June 9,1982 Pogo 9 Craig reeve throws out turtle race chaflenge Sy Aua aaca+S Aliso Craig Ailsa Craig reeve John Whitmore said this week he would formally throw out a challenge itauntlet to London mayor Al Gleeson, Strathroy mayor Loren Gorman and Parkhill mayor Ron Shirran for a race between their turtles during Gala Days here July 17 and 18. "Big Al's doing a great job running city hall down there in London," Whitmore said, "but I'll wager he doesn't know a thing about racing' turtles, and I'll bet he can't find one in London to come close to any of the ones that live in these parts." Whitmore said he has notic- ed Ailsa Craig area turtles are getting faster every year. "It's • probably because they're tired of being caught and made to race every sum- mer;" he added. Whitmore said he would challenge the mayors this week and even offer them use of a local turtlefor the race "just in case he might feel I was trying to take unfair advantage." Meanwhile the Gala Days committee announced some "skill" events would be held during Gala Days with win- ners being awarded cash prizes for each. The events, in which con- testants will race against the clock include: log sawing, Rubik's Cube, nail hammer- ing, pole climb and donut eating. A slo-pitch ball game bet- ween CFPL radio and the Ailsa Craig Lionesses follows the opening of Gala Days at 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 16 at the Ailsa Craig dome stadium. . Next euchre is June 16 at 1:30 p.m. Library busy Recently there has been a lot of activity at the local library. Vicky Sutherland was welcomed as a new member of the staff. Wednesday Margaret Wilson attended a workshop on storytelling sponsored by the Lake Erie Regional Library System and held at Northland Branch of the London Public Libraries. The same day the rest of the staff were at the Mid- dlesex County Library in Ar- va choosing new books. • Soon the book exchange will be completed and there will be new books for the library patrons to read. ` The staff are also busy planning and preparing for another Summer Reading Programme for the children. Personals Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Ron Whitmore (Lynn Marie Northey) who were married Saturday in the Trinity Anglican Church. Mr. Earl Rees attended the Multiple District Lions con- vention in Toronto during the weekend. Attending the 15th Westminster Weekend for United Church Women on the weekend were Miss Wilma McIntosh and Mrs. Ray Campbell. For the June Birthday Par- ty at the Craigholme the Eleanor Charlton band sup- plied toe -tapping music. Mrs. Vera Greenlee, Exeter and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Greenlee visited with Mr. Calvin Greenlee and Mrs. Gladys Fraser of the Craigholme. Guests from Lucan district and Bryanston as well as the Craigwiel apartments gathered Saturday afternoon in Phase 3 Lounge to extend best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Filip Johnansen who were celebrating their 45th wed- ding anniversary.
