The donation for $250 will be used for equipment for the new village team. Village hires new roads super St. Peter's group attends Seven young people from St. Peter's Lutheran Church along with three sponsors and Pastor Jack and Eileen Dressler left on Monday to spend a week in Vancouver attending a four day youth event of the Lutheran Churches in Canada. It is being held at the University of British Columbia. (The Dresslers also work with the program.) Martha Klopp left ahead of the group and spent a week with her sister, Diane Klopp who lives in Edmonton then met the 'others in Vancouver on Monday night. Activities for the fair will begin on Friday morning (Ju- ly 16) when the school children's exhibits will be entered and judged. The fair queen contestants will be introduced during the program but the announce- ment of the winner and crowning will take place dur- ing the dance in the arena. The orchestra for the dance is Mozart's Melody Makers. 4-H Agricultural clubs from South Huron will be presen- ting skits as part of the talent program. These skits are informative educational and entertaining as the 4-H members tell about the purpose of their club. The skits will be judged and the winner will compete in the regional competition at Strat- ford later in July. Prize lists for exhibits are available from the secretary of the Zurich Agricultural Society, Mrs. Margaret Deichert 236-4130. Some changes have been made in the program for Saturday. Exhibits for inside the arena must be entered before 10 a.m. so they can be judged for viewing at noon. The theme of this year's fair parade is story book characters. Livestock judging will take place throughout the after- noon. This year's horse show has some new events with classes for purebred Hafl- inger horses and saddle horses, as this year's horse shows are being combined and held on Saturday afternoon. Men and women will again be able to compete for trophies and cash prizes in the wrist wrestling championship. Other Saturday attractions will be the baby show and pet show. Something new this year will be a magic show for children presented by John Parker, "Mr. Magic", and a Rubik's Cube contest with three different age classes. Sing, dance at shower By Mary Chessell Varna Ron and Joyce Taylor, in company with Bill and Mildred Lobb, spent a week in the West, visiting Mrs. Lobb's sister and her husband of Calgary, and their sons Craig and Brian in Edmonton. Craig is employed with the city of Edmonton as a mechanic in the, municipal garage. Luanne Taylor has receiv- ed her diploma in Behavioral Science from Fahshawe Col- lege is presently employed at the Bluewater Centre. Graduating? Don and Debbie Rathwell held a family picnic at.their home on Sunday.'Guests in- cluded Gordon and Lois Col- eman, Dan and Marlene Fisher, Jodi and Jaimie, Ken and Debbie Coleman, Mark and Shelley Coleman, and Nancy Coleman, all of Walkerton, Ferne and Harry Baker, Mabel Reid, and all of Debbie's family. Gail Vanderwal was the recipient of many lovely gifts at a bridal shower in Varna hall on Wednesday evening. Doris Wilson welcomed these attending including the honoured guests. Bernice Reid announced the pro- gramme numbers, which in- cluded two song and dance routines by the Varna girls - Nancy Webster, Lori Consitt, Robyn Norman, Laura Roy and Monica Speziale. They were accompanied by Julie Webster at the piano and with ukuleles in the second number. Peggy Reid conducted a couple of contests and humorous readings were given by Bernice. Margaret McClymont read the address of good wishes, and Mrs. Vanderwal and Mrs. Kirnbauer assisted Gail in opening the gifts. Gail graciously thanked everyone for the gifts, and those who had arranged the shower and programme. Personals Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald VanAaken who celebrated their 25th wed- ding anniversary on Saturday. Julie Gelinas, Carmel Sweeney, Marie Gelinas, Zurich, along with Michelle Gelinas of Vancouver 'and Rosalie Harvey of Detroit were luncheon guests with Sharon Sweeney -at her apartment in London last Wednesday. Lee and Rose Regier are presently spending a two week vacation with their son and family, Richard and Janet Regier in Calgary. Ken and Donna Witmer of Detroit stopped at Ted and Irene Steinbach's Friday on their way to Niagara Falls for their honeymoon. Congratulations to Miss Louise Regier who graduated from Fanshawe School of Nursing, London, Victoria Campus on June 26. Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Eick- meier have moved to their cottage at St. Joseph for the summer months. Bruce was recently appointed chief of Dental Services at Victoria Hospital's Westminster Campus. In the near future they will move from Burlington to London. Bob Mittleholtz of India. Music is by Earl and Martha Heywood of Wingham and will be followed by a pot luck lunch and games for the children. Clarence Farwell and cousin Clem Farwell of Waterloo returned recently from a three week motor trip to Vancouver. They visited with cousins out west and the former's son, George Far- well in B.C. For those of you who are still wondering who will take over -the road superin- tendent's job at the end of the month after Carl Thiel retires, it is Dennis Regier. He was chosen out of the 19 applicants. We will all miss seeing Carl with his friendly smile working around town. We wish him many good and happy years ahead. Best wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to Gordon Lavery who is a patient in University hospital due to a motorcycle accident on Saturday. Also to Mrs. Verlyn -Buckeyes plan ball tournament Eight teams will be taking part in the Zurich Buckeyes annual ball tournament this weekend, July 9 and 10. The games begin Friday night with the Lieury Juniors playing Clinton. Local fans! will get a chance to cheer the! home team later that evening' as they play Arva. Saturday morning will see the remainder of the first round games as Lieury Jets meet Goderich and Sal•nia battles South Zorra. The championship game will begin at 7:30 Saturday evening at the ball diamond. Vancouver Fisher, Norma Parkins and Dorothy Ducharme who are in the hospital. A surprise birthday party was held for Mrs. Lydia Regier at the residence of, Mr. and Mrs. Clare Masse on Sunday afternoon. About 85 children and spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren at- tended the happy occasion. The chefs, Joe and Clem Regier, barbequed ham- burgers and hot dogs far the crew. The highlight of the day was when Lydia rode her grandson's Kevin Masse's horse. A large pork barbeque and pool party was held at the Durand farm on Saturday Lutheran hosted by Andre and Sharon for around 150 friends and relatives. A whole pig was cooked on a spit and enjoyed by all. Mrs. Emma Schilbe has returned home from a two week holiday in Calgary where she attended the wedding of a granddaughter, Marg and Bob Reid on June 19 and visited with three granddaughters and two grandsons and their families while there, also calling on a friend in Evansburg, Alberta. A successful fun day and pork barbeque was held at the community park on Canada Day.
