"We stand in the labors of

our churches," he added, en-
couraging the. congregation

responsibility to preserve and
promote the heritage of the
church and the community.
Several cabinet colleagues
of the Hon. C.S. MacNaughton
gathered in the park in the
afternoon. for the official
renaming and the weekend
ended up'with a country and
. music show and an old -
,timers' baseball game at the
• community park.
Exeter council members
_ were high in their praise for
the efforts of. the Heritage
Days committee and others
who worked on the project
and agreed to send a letter of
appreciation on behalf of the
town to the committee.
Councillor Dorothy Chap-
man said Monday the type of
dedication and spirit that was
displayed by the committee
and those who enjoyed the
weekend activities was what
makes Exeter unique.
It was a tremendous
weekend," added Councillor
Gaylan Josephson in moving
that the letter of thanks be
sent to those who had worked
so hard • on arranging the
Program.
"I hope there will be a se-
cond one next year," com-•
mented Mayor Bruce Shaw.
Several colleagues on band to hlp honor McN.ughton
"I don't know anyone whose
name should be carried on for
posterity more than Charlie
MacNaughton's," com-
mented Elmer D. Bell, Q.C.
in brief remarks outlining the
background of the popular
politician who had Riverview
Park renamed in his honor,
Sunday.
Bell, a former president of
the Ontario Progressive Con-
servative Association; was
one of several political
dignitaries on hand for the
occasion.
Former cabinet ministers
W.A. Stewart and John White
were in attendance from Lon-
don along with Eric Winkler
from Bruce County, Jim
Jessiman who travelled all
the way from Thunder Bay
and Jack Simmonet. Fred
Pilgrim, a former deputy -
minister in the department of
highways, was also in
attendance.
Communications were
received from a long list of
MacNaughton's former col-
leagues including Premier
William Davis and former
premier John P. Roberts.
"He had a long and
dedicated career and had a
profound impact on the pro-
vince," wrote Davis. "You
served with dedication and
determination and we have
much for which to thank
you."
Your name will always be
associated in Ontario with
what is best in the world of
politics and I can think on no
finer tribute to a very special
Ontarian than to have a park,
located in the Riding and the
Province you have served so
well, bear your name,"wrote
Davis.
Mayor Bruce Shaw, who
chaired the ceremony held in
front of the flowered town
crest at the park entrance,
said MacNaughton per-
sonifies the sense of com-
munity service and involve-
ment and made great con-
tributions to his community,
province and country.
Noting the assistance given
Exeter during his 15 years in
Ontario politics, Shaw ex-
plained that life was much
more rewarding for
municipal councils when the
Huron riding was represented
by Charles MacNaughton.
"There's a great dearth
now to what we used to have,"
Shaw said. Turning to Mac -
Naughton he added, "and
that's•the truth."
Noting the Riverview Park
was worthy *of carrying the
name of the man who set a
record by holding nine dif-
ferent cabinet portfolios,
Shaw said the former Huron
MPP "deserves to be shown
now he is appreciated."
He noted that the future of
Ontario was directed by a
group of men in a narrow
band of Western Ontario;

Bill Stewart and Elmer Bell.
Its a privilege to talk
about my friend Charlie,"
commented Bell, who was
asked to give a background on
the forme? Huron MPP.
"It's a;great think that
Charlie's name be
perpetuated in this lovely
park," he said, noting that
MacNaughton had served his
community and province with
kindness and compassion.
Called on to make some
spontaneous remarks, former
cabinet colleague William A.
Stewart noted that Mac -
Naughton was always most
appreciative of what could be
done to better the life of peo-
ple in rural Ontario.
He paid tribute to what the
Exeter man was able to dotest
the many important cabillMt
posts he held and noted that

history was relived.
Councillor Morley Hall

the part of pioneer James

Hall said this was a chance
to gaze back through the,tun-
nel of time and he found it
rewarding and challenging.
Shaw added, "The
townships have added great
vitality and new dimension to
our community."

Ontario Legislature."
In his brief remarks, Mac -
Naughton thanked his two
former premiers for allowing
him the opportunity to do
things for people.
In reference to the many
benefits he returned to his
riding, MacNaughton said
"we never got anything we
weren't entitled to:"
"This is the best place to
live, anywhere," he conclud-
ed, "and we hope to be among
you for a long time."
He was visibly moved by
the occasion and was flanked
by his wife, Addie, and their

Heather, along with a grand-
daughter Mary Beth, and
daughter-in-law, Gail.
A plaque was unveiled for
the renaming of the park and

Commission, which had been
established under the
mayoralty of Si Simmons, has
turned the balance of their
funds of $905.99 over to the
town's Industry and Tourism
Promotion Committee.
Councillor Bill Mickle in-
dicated the money would be
used to reprint the town's cur-
rent brochure as only 100 of
the original 500 printed were
still on hand.
Recommendations adopted
from other committees at
Monday's brief session of
council were as follows:
That the 1982 budget be ex-
amined in October to see what
funds might be available to
donate to the Township of
Tuckersmith towards
operating cdsts of the indoor
swimming pool at Vanastra.
Accepted the quote from
Adams Heating to instal a
stainless steel chimney liner
while the firm is installing the
new gas furnace at the llbrary
and also that a millivolt con-
trol system be included to
allow for minimum heat from
the furnace during a power
failure. Cost of the two addi-
tional items to the furnace
contract is $686.60.
Learned from engineer
B.M. Ross & Associates that
word is expected shortly from
the ministry regarding the
amount of direct grants the
town will receive for the $1.1
million sewer expansion
program.
