Sorority plans35tllTbirthday event
From a group of friends
who got together once a week
to sit and knit or just chat,
grew one of Exeter's most
thriving social service
organizations - the Ontario
Alpha Pi Chapter of the Inter-
national sorority, Beta Sigma
Phi.
Thirty-five years ago, in
1947, Irene Beaupre, whose
father owned the store at the
north end of Exeter, persuad-
ed her friends to organize
themselves under Beta Sigma
Phi to which she had belong-
ed in Washington when she
worked there during the Se-
cond World War.
Although there is emphasis
placed on cultural and social
activities, the mainthrust of
the sorority is in its social
service. Right from the begin-
ning, the 26 active members
of Alpha Pi started to work
for the betterment of the
community.
In 1970 the membership.
became so large an exemplar
chapter, Xi Gamma Nu
Chapter was formed and
again in 1977 a preceptor
chapter, Beta Theta Chapter
was organized. Today the
membership of the three
chapters, totals 60 active 1
women.
