Actor Jack Medley was wounded during the assassination scene of a preview performance of Julius Ceasar, on the Strat- ford Festival stage, Friday. Sitting in the back row, I knew nothing of the accident. True, Caesar did not return fer a final bow... As Shakespeare sets the scene. a group of conspirators la the Roman senate fall on Caesar, stabbing him repeatedly in the chest and Caesar casts them off and staggering, sees Brutus approach. "Et tu, Brute" he groans, realizing that the nobelest Roman of them all is among the conspirators. Brutus tercefuily plunges in his knife rind Caesar falls. "Then die Caebag, " The stage erupts in mass csshEsiaa as the conspirators try to calm the rest of the senate. They discuss what is to be done and decide to show a solid front by washing their lands in Caesar's blood -a macabre action in retrospect, cealsidering the injured Medley. Perhaps not, but this is my Miscellaneous Rumblings By Rob Chester over the body of Caesar. In short (if ever this column can be accused of being that) if was a hell of a long time to lie there bleeding. If wounded • before his famous line, the actor must have mustered a tremendous amount of determination to shout stout. In any case, sheer determination, ignorance (of the seriousness of the wounds) or unconsciousness must have assisted Medley's stay on stage. I'm afraid "The show must goon! " would hold little sway if I were there bleeding. The story says: "A lance pierced Medley's 'protective padding and punctured his lung. He was rushed (sic) to Stratford General Hospital Friday night and underwent surgery (Saturday)," • The story mentions \ a broken rib, but according to a Free Press story, the retrac- ting knife worked properly but the force of the blow broke the rib which in turn punc- tured the lung. I have a strange sort of respect for actors, much ak- in to that engendered by race car drivers. It is hard to feel sympathetic if someone willfully drives a car too fast and slams it into a brick wall, but I feel respect and awe. One hardly expects a stage actor to face death nightly, but when it does come, the same sense of awe is created. The story went on to say Medley is expected to rejoin the cast in about two weeks. I expect, that even with pro- tective padding, his ribs will be more than a little tender. I think Caesar was my favorite of all the high school Shakespeare) was dragged, kicking and screaming, through. It is about nobility and honor and patriotism and having the courage of your convictions. Medley's action typifies the © PAINTS only criticism of the play: from the back row of the balcony, you got the feeling you were on a cloud watching, not being, part of the drama. The play was technically well done, but from the balcony, the milling of the crowd seemed like random motion and the battle scenes disjointed and confused. There is no one aspect you could say detracted from the play, but at the end Brutus' was dead and an evening•of entertainment over, but little feeling was left for character or fate.
