Seek entries
for parade
When most Exeter mer-
chants arrived at their stores
Tuesday morning they were
confronted with notices taped
to their doors.
However. they were not
foreclost.re notices. They
were pleas from Don Haines,
chairman of the parade com-
mittee for Exeter's Heritage
Days soliciting entries for a
parade planned for the event.
Haines said he is looking for
floats pertaining to the area's
heritage, antique cars, bands,
horses "or really anything
you would like to enter with a
heritage theme."
The popular Seaforth High
School band will be in atten-
dance for the parade, which is
planned for Saturday, July 17.
People interested in enter-
ing floats, or knowing so-
meone who may be, are ask-
ed to contact Haines at

tendance. The opening Ode
was sung and Mary Stewart
Collect repeated to open the
meeting. A suitable poem
"Don't hurry" was read by
Mrs. Gordon McNaughton,
convener for Agriculture and
Canadian Industries.
President, Mrs. Chas.
Harmer, .welcomed the
visitors from our sister in-
stitutes, Beechwood, Lucan
and Clandeboye. The roll call
was, A courtesy I enjoy, to
which the visitors replied with
some interesting courtesies
as did our members. There
were excellent _ food
demonstration posters on
display.
The motto, A little of the oil
of courtesy will save a lot of
friction, was given by the con-
vener. Everyone joined in the
singing of McNamara's
Gang, to focus on this year's
plowing match.
Mrs. Currie introduced the
speaker for the afternoon,
Mrs. (Eric). Betty Ann
Mollard, Cloverdale W.I., who.
gave us a good description of
what attractions will be seen
at the Plowing Match. It cer-
tainly looks like a busy and in-
teresting time from
September 28 to October 2.
Mrs. George thanked Betty
Ann for a most informative
talk and presented a gift to
her.
Mrs. McNaughton read a
humorous poem prepared by
Mrs. Bill Sutherland entitled
"A Farmer" from which we
all got a few good laughs.

.ed with the singing of the
Queen and Grace followed by
a delicious lunch served by
Mrs. I. McAlpine's commit-

Get turtles ready
The turtles will lumber out
of the starting gates again at
Ailsa Craig's Gala Days
festivities this year, but there
will be more special events.
than ever to entertain what
organizers of the events
believe will be the biggest
weekend crowd ever.
Organization of the special
event planned for July 17 and
18 has been underway for
months, and at a meeting this
week Gala Days chairman
Ted Van Weert announced
some of the new events to be
staged this year.
Assisting the traditional
Grand Marshal and his wife,
with Gala Days ceremonies
this year will be Miss Gala
Days, a 16 to 21 year old lady
from the Ailsa Craig area to
be crowned the weekend
before Gala Days open.
Van Weert said deliniation
of the "Ailsa Craig area"
would be announced May 27,
and candidates would be
judged on their personality,
poise and a speech to be given
to a,panel of judges.
Another new event at Gala
Days is a baby contest, and
rules for that will be made
public within the next several
weeks. Also to be announced
are details of a talent show,
live theatre, carnival, flea
market and bake sale, and
other events designed to at-
tract special interest group
participation and attendance.
The 10 -kilometre road race
to Nairn and back, the
barbecues, the breakfast, and
popular main street bed race
and parade will again be held,
prizes and times to be
announced.
And the traditional stars of
the weekend - the painstak-
ingly - trained racing turtles
- will hold the attention of
Gala Days attendance on
Saturday and Sunday, times
and prizes still to be
announced.
"Now is when people should
be starting to train their
turtles," Van Weert said.
"We're expecting record
crowds at this year's races.
and competition will be stiffer
than ever. It's going to take a
fast turtle to head the pack
this year, and training will
show up out there on the
course."
Call Ted Van Weert 293-3625
for further information.
