Councillor
happy lines
to miss Huron
One Huron County coun-
cillor is glad hydrolines won't
be coming through the
county.
Hullett Township Reeve
•Tim Cunningham who
represented Huron County
throughout Consolidated
Hearings Board sessions in
Stratford this past winter,
brought the board's decision
to the attention of county
council. •
"Most of you have heard of
Hydro's, er, the Consolidated
Hearings Board's decision,
and I am glad to say the lines
aren't coming through Huron
County," said • Reeve
Cunningham.
The board announced its
decision on June 18, stating
route M3 was the one it
preferred over six lines
presented by Ontario Hydro.
Line M3 travels from Bruce
Nuclear Power Development
to: Esse near Barrie, through
Bruce and Grey counties. A
second line will travel from
Milton to the London area.
"Tlty put emphasis on
agric tures" Reeve Cunn
ingham said. •
Huron County, in two
separate motions, (one last
fall and one again in the
spring) endorsed line M1, also
Hydro's preference. Line M1
would have gone from BNPD
to London, through Huron
County east of Seaforth.
"We too are pleased," said
planning department
employee Roman Dzus.
He said the planning
department has not yet •
received a copy of the board's
decision, but once it does, a
report will be made.
"It is desirable that prime
agriculture land not be af-
fected," added Mr. Dzus.
No other comments were
made on the decision at
Huron county council's June
24 session.
Repaired after explosion
Day Care Centre reopens
Facility users, volunteers,
staff and polilcans gathered
at the Huron Day Centre for
the Homebound for its
reopening.
It was on Aug. 20 of last
year, that an explosion ripped
'through the auditorium of the
building which is located in
Huronview and on June 23
ceremonies marking the
reopening were held.
The clients who use the ser-
vices and volunteers heard
messages of congratulations
from Huron County Warden
Harold Robinson, MP Murray
Cardiff (Huron -Bruce),
MPPs Jack Riddell (Huron -
Middlesex), and Murray
Elston (Huron -Bruce),
Huronview's management
committee chairman
Usborne Reeve Murray
Dawson and David Harvey, a
representative of the Ministry
of Community and Social
Services.
A ribbon -cutting ceremony
was the highlight of the day,
with client Shirley Haggerty
and volunteer Mae Gibson
cutting the ribbon held by
Warden Robinson and Mr.
Harvey. A tour of the building
followed the ceremonies.
Co-ordinator of the Huron
My husband claims that I
don't always tell the truth in
this column. But I want to
reassure you that I certainly
do give the facts - the way I
see them. Someday, I.might
let him tell his side of the
story, but it will have to be a
good story.
For example, I don't see
how he could dispute my ac-
count of the events on Thurs-
day, the July first holiday. We
both opted to take that day
off, rather than having a long
weekend - you see, we thought
we could fool the sun into
shining on the Thursday;
something it won't do on a
weekend. Also, we knew that
.the government offices were
closed that day.
So we were surprised to see
some of our neighbours put-
ting out garbage Wednesday
night. We thought that
municipal employees would
have the day off, and there
• would be no garbage pick-up
on the holiday.
I woke up early Thursday
morning to the usual sounds.
Birds were chirping and the
compactor on the garbage
truck was roaring. I
wondered why my alarm
hadn't gone off, until I
remembered that it was a
holiday. Then I remember
that we hadn't put out our
garbage, and there was the
truck to collect it.
I knew we had three large
green bags stuffed full in the
garage, and if we ever got
some hot, sunny, summer
weather it would not make the
garage a pleasant place to
visit.
My husband, Victor, had
not heard the garbage truck.
In fact, he never hears the
garbage truck. If he's asleep,
I don't think he'd hear an in-
vasion - even if the army
tanks were on our front lawn
and the warships were crus-
ing up the "Cut" river.
I woke him, told him the
garbage truck was outside,
and suggested that we really
should put out those three
bags. Ile mumbled in his
sleep, and then, much to my
surprise, got out to bed, put on
his sweatpants, ran to the
garage, and carried out the
garbage.
Now many people enjoy get-
ting up before 7:'30 a.m., don-
ning a sweat suit and running
down the road. But that is not
Victor's idea of a good time.
He is not a morning person,
and that's putting it lightly.
Now, I'm not one to bounce
out of bed full of good cheer
either. But when people ask
me if I wake up grumpy, I

Day Centre Rosemary Arm-
strong said the explosion last
August destroyed the
auditorium and damaged
other areas of the building.
There is a silver lining in
every cloud though, and the
co-ordinator said the explo-
sion provided the opportunity
to update the facilities.
Windows blown out were
replaced, curtains and
carpets were replaced and
where there was once one old-
style washroom, there are
now two which will accom- •
modate those using a
wheelchair, kitchen facilities
were enlarged and the ceiling
in the auditorium was
lowered.
On average, the Day Centre
handles about 15 clients, four
days a week. Mrs. Armstrong
said the clients' needs could
not be met without the aid of
volunteers. She is the only
full:time employee; there are
two part-time employees and
volunteers make up the rest
of the staff, providing one-to-
one service for the clients.
On July 6, the Day Centre
hopes to open its doors five
days a week, a plan originaly
scheduled for last September,
but held back because of the
explosion.
Approve health
promotion post
A part-time position for
health promotion and
education for. the Huron
County Health Unit has been
approved.
Huron County Council
approved the position at its
June 24 meeting and if the
service is invaluable, it may
become a full-time position
in January of 1983.
Mary's
musings
By Mary Alderson
answer "no, I usually let him
sleep."
Victor saw a sunrise once in
his life - that was when I had
to get him up to catch an ear-
ly morning flight. He climbed
on to the plane and fell sound-
ly asleep, stirring only when
the attendant served coffee
with breakfast. Finally I had
to awaken him a• few hours
later to get off at our
destination.
So you can imagine my sur-
prise when he -actually got up
to take out the garbage. Un-
fortunately, the garbage
truck was long gone by the
time he got to the end of the
laneway. But our subdivision
is constructed so that what
goes in, must come out - by
the same route. Victor car-
ried the garbage out to the
corner and an understanding
driver stopped for it.
With his eyes still not con-
- pletely open, Victor crawled
back into bed. By this time,
our springer spaniel, Pepper,
was asking to be released
from his cellar bedroom, and
the budgies were squawking
from their covered cage. But
Victor refused to get up again
to look after the needs of our
menagerie.
In fact, he was already
asleep. When I suggested that
he could get up again, he
firmly said no, and reminded
me in no uncertain terms that
this was a holiday and he
wanted to sleep in. Just as he
was about to doze off, he
mumbled, "and I'm going to
write a column about this,
too.'
Medical Officer of Health
Dr. Harry Cieslar said
illnesses such as heart
disease and cancer are
related to lifestyles, but that
can be changed. Now, public
health nurses promote better
health on top of their other
duties.
He has interviewed Sheryl
Gilbert, a teacher who is
finishing her masters degree
in health education • and
behaviour and it is suggested
she be hired on a part-time
basis beginning in. Sep-
tember. About 85,000 had
been set aside in the budget
for a nursing student and this
could be used to hire Ms.
Gilbert three days per week
at 880 per day:
Council was told that if the
position was made full -tie
in January, it may he•
funded by reducing ad-
ditional nursing hours,
because the nurses would
spent less time on education.
Goderich Reeve Don
Wheeler expressed concern
that a position was . being
created ' without open
competition for it. Dr.
Cieslar said the position
would be advertised.
