Saveway drops pair of
After winning their first two
games of the season, the Ex-
eter Saveway team dropped
two close decisions in
Southwestern fastball play
this week: Exeter had
defeated West Corners 8-4
Tuesday, only to lose 4-3 to the
Lucan Astros Friday and by
the same 4-3 score to Nairn on
Sunday.
In Tuesday's action, the
long ball proved effective as
the locals plated eight runs off
Bill Hodgins of West Corners
with two home runs by Doug
Pearson and one homer and a
single by Doug Todd.
Paul McKnight collected a
triple and a single with other
singles going to Dans
Heywood, Rab Snell and Gary
McMaster.
For West Corners, nine
singles were all they could get
off Exeter hurler Brad
Marsden, who walked three
and struck out six in gaining
the win.
Against the Astros Friday,
revenge was all that the
Lucan crew could hope for, as
Exeter built up an early 3-0
lead on run scoring singles by
Doug Todd, Dan Heywood
and Rob Snell.
In their half ofthe fourth,
the Astros came to life, scor-
ing twice on back-to-back
singles by Rick Freeman and
Porter and some wild pitches
by Exeter's Doug Todd. In the
fifth, Scott McNair drove in
the tying run with a fly ball,
after Hartman had singled.
For the second consecutive
Friday night, action in the
late innings was the highlight
of the night,' as the Astros
scored the winning run in the
bottom of the seventh inning.
Dean Densmore lead off with
a single, followed by a single
by Paul Medd, then an inten-
tional walk to McNair loaded
the bases with only one out.
Pearce best
at Ironwood
In Tuesday's regular play
of the Ironwood golf club with
77 members participating
Steve Pearce carded the low
gross score in the "A" flight
with a 36. Keith Ahrens with
a 32 was the low net scorer.
In "B" flight, John Van
Bakel notched the low.gross
score of 41 followed very
closely at 42 by Lorne
Kleinstiver . Best in low net
with 34 each were Jack Fuller
and Ken Bowen.
Dennis Rowe and Bill
Hodge each fired,43's to take
low gross honours in "C"
flight and Luc Gagnon and
Bob Forrest shared low net
honours at 34.
Mike Anstett led the "D"
flight low gross scores with a
46. Next was Alf Smith at 49.
Gary Dolphin was the low net
winner at 31 followed by Ivan
Luther with a 33.
Jim Campbell won the prize
for being closet to the hole.
His shot was only 1.17 metres
from the cup.
With Wrath at the plate,
another wild pitch brought
bensmore racing home with
the winner.
Doug Todd took the loss in
giving up seven hits, three
walks, and striking out three.
Paul Wraith, in relief of Rick
Freeman, gained the win. The
two gave up six hits, walked
six and struck out two.
Will Lamb led all hitters
with two triples, while Dan
Heywood had a double. Ex-
eter singles went to
McKnight, Todd, and Snell.
Wood lead the Astro attack
with a double, with singles to
McNair, Freeman, Porter,
Densmore, Hartman and
Medd.
Sunday night in Nairn, the
Exeter bats were alive, but
Nairn's defence held the
locals scoreless until the
sixth, when singles by
McMaster and Lamb put run-
ners on second and third with
none out.
Sacrifice flies by Todd and
Pearson closed the gap to 3-2.
In the seventh, doubles by
Gillespie and Marsden plated
another run to make it 4-3 but
Nairn held off and left the ty-
ing run at third.
Nairn's scoring came one at
a time as Schlegel homered in
the first, Watson doubled in
the third, and scored on an er-
ror on the same hit, then Ropp
homered in the fifth. After
Exeter had made the score
3-2, Walker singled in the
sixth, and scored the winner
on a ,,-fielding error on
