-day show are the
Molson Canadian open moose, goose and duck -calling
championships, a sporting -dog demonstration area,
featuring the training and handling of almost every ma-
jor hunting dog breed, and a hawk and eagle exhibition
by a master falconer.
To accommodate the hands-on activity theme,
there are ranges for archery, crossbow, slingshot and
air rifle shooting under the guidance of expert instruc-
tors. For the juniors, there are archery contests, decoy -
head whittling and air rifle shooting, all at no extra
charge.
As well, many of the province's leading conserva-
tion clubs will be manning information displays that
deal with such things as safe -gun handling, wildlife
habitat management and waterfowl identification.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ontario
Provincial Police will also be in attendance, giving
hunters an opportunity to clarify firearms and hunting
regulations with the government agencies involved. For
trappers, the Hudson's Bay Fur Centre will be hosting
workshops to upgrade their furhandling skills.
The 1982 Hunting Show is being sponsored by On-
tario Out Of Doors magazine, in conjunction with the
Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Inc., to
entertain and inform the hunting sportsmen of Ontario.
The International Centre is located on Airport
Road, one mile north of the Toronto International Air-
port and the show is open Friday, Saturday, September
10 and 11 from 10 p.m.; and Sunday, September 12 from
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For further information contact Nor-
ma Riordan (416)368-3011.
The calling championships are just part of the ac-
tivities being featured at the 1982 Hunting Show, the first
of its kind ever held in Canada'. It is also the first time
that all three major calling championships in moose,
goose and duck -calling have been held under one roof.
The lead-off round will begin on Saturday with
selection of the Ontario calling champions and the Cana-
dian Moose -Calling Champion. Sunday will see the
finalists in three categories compete against callers
from other provinces and the reigning Canadian cham-
pions for the laurels as Canada's best.
A distinguished panel of judges, including wildlife
experts and outdoor writers, have been picked to judge
callers under the watchful eye of contest co-ordinator,
Toronto lawyer and outdoorsman Iry Cochrane. Burt
Myers, editor of Ontario Out Of Doors magazine, and
John Power, outdoors editor of The Toronto Star, have
been selected to act as master of ceremonies.
Hawks to Practice
Exeter Hawks new manager Don Campbell has an-
nounced dates for the first practices for the team in
preparation for the 1982-83 OHA season.
The first scrimmage is set for Tuesday night,
September 14 at 9 p.m. at the Stephen township arena
at Huron Park with the second scheduled for the same
time and place Thursday night.
Campbell welcomes anyone interested in trying out
for the club. Bob Rowe is this year's coach.
The first league game for the Exeter club will be
Friday, October 15 when they play host to their arch
rivals, the Lucan Irish, last year's OHA Junior "D"
champs.
They won more
In last week's issue we said the Exeter juniors had
only won five games prior to their four game sweep to
the OBA championship.
We were out a little. They actually won 11 games
previous to the OBA playoffs in Kincardine.

Dashwood ousts
local tykes.
The Exeter • Tykes ended
their season on a losing but
positive note Saturday as they
iropped their second straight
decision to Dashwood 8-2.
Friday night, Dashwood
outlasted the locals 12-10 after
they built up a 7-0 lead in the
early innings.
Saturday's game featured
fine pitching and tight defen-
sive work by both teams, but
in the end Dashwood took ad-
vantage of their chances
while the Exeter boys could
not muster the timely hit.
Todd Laporte was tough in
the clutch for Dashwood as he
stranded seven runners on
base. Dashwood -did not leave
a base runner.
Harlen Tinney and Scot
Russell both pitched well for.
Exeter who scored their only
runs in the fourth inning on
singles by Todd McCann,
Doug Clark and Jeff Chip -
chase. Brent McDonald had
two hits for Exeter.
Friday night's game also
featured a strong perfor-
mance by Laporte, who got
early support from his team-
mates as they built up their
early lead. After getting into
early trouble Scot Russell
settled down to pitch fine
baseball before getting relief
help from Tinney.
Mark Burton, Mark Russell
and Todd McCann lead the
Exeter offense with two hits
each while Justin Charette,
Brent McDonald, Doug Clark,
Scot Russell and Steve Sillery
had one each.
Despite losing both games,
the local boys performed well
and can be proud of their pro-
gress in their first year in
baseball. Coaches Tom
McCann and Dan Brintnell
would like to thank the tyke
parents for their enthusiastic
support and encouragement
throughout the season.
