Older and better
The saying "Not getting older; but, getting better"
is heard quite often.
This phrase seems to apply to a couple of veteran
major league baseball players this season.
First of all Gaylor Perry became the 15th player
in big league history to record 300 victories and just a
week ago, Chatham native Fergie Jenkins recorded his
3,000 strikeout.
Perry's achievement is greater not only because he
is over the age of 40 years, but, is only the fourth player
to win that many games in relatively modern times.
Besides Lefty Grove (1925-41), Early Wynn
(1939-63) and Warren Spahan (1942-65), the 300 club
members began their careers before or shortly after the
turn of the century.
Those were the days pitchers worked often and long
and were expected to finish what they started. If that
same method was used today without using many relief
pitchers and letting pitchers get themselves out of trou-
ble, there would be bound to be more wins recorded by
some a hurlers.
Sure, some of the games now saved by the firemen
from the bullpen would likely be lost by the starter, but,
there‘are some that he would go on to win.
Of the 11 other pitchers in this special category on-
ly Walter Johnson and Grover Cleveland Alexander pit-
ched as late as the 1920's when Babe Ruth brought
power to the game and the livelier ball came into being.
One of the reasons Gaylord Perry has been able to
reach the 300 win plateau may be his widely suspected
use of a spitball.
Perry confessed to salvaging his career by resor-
ting to the greaser in a book published several years
ago but insisted he had reformed and that his sharp
dropping delivery was actually a forkball.
If that is true and he hasn't thrown a spitter or a doc-
tored -up ball in years he has done little to dispel that
notion in the heads of batters and probably has used this
psychologically.
Over the years ball players have searched for gim-
micks which would give them edge even if it may only
be pyschological and the spitball is one of them.
Only a couple of years ago Perry gave umpires a
20 minute demonstration to verify the effectiveness of
his bone-dry forkball. The only comment from one of
the umpires was "One helluva pitcher".
One of the first ball players trying to get an edge
on the opposition was the great Ty Cobb and did that
literally by sharpening his spikes to . give second
basemen and shortstops a few fears,
Other ploys have been infield foul lines banked to keep
bunts from going foul, the phantom tag of second base
on a double play, sign stealing, the corked bat and the
hodden ball to name only a few.
Gaylord Perry is a game competitor of the highest
degree. Some fans in Seattle's Kingdome are now wear-
ing T-shirts that say, "300 wins ain't nothing to spit at."
The accomplishment of Fergie Jenkins of record-
ed a career total of 3,000 strikeouts is also very com-
mendable. Jenkins who has seven straight 20 game vic-
tories or more with the Chicago Cubs is back with his
original team and also has a chance at that 300 win
mark.
We are not quite sure of Fergie's current career vic-
tory total is, but,it's somewhere in the area of 270.
That's not out of his reach. Go for it, Fergie.
Speaking of records, the old base stealing mark of
Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals will likely be
broken this year.
Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics stole
four bases in one game against the Detroit Tigers Sun-
day to bring his season total to 49 in the same number
of games.

Irish win over Saveway
in area fastball league
Lucan Irish dropped Exeter
Saveway • Tuesday, 9-6, in
Southwestern Fastball action.
Exeter had built up a first in-
ing 3-0 lead on Will Lamb's
lead-off triple, a walk to
Heywood and a three run
blast by Doug Todd.
The Irish came storming
back with a run in the first, all
on an error. They got one
more in the third, as Windsor
singled, was out at second as
Eveleigh reached first on a
fielder's choice. Smith singl-
ed home Eveleigh to make it
3-2.
In the fourth Lucan got to
Exeter starter Brad
Marsden, as Noyes singled,
Taylor reached on an error,
'Smith also was safe on an er-
ror, Windsor walked to load
the bases with the score tied
and one out.
Eveleigh thensingled home
two runs to bring Brian
Hodgins from the Exeter
bench to relieve Marsden.
Capitana greeted Hodgins
with another single to give the
Irish a 6-3 lead.
Exeter closed the gap in
their half of the fifth. when
Lamb singled, Heywood
singled, followed by Paul
McKnight's single to score
both runners.
In the bottom of the fifth,
the Irish plated three more
runs on Noyes' solo home run,
and doubles by Taylor and
Smith. This made it 9-5 for the
Irish.
The Exeter crew could
manage only one more run as

Lightfoot came on to relieve
Eveleigh on the Irish mound.
In the seventh Lamb was safe
on a fielding error, Heywood
doubled, then McKnight
grounded out, scoring Lamb
with the final run to give the
Irish the 9-6 win.
Marsden took the loss with
relief from Hodgins. The pair
gave up eighthits, struck out
four and walked one. For the
Irish'Eveleigh was the winner
with . relief help from
Lightfoot. They allowed six
hits, struck out six and issued
six walks.
Leading Lucan at the plate
was Noyes with a homer and
a single. Doubles to Taylor
and Smith and singles to
Capitana, Smith, Windsor,
and Eveleigh rounded out the
Lucan attack.
For Exeter, Lamb had a tri -

Jack Mills, Glen Mock, Al

Jim Butcher, Wayne,

were Mery Batkin 22, Bill

unna came back to beat Ex-
eter 15-3 and Blenheim 8-2 to
take the "B" crown.
In their other game, the Ex-
eter bantams were on the
short end of a 7-4 score to
Tillsonburg.
Dashwood, the other area
team in the competition lost
two close games. They were
beaten 2-1 by Wheatley and
3-0 by Blenheim.
In the loss to Corunna,
George Pratt, Steve Gould
and Scott Bogart scored the
Exeter runs with" Rick
Gilfillan's double being the
big hit.
Exeter's four runs in the 7-4
loss to Tillsonburg came as
Rick. Gilfillan singled and
scored in the fourth, Scott
Lovie homered in the sixth
and Lovie and Jeff Pfaff
crossed the plate in the
seventh.
In Dashwood's 3-1 loss to
Blenheim, Schade scored the
only run after walking and
stealing second.
Centennials take
over first place
brilliantly in supporting the
fullbacks and backing the at-
tack forwards Shawn Rot-
teau, John Muller, Paul and
Jerry Vandewalle.
Just before the half ended
Alfonse Weersink, Exeter's
centre -half worked his way in
front of the net where a long
shot to the lower corner fool-
ed the Taxandria goalie.
In the second half Exeter
pressed hard with Shawn Rot-
teau, Paul Vandewalle and
Dick Lord all hitting
crossbars. Exeter couldn't
score until Jerry Vandewalle
took a long shot from his right
wing position that fooled the
Taxandria goalie by catching
the.far corner.
The only regret was that
Exeter had only eleven
players out meaning no
spares and some of the
players had to play hurt. Half
Rob Weersink hurt his ankle
putting Exeter down to 10
players. The Exeter team
with a man short seemed to
play even better. The strong
asset of the Exeter club
seems to be.their team play
and ability to cover up for one
another.
Exeter now has a league
record of 3-1 and 4-1-1 with
Exhibition play. The league is
very competitive this year
with very few points
separating first and last
place.
Next game is in Exeter Sun-
day at 2 p.m. against West
Williams.
Exeter Centennials took
over first place in the Ausable
soccer league Sunday by
defeating the league leading
Taxandria Falcons 2-1.
Exeter did what it never
could do last year, come from
behind and win. Mike Klyne
of Taxandria scored the first
goal that beat Exeter goalie
Blair Burbidge. Blair played
brilliantly in the goal for Ex-
eter with strong support from
his fullbacks Bill White, John
Rasenberg and the ever stur-
dy Joe Laurie who probably
played his best game of the
year to date.
Halves Dick Lord, Alfonse
and Rob Weersink played
ple and a single, Heywood a
double and a single, Todd a
homer, with McKnight collec-
ting the lone single.
Exeter Saveway raised
their record to five wins and
three losses with an 8-5 vic-
tory over Bryanston, Monday
night. The short-handed Ex-
eter squad, with coach Fred
Cook in right field, collected
eight hits off two Bryanston
pitchers.
Gary MacMaster, Doug
Pearson, and Rob Snell each
had a single with Snell also
collecting a double. Paul
McKnight blasted out a triple
and a double, with Doug Todd
adding a triple and John
Gillespie a bases loaded
double.
Bryanston's inexperienced
team managed to get seven
hits off Brian Hodgins as their
eighth and ninth place hitters
each had two hits, but the top
four hitters couldn't produce
any offence as Hodgins pitch-
ed a little stronger with run-
ners on base.
He got seven batters on
strikes and walked three to
get his second win of the
season. Bryanston pitchers
struck ,out four and walked
three hi a losing cause.
Exeter has to travel to
Poplar Hill Tuesday of this
week while playing a rained
out game from Thursday
against West Corners, this
Thursday at 9 p.m. They are
also at home Sunday with the
Lieury seniors in town (game
tithe possibly 7:30 p.m. ).

one home run per game.
