Only third winner
Toronto Blue Jay pitcher Jim Clancy became only
the third Toronto player in history to win the American
League player of the week award for the week ending
June 20.
Previous Blue Jay winners were designated hitter
Otto Velez for outstanding performances July 23-29, 1979
and pitcher Dave Stieb for great pitching April 21-28,
1980.
Clancy who is 25 years of age and a native of
Chicago pitched two excellent games during the week
defeating California 2-0 on a five hitter on June 16 and
followed that up with a 10 inning, three hit outing against
Oakland only three days later. Clancy had no decision
in that start which the Jays won 3-1, but fanned 10 and
gave up one unearned run.
Clancy's two good outings gave him a streak of on-
ly one earned run in his last 28 innings and no earned
runs in his last 24 innings.
For his player of the week achievement Clancy will
receive a watch from the Lafayette Watch Company.
Runnerup for the week was Texas Ranger third
baseman Buddy Bell.
Blue Jays first baseman Willie Upshaw, who finish-
ed in the runner-up position in May in the Labatt's Blue
player of the month award, continued his slugging into
June and captured the award for the third month of the
1982 season.
Upshaw collected 79 points for a 19 -point margin
over second baseman Damaso Garcia's 60 points. He
will receive $250 for winning the award and• an addi-
tional $250 will be given on his behalf to the charity of
his choice. Garcia receives the runner-up's prize of $50.
Upshaw batted .240 while playing in all of the Blue.
Jays 26 games in June and was instrumental in a
number of games with his slugging performances. He
hit seven home runs and had 18 runs batted in and of
his 23 hits, over one-half were for extra bases (two
doubles, three triples and the seven homers). The extra -
base hits gave him 52 total bases for the month for a
. 542 slugging percenttage. His seven homers and 18 RBI
are only two each short of the Blue Jays monthly record
- nine homers by John Mayberry in September, 1980 and
20 RBI by Otto Velez in May, 1980.
Upshaw was named the Labatt's Blue player -of -the -
game on six occasions. His best streak was in the Blue
Jays -Cleveland series early in the month when he won
three player -of -the -game nominations. He hit safely in
all four games of the series, batting .538 and collecting
eight rbi on the strength of four home runs in the last
three games of the series.
He homered in each game of the doubleheader on
June 6 and from the second game of the twinbill into
the next game -on June 7, Upshaw connected for three
home runs in three consecutive official at bats. He hit
a two -run home run off Ed Glynn in the sixth inning and
walked his next time in the eighth. The following day,
June 7, he hit two home runs, both off John Denny in
his first two at bats of the game - a solo shot in the first
inning and two -run homer in the third inning, which
turned out to be the game -winning hit and rbi.
He was also named player -of -the -game on three
other occasions including June 14 vs. Oakland for his
two -run homer off Matt Keough in a 4-2 Toronto loss.
He went 3 -for -4 on June 23 at Seattle with a home run
off Floyd Bannister in the top of the ninth to tie the game
at 2-2 and also on June 26 vs. Minnesota when he pro-
duced a two -run triple in the eighth to tie the game at
3-3 in a 4-3 Toronto loss.
Garcia batted .308 in 26 games with 36 hits including
nine doubles (one short of the club record for a month),
three home runs and eight rbi. His slugging average for
June was .462 and he continues to rank among the AL
leaders in batting average .314, second in hits 94 and
fifth in stolen bases 17. Upshaw leads the club in home
runs 10 and rbi 40 and ranks tied for fourth in the AL
in triples with six.
The voting for the award is conducted by the Toron-
to Chapter of the Baseball Writers. Six members vote
at each game, nominating a first and a second choice.
A player can pick up a maximum of 12 points per game
as two points are given for a first choice and one for
a second selection.
Following Upshaw and Garcia, right-hander Jim
Clancy was third with 47 points. The margin increased
as the next closest was centrefielder Lloyd Moseby at
27 points.
Is it over?
Two straight victories by the Detroit Tigers could
herald the end of one of the worst losing streaks a
Detroit Tigers baseball team has ever encountered.
The Tigers beat Texas Saturday and Sunday nights
after winning only four of about their last 21 starts and
they find themselves in fifth place in the American
league east only ahead of the New York Yankees and.
the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Detroitdilemmacameto its lowest point Thurs-
day, Friday and Saturday when they lost three games
in a row on a two run homer in the bottom of the ninth.
It was getting to be a riot to listen to'George Kell and
Al Kaline on the Tiger telecasts. Their comments were,
"We are spreading joy wherever we go" and "we again
snatched defeat from the jaws of victory."
In Saturday night's second game after Detroit lost the
opener on Lee Mazilli's two run homer in the ninth, Kell
said, "If we are leading by a run going into the last in-
ning, we will shut the cameras and microphones off and
let you know what happened by telephone sometime."
Local tykes lose
The Clinton tykes broke
open a close game with 10
runs in the fourth inning and
went on to hand the Exeter

the fourth. Brent McDonald
