Any Ontario resident aged 6 to 18 years who excels in com- munity work, performs an act of heroism or struggles to overcome a physical or men- tal disability is eligible to win the Junior Citizens award. The program, a joint com- munity service project of the community newspapers of Ontario and CP Air, invites nominations from you the citizens of Ontario who recognize potential award winners in your communities. Nominations forms are available at any of the 215 On- tario Community Newspapers Association member newspapers and local elementary and secon- dary schools. Launched in 1981, the awards program honored its inaugural winners at the an- nual community newspaper convention held in Toronto in early March. They included seven who were commended for heroic, lifesaving actions; three who have shown excep- tional initiative in communi- ty service projects; and three with physical limitations who are striving to overcome their disability and meet or exceed the achievements of other young people. A group award was given in 1981 to the entire student body of Ecole Georges -Vanier in Smooth Rock Falls for their long-term dedication in assisting two physically han- dicapped students and the community as a whole. These two students, Julie Lemieux and Andre Beaulieu represented the school at the awards ceremony. The 1981 individual winners each received their award from the Lieutenant Gover- nor, John B. Aird, a lapel pin, plaque, *200, and a family portrait with the Lieutenant Governor. They were: Amber • Anderson, 10, of Parry Sound, who spent her summer raising almost *2000 for the hospital campaign; Linda Anne Angus, 9, of Cornwall, an asthmatic, who saved her paraplegic mother's life by applying mouth-to-mouth resuscitation when her mother stopped breathing; Want street opened up The Exeter planning board got back on track this month after two recent sessions had to be cancelled due to lack of a quorum. Only chairman Stu Homuth was absent from July 14 ses- sion at which time several major recommendations were sent to council. Included was the alternate route study and a recommen- dation that Pryde Boulevard be extended through to Huron St. East. Council decided to table the report at their meeting this week with no action being taken on the recommendations. Monday's meeting was shortened to allow members to attend patrons' night at the Huron Country Playhouse. It is expected the recom- mendations from the plann- ing board will be discussed at the next council session in August. People who are hard to please are often the most worth pleasing.
