A real surprise for dad
Dear Dad: surprise, sur-
prise! Here's your Father's
Day wish four days early
from your daughter who's
often four days late. It's
enough to shock your socks
off, isn't it?
If you think you're getting
your present early, though,
you're wrong. I firmly believe
that gifts for special occasions
should never be given ahead
of schedule. Besides, I don't
have it yet.
It's not your fault, but hav-
ing a birthday less than a
month before Father's Day
makes it extremely difficult
for gift shoppers. I know you
liked your birthday present,
because it wasn't a tie.
Enclosed is the $26.881 bor-
rowed from you last month to
pay Mom back. Thanks!
Mom says she doesn't
remember all the bad things
I did, when I was a kid, that
I can recall. Either she
doesn't want to admit it, or
I've been waking around with
a guilty conscience for
nothing.
But, maybe you remember
the Sundy we went for a long
drive and ate a picnic lunch at
a roadside table. Not until we
got home at choretime did I
think about my sandals under
the picnic table.
You explained that it didn't

bably picked up by now
beseeching "t'atner",receiv-
ed the replay, "Don't beat
around the bush. Tell me
what you want".
Human nature is strange,
isn't it? You raised two
daughters on a dairy farm.
You had all that milk around,
Those sandals suddenly
became my favourite in the
whole world.
You were always the strong
silent type. I can't remember
you ever spanking or even
raising your voice much. But,
a look of disapproval from
you packedmore wallop to the
pit of a girl's stomach than
any hair brush could to her'
posterior.
You believed in getting to
the point, too. An imploring
"Dad dear" or a sophisticated

and neither of us would drink
a drop.
You didn't say anything,
though. You couldn't. You
wouldn't drink it either.
Remember the night you let
me drive the tractor in the
pasture behind the barn while
you and Mom milked the
cows? Before long, the trac-
tor and I disappeared in the
hollow. All you could see was
the stack going around and
around and around ih a short
distance of space. Mom got
worried, but you said calmly,
"That's just Elaine going in
circles." (I still spend a lot of
time doing that.)
I also recall the day i drove
my car for the first time. I
was doing about fifteen miles
an hour with a huge semi
bearing down from the rear.
I wanted to pull over, but you
calmly assured me he'd go
around me, not over me.
Now I drive a bit faster, and
when you ride with me, you
clench your fists a lot.
By the way, thanks for
bringing dirt for my planters.
If anything will make
geraniums grow, it's good
farm dirt, Right?
Rumour has it that Mary in-
herited Mom's green thumb
and cooking skids, wnue i in-
herited your stubborness.
After giving it careful con-
sideration, I've devided that's
probably true.
See you on Father's Day.
Although we don't have to
wait until special days to
remember, laugh or say
thanks, it's nice they come
along anyway. Love, Elaine.

Exeter church ladies
enjoy pot luck lunch
Unit 1 U.C.W. of Exeter
United Church opened the
June meeting with an en-
joyable pot luck luncheon and
social time. This was follow-
ed by a brief program and
business meeting.
Ann Brodie was in charge
of the program on the theme
"A Gift for aU Seasons." This
was based on the Parable of
the Talents or the Parable of
the Unfaithful Servant.
There were three people,
three gifts and three different
results. As we study the story
we realize the gift is the ser-
vants, and what they do with
their lives. The unfaithful ser-
vant never unwrapped his
gift. In fact he buried it.
What about us? Do we see
ourselves as gifts waiting to
be unwrapped or are our lives
like gifts, useless until we get
them opened? Do we see
others as gifts waiting to be
unwrapped?
Let us not miss the greatest
gift of all, the gift of Life.
Dorothy Wildfong, Anna
Coates, Ruth Ellwood, Leone
Brock assisted with the
p Thelma Russell conducted
the business reminding
members to use Summer time
to prepare items for the
November bazar.
