Chamber busy with fest
and 'Sandcastle' theme
Grand Bend and . area
Chamber of Commerce held
a . busy meeting Tuesday
night, finalizing plans for the
annual Burgerfest,' working
on the newly conceived
'Sandcastle' theme for the
village-1;.nd making plans for
a sand castle competition.
The 30 members present
also heard that the
provincial grant for the
information booth would
allow the hiring of one junior
employee this year (as
opposed to 2 seniors last
year) and that the federal
government would support,
financially, any activity to
celebrate Canada Day.
The annual Burgerfest,
slated this year for the June.
19 weekend, will feature the
usual burgers and beer in a
tent on the beach. Helicopter
rides from the beach will be
featured and the Labatts
balloon is expected.
Again the bed race will be
organized and the group is
hoping to add a waiters' race
to the festivities. Chamber
member Brad Page has
arranged for the rock band
Raisin' !Cane to be on hand.
Then on Sunday, summer
resident of Grand Bend,
Jo. Penny and her troupe of
beauties from Toronto will be
in attendance for the beauty
pageant.
Other business for the
meeting, held at Sander's
Tavern, included welcoming
new members to the group.
They are Sands of Thyme
Antiques, William Oliver
Construction, Rock Glenn
Family Camp, Young
Classic Beauty Salon, Willert
T.V. and Hendrich
Insurance. The membership
now stands at 56.

Plans underway
for GB day camp
Recreation committee
chairlady Jean Gibson is
completing plans for the 1982
Buzy Bee Day Camp for
children ages three to eleven
in Grand Bend. Supervisors
have been hired, it was
reported at a meeting of the
Grand Bend Recreation Com-
mittee held last week in the
village council chambers.
Supervisors for the camp
this year will be Aline
Bielowski, senior, -and Nancy
Short, junior.
The camp will be opera-
tional the first week in July
and will work from the Eilber
Street parkette. It is subsidiz-
ed by the village and by pro-
vincial grants and is free for
children from ages three to
11.
Last year there were 20 to
25 children daily at the camp.
There was a day trip once a
week to view local activities
and a sleep -out at Pinery Pro-
vincial Park.
The Committee has receiv-
ed a grant of $366.00 from the
provincial ministry of culture
and recreation for a projector
and screen to be used by com-
munity groups. The screen
will be permanently mounted
in ' the village council
chambers. The total cost will
be about $800.00.
An evening for the
demonstration and use of the
equipment is planned for
September. Representatives
of community groups will be
invited to view theequipment
and learn how to use it.
In the meantime, Mrs. Gib-
son says that some policies
will be established by Com-
mittee for use and
maintenance of the
equipment.
trees.
An invitation to those in
charge of the Busy Bee Day
Camp was extended for the
next Chamber meeting to be
held at Pineridge Zoo June 1.
Competitions
for sand castle
A sand castle building
competition is scheduled to
be held on the main beach at
Grand Bend August 21, and
according to chairman
Laurie Mannell, the com-
munity is becoming very
enthusiastic.
The idea of promoting a
'Sandcastle' theme for the
village came from the local
Chamber of Commerce after
casting around for an ap-
propriate theme -focus for
the village to promote
tourism.
"One thing we have in
Grand Bend is sand, and the
best there is," said Mannell,
"and the Chamber went on
from there."
"We're just beginning to
plan but I can tell you it will
be a fun -orientated family
day with as many local,
organizations and businesses
involved as possible.
Response -has been great!"
Another sand castle
building competition is a
yearly event at White Rock,
B.C. This event draws'up to
100,000 persons.. Up to 20
persons form teams for. the
event. The Grand Bend
committee has decided to
keep teams to five persons.
