Learn of times through ads
In today's magazines,
we're accustomed to seeing
ads on almost any type of pro-
duct, but in the 1950s, adver-
tisements were more limited.
A glance through a 1950 Cana-
dian Geographical Journal
of Mines stands ready at all
times to give every assistance
possible through the medium
of comprehensive reports,
maps and literature pertain-
ing totfhisJ all important
element."
By Elaine Townshend
tells us a lot about the times,
just by reading the ads.
For example, The Ontario
Department of Mines an-
nounced "Gold Has
Rival...with the advent of the
atomic age, gold and other
precious metals which beckon
so strongly, have a rival in the
form of uranium - a rival
created by scientific
developments in the field of
atomic or nuclear energy..."
"It is to the location of
deposits of radioactive
minerals that the attention of
the prospector is now, in ever
increasing degree, directed,
and it will be largely due to
his efforts that Ontario's posi-
tion as a source of uranium
ore will be determined.."
"The Ontario Department

Meanwhile, General Elec-
tric was touting a better way
to sell the light bulb. "Here's
the new and better way to buy
lamps - 4 G E lamps in one
strong carton, easy to carry
home, handy to store. You'll
never again have to rob one
socket to fill another - because
you'll always have a replace-
ment on hand when a lamp
burns out.."
"It pays to ask for G -E
lamps by name - they stay
brighter longer."
The Westinghouse Savoy
was a "modern, compact
radio -phonograph combina-
tion with exclusive
'Polyphonic' Reproduction
and fully automatic record
changer.."

The price was$194:50 with

$214.50 with three -speed

McGill University offered a
Geography Summer School at
Stanstead College, Stanstead
Quebec. "Plan now to enroll
in this already popular six
weeks' vacation summer
school which is of increasing
significance to teachers,
students, members of the
armed forces, civil servants
and the general public..."
"The school is situated in a
region of unusual
geographical interest and
beauty on the Quebec -
Vermont border.. Comfor-
table accommodation in a
modern co-educational col-
lege...Inclusive fee (board -
residence -tuition), $200...Two
scholarships for Canadian
students and two for overseas
students (value $250. each)
awarded by the Canadian
Geographical Society."
On another educational
note was Everyman's En-
cyclopaedia (entirely new
edition in 12 volumes).
"World's • finest En-
cyclopaedia ever issued at
such a low price...Only $3.00
a volume...special price on
complete set, $33.00..."
"This edition is printed on
paper specially made after
long experiment. It is com-
pletely satisfactory in finish
and opacity, and permits the
volumes to open well. The
type is clear and easy to read.
The binding is a handsome,
strong blue cloth lettered in
gold...over 2,500 illustra-
tions...over 8,500,000 words.
Next week - a look at
magazine ads for brand new

per pound from last month,
while the farm -gate

cents to $1.99 per pound.

increased three cents to $1.13
per pound. Pork prices were
down one cent at retail to $2.28
