These aspects are all true and perhaps the magazine tax is just the straw that overtax- ed this camel's back. It is also one of those asinine government moves that creates little revenue for "them" and lots of hassles for "us" The tax is on magazines selectively and God and the finance minister are the only ones who know which'. The government and the rest of us are now stuck with defining a magazine and figuring out whether or not it is to be' taxed: It used to be that there were no taxes on necessities, but lukuries were taxed. So does this mean that magazines on necessities like home and car repairs are not taxed? (Since the govern- ment .at the helm of our country has made it such that you can't afford to hire someone to do the work for you --and come to think of it, if you could afford someone, there are none available, most are broke from govern- ment attacks on small businesses). ., In the states, soft -core por- no magazines have to have socially redeeming aspects, which is why most magazines combine political head- hunting with their naked ladies, If to avoid the Ontario Taxes the magazine has to show some necessity, will we see Miss July next to an arti- cle on how to fine-tune a Toyota? Or Miss Aluminum Siding Installation of 1982? What is a magazine anyway? Will we pay tax on 'the Friday newspapers which You join the society and get a free magazine. What I expect to see is more people buying magazines through subscriptions,. (Which has its own connota- tions since this would further damage small businesses selling publications, and direct the money spent on seven percent sales tax to Canada Posta ) There ' is also the possibilities of joining a lot more clubs such as the Na- tional Geographic society. the cow escapes) I must agree with NDP Bob Rae. -You can't shave, shower or sneeze in Ontario without be- ing taxed. I guess I can't complain too much about taxes. 3 just received my tax return and found that with averaging ap- plied, I get.backa bunch more than I'd anticipated.
