Thnes-Advocate July 7 1982 Third in league standings
Sports
Spotlight
By Ross Haugh'
Another Exeter native was selected in the recent
National Hockey league draft of junior hockey players.
Chris McCauley who was spent the past three years
with the London Knights was drafted as the llth choice
by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
McCauley was born in'Exeter and spent the first
six years of his life here while his father Terry
McCauley was resources manager of the Ausable Con-
servation Authority.
Chris was a defhceman for the first two years with
the Knights and this past season he was moved to right
wingandresponded with 48 goals and finished in eighth
place in the overall scoring standings of the Ontario
Hockey League.
Since the draft he has been talking with Ken
Schinkel of the Pittsburgh organization and is expected
to attend their training camp in the fall.
A year ago Chris attended the camp of the Quebec
Nordiques and also tried out with the Canadian junior
team which won a recent championship.
Chris is not the only member of the McCauley fami-
ly making a name for himself in hockey circles. Twin
brother Mike was with the Thornhill junior B team this.
past season and older brother Norm was with the Sud-
bury Wolves a couple of years ago and is now a member
of the Laurentian University team at Sudbury.
Good luck, Chris as you try to make the Penguins
this fall.
Interest in the NHL in this area would certainly be
revived if Dave Shaw made the Quebec Nordiques
roster and Chris McCauley was a member of the Pitt-
sburgh Penguins.
Leafs on the air
We quite frequently hear the complaint from
hockey television watchers that they would like to see
games other than those involving the Toronto Maple
Leafs each Saturday night.
That situation will get worse this year as all of the
Leafs games both at home and away will be carried on
CFPL radio 980 on your dial.
Harold Ballard must be trying to regain some of the
staunch Leaf fans that have deserted his team over the
last couple of years. The team will certainly have to im-
prove over recent years or we are afraid CFPL ratings
will drop drastically.
With all games being carried on. the Iocal station
that means close to 220 hours will be taken up during
the 1982-83 season by Leafs broadcast.
Still on CFPL, the station will again carry all games
of the Western Mustangs football team this fall.
Memories come back
Looking through an Intercounty senior baseball
league record book brought in recently by Tom Creech
quickly brings back a lot of memories. •
The batting champs over the years since 1928 in-
clude fellows like Oscar Judd, Frank Colman, Russ
Evon, George Miskimmons, Billy Flick, and Chuck
Males.
Oscar Judd betterknown as Lefty was with Guelph
when he won the 1933 batting title. Judd went on to a
fine career as a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox.
Russ Evon who was one of the premier softball pit-
chers in Ontario for sometime won batting crowns in
1946 with a .383 average and in 1952 with a mark of .361.
.George "Irish Miskimmons", a catcher with the
Stratford Nationals was the top batter in 1947 when he
hit .415. A member of the Stratford team at that time
was Harold "Gib" Stade of Zurich.
Going back a little farther we note the 1929 winner
was Clare Hoffman who was also a native of Zurich.
The only player to win the title with different teams
was Chuck Males with London in 1938 and with Brant-
ford three years later.
The highest batting mark ever recorded in the In-
tercounty was by Tom McKenzie of Kitchener in 1970
with a .446 mark.
Frank Colman of London who was the top batter in
1936 is best known for his major league career with the
New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Chris Speier, now with the Montreal Expos was the
Intercounty league all star shortshop in 1969 when he
was with Stratford and the manager of the year in 1968
was Ray Yelle, formerly of Parkhill.
A little closer to home, Hensall native Steve Kyle
then with Stratford was the centre fielder on the second
all star team in 1969.
Following is a poem gleaned from the London Ma-
jors program, It's called, "Just a Little Boy".
Just a little boy
He stands at the plate with heart pounding fast
The bases are loaded; the die has been cast
Mom and Dad cannot help him; he stands all alone.
A hit at this moment would send the team home.
The ball meets the plate; he swings and he misses.
There's a groan from the crowd; with some boos and
hisses.
A thoughtless voice cries, "Strike out the bum."
Tears fill his eyes; the game's no longer fun.
So open your heart and give him a break.
For it's moments like this, a man you can make.
Keep this in mind when you hear someone forget.
He's just a little boy and not a man yet.

some league revenge in the

A London -Western junior

was set by McClure, Jeff Rib-
bings, Jeff Moores and Ber-
