Expanded U.S. bean crop
causes Broadwe// concern
Expanded acreage and a
possible 1982 bumper crop in
Minnesota and North Dakota
is causing concern for white
bean producers in Ontario.
This message was issued
Wednesday by Ontario Bean
Producers Marketing Board
manager Charles Broadwell
at the annual Crops Update
day at Centralia College.
Broadwell continued; "The
potential in those two states is
phenomenal. The sizes of
their farms are awe inspiring
and they have 10 feet of top
soil to work with. Their com-
petition is certainly real."
In 1979, the amount of dry
beans produced in Minnesota
and North Dakota was 598,000
bags. This year the estimate
is in excess of two million
bags.
Broadwell said Ontario pro-
duction coming mainly from
Middlesex, Huron, Perth and
Lambton counties is up 5,000
acres this year to 115,000
acres and yields of I,600,000
bags are expected. This
would be an increase of
150,000 bags over the 1981
crop.
Adding to the problem for
Ontario growers and - the
market is a potential five and
a half million bags from
Michigan producers. A year,
ago their production figure
was around the four million
bag mark.

If all areas produce up to
their potential the overall pro-
duction figure for white beans
would be about 9.1 million
bags this year. Broadwell
said the previous high was in
1973 when 8.3 million bags
went to market.
' Most of the 1981 crop has
been sold. Broadwell added,
"We should have, last year's
crop cleaned up by the time
our first new beans are
harvested. I expect the final
1981 payment cheques will be
in the mail by November 1
bringing the overall return to
about $29 per bag."
The marketing board
manager stressed the need.
for better quality beans say-
ing, "Our industry is based on
quality. We have slipped a lit-
tle and we have to get that
back. OMAF has purchased a
farm in New Zealand which
will allow for two crops a year
and should provide for better
seed."
According to Broadwell the
1982 Ontario crop is at least
one week behind as far as
harvesting times are concern-
ed. Harold Rouget, a crops
specialist from Michigan
State University reported the
same problem in his state
saying, "This is the largest
amount of late beans we have
ever had."
Rouget stressed the need
for soil testing and the use of
micro -nutrients where
necessary and talked about
direct combining which•is be=.;
ing tried in some areas.
A plant°breeder from the
University of Guelph Wally
Beversdorf said farmers
would have upright beans in
their fields in 10 years which
would make direct harvesting
much easier.
While no new . beans have
yet been harvested in Ontario.
Broadwell said the current
price in Michigan was $15 per
bag which would amount to
about $18 for the Canadian
crop.

Actual Size With Exposure
To Approximately
2,480 Area Homes
Each Week
Almost every advertiser has, at one time
- or another asked us "jokingly" to run their
advertisement on our front page.
In the 'past we have _ not accepted any
advertising on our front page, but now a
decision has been made to sell the one col-
umn by four inch spot occupied by our moil-
ing label. ' d
The Times -Advocate is 'Huron County's
largest paid circulation newspaper, with
over 6,000 customers each week. Three
thousand five hundred and twenty homes
-take the paper by mail with their name and'
address going on the top left hand corner
of the front page.
This leaves two thousand four hundred
and
eighty exposures y e posures for your odver-
tising to people who buy the T -A on a
regular basis from our network of
dealers in the area.
For the first time ever this prime
advertising space is offered for sale.
Imagine the exposure and prestige
your business will receive by being the
only place to have an advertisement
appear on the front page.
Because of the large number of advertisers
who -use our newspaper on a regular basis
and the very high demand for this premium
advertising spot, there is only one fair way
to sell the front page adveftising.
The Times Advocate invites advertisers to
tender on the front page space for a one
year period beginning with our issue of
September 15.
The space will be sold under the following
conditions.
• Copy changes will be mode a maximum
of once per month
• Advertiser agrees to run for 52 con-
secutive issues
Written tenders marked Front Page Adver-
tising must be received by 10 a.'m.
September 7, 1982.
Tenders will be opened at this time and the
advertising space will be sold to the
highest bidder.
Please address all tenders to
Front Page Advertising Controct,
c, o Jim Beckett.
