Times-Advocate, 1982-07-28, Page 13Second half victory for Gunners soccer club The Exeter Gunners soccer team chalked up another victory Thursday night with a 3-0 win over Lucan. As the score indicated it was no easy task with all the scoring being , done in the second half. The Gunners passed from the start and had many shots go wide of the net. Sisavay's shot hit the left hand goal post and ran along the goalline to hit the right hand post before coping back put. Cocain mounted a strong at- tack which was handled well by Danny Marten, Mark Glavin, Dwayne Finkbeiner and Sisavay allowing only one shot to reach the goal area, In Ontario easliy handled by goalie Shawn Gillespie, Gunners were unlucky not to score just before halftime when the Lucan goalie fell on a Fred Steciuk shot to stop it on the goat line. Immediately after the kick off in the second half, Fred Steciuk found himself alone at the side of the Lucan goal and lifted a high shot Over the goalie's head to give the Gun- ners the lead. Sisavay had been held scoreless by some good run- ning by the Lucan defense but he finally got free to blast the Gunners second goal. The Gunners then faced a series of goalkicks as Fred Skeciuk, Sisavay, Sivichay, Stephen Cregan, Paul Char- rette, Shawn Webster and Shawn Gillespie continually beat Lucan to the ball but could not put the ball in the net. With five minutes remain- ing Sisavay put the game away with his second of the night. Brad Glavin had replaced Shawn Gillespie in goal at half time and Gary Cregan provided good relief for the forward. Gunners next game is tomorrow night Thursday in Arva. Three million fish, hunt 'By BD' McNutt A recent survey by Ontario Out of 1 ..rs magazine has brought :ether some in- teresting facts on the numbers of hunters and fishermen in Ontario. They discovered that only one percent of sampled hunters and fishermen belong to the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. Using the fact that there membership is just over 28,000, there are nearly three million people hunting and fishing in our province. The magazine itself reaches 200,000 readers. I tried to get some figures on the number of Hunting licences sold in Ontario, but all I could confirm was sale of 97,500 archery last year. If all these people would join the provincial organiza- tion they would definitely form , a solid block - to work with the government on gun control. Earlier I wrote about groups of sportsmen organiz- ing to oppose the government. Well, a Kingston group presented a 2,700 name peti- tion to Natural Resources Minister Alan Pope and they will now get brown trout stocked in Eastern Lake Ontario. Although browns are not stocked in our area a few are caught near Sarnia, Bayfield and Goderich. In fact the On- tario record came from Lake Huron near Douglas Point. Last year's Molson big fish contest winners took some super sized fish including a 40 lb., 143/4 oz. Chinook from Bronte Creek; a 55 Ib. Muskie from Wabigoon Lake (another 55 Ib. has been taken since) ; a 20 lb., 5 oz. Coho salmon from Lake Erie; a 32 lb. Kenogamissi Lake Pike was tops. Other top fish in- cluded a 24 lb., 11/2 oz. Rain- bow; 81b., 5 oz. Brook Trout; 17 lb. Walleye; 7 Ib. 5 oz. Smallmouth and 81b., 41/2 oz. Largemouth Bass. Other notable fish caught this year include Ontario record splake 16 Ib., 5 oz; a near record Palimino trout of 91b., 2 oz. and a Rod and reel World RecordLake Sturgeon from the Nottawasaga River weighing 168 lb. Who says Ontario doesn't still have quality fishing? We would really appreciate Mosquitoes beat Nairn The Exeter soccer mos- quitoes scored an impressive 11-4 victory over Nairn to up their season record to three wins, two losses and one tie. Nairn scored early in the game as the Exeter defense lapsed. About -10 minutes in- to the game, Jeff Kints scored his first of four goals to put Exeter'at a tie. Chris Weernink popped in two more goals before Nairn came back to make the score 3-2. Before the half was over Tim Van dam passed to Jeff Kints who scored his second goal of the game. In the second half, Exeter rallied and controlled the whole game with goalie Ran- dy MacDonald, fullbacks Doug Kells, Steven Selves and Graham Arthur controlling the defensive part of the field. Taking away Nairn's attack completely, halfbacks David Ferguson, Henry Debruyn and Rick Topp kept the ball in Nairn's zone allowing Mike Rankin and Eric Remkes to score two more goals and Jeff Playfoot a single. Excellent game played by all. Exeter mosquitoes meet Arva Wednesday night at 7:00 in Arva to try to maintain their winning streak. Barnie Strassburger, president and owner of the Twins Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise announced after the event that his organization would make up the $800 difference. On the fairways at the Iron- wood club, Wayne Parsons was the low gross winner with a score of 78 and Gabby Mol with a 61 was the low net best.
