Sports Saveway beats Astros in district f Spotlight Th By Ross Haugh Off to a -good start Without a strike this year it appears as league baseball will be enjoying a very s season. Through the month of April despite unusually cool weather in many of the northern area parks, attendance was very gratifying with more than five million spectators. We mentioned last week that the Toronto Blue Jays may not be too far up in the standings, but, they would be presenting a more exciting brand of ball for their faithful customers. Anyone watching the Jays on television Wednesday night from Chicago would have to agree. New manager Bobby Cox is making better use of his speed players' especially m bunting and baserunning with more dar- ing tactics. It was actually funny when Alfredo Griffin came to bat in the mid -innings and Tony Kubek said Griffin is a good bunter and he hasn't tried much this year. On the very next pitch Griffin laid down a perfect bunt and beat it out for a base hit. The Jays are also much better defensively. Take the case where Jesse Barfield, the Toronto right fielder threw a Chicago runner out trying to go from first to third base on a single and again when speedy Ron if major uccessful LeFiore was picked off first base. Talking of speed, the Jays traded away one • lesser gazelles with John Maybeery going Yankees for Dave Revering and Jeff Reynolds • It's interesting to see Mayberry go to the Ya be likely used mainly as a designated hitter at when Oscar Gamble who has been used in tha complaining he hasn't been seeing enough acti Yankee owner George Steinbrenner has the faculty of keeping his players unhappy and this like another step in the right direction of adding priced performer to a lineup already loaded with price talent. The Jays appear to be getting the best of the in more ways than on. Financially they are a as they trade Mayberry's $800,000 a year contra Revering's reported to be about $25o,000. Mayberry certainly has the pulling power needed to reach the_ shorter right field fences at Yankee Stadiuin and could certainly help the New York club. In getting Jeff Reynolds the Blue'Jays are looking to the future to fill their needs at third base. Reynolds is touted as an exceptional major league prospect, but, is probably at least two years away. Cox needs more immediate help at the hot corner. Now he is platooning Wayne Nordhagen and Garth Iorg at that spot, but, neither is more than a journeyman. perforMex. of their to the e 1982 Southwestern with Exeter taking home an lone rim Seemed to be all that fastball league season8-inning 3 to 2 victory. the Exeter crew needed as Exeter opened the scoring the Astros failed to put an in the 4th, when -Paul attack together until the 7th McKnight walked, , went to Inning. 3rd on a single by Doug Todd Shawn Porter lead off the and scored on a sacrflce fly 7th with a single, went to End by Gary McMaster. We expect to be in Toronto to catch the third game of the Chicago series tonight, Wednesday and hope Jays can still the hot White Sox bats. The new owners of the White Sox went on a spe ding spree last year and it appears to be paying o They quickly knocked off the Detroit Tigers three tim over the weekend and used' the home run ball to turn the trick. Ron LeFlore came home to haunt his old Detroit mates Friday night when he stole three bases and con- tributed largely to the Chicago victory. Greg Luzinski has been swinging a big bat for the White Sox helping them to a first place lead in Ihe western division of the American league. In Sunday's game against Detroit, Chicago manager Tony LaRussa practiced what he preaches. LaRussa a lawyer by trade and an advocator of law and order put plenty' of law into his order. Starting for Chicago Sunday were Rudy Law and Vince Law: The Montreal Expos are another team having a lot of problems in the early going: The Expos wilted over the weekend and were beaten four times by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Dissention appears to be one of the problems be- ing encountered by manager Jim Fanning. When veteran infielder Rodney Scott was released on the weekend, pitcher Bill Lee went into a snit and decided to visit a nearby Montreal tavern during the game. Fanning was little upset that one of the pitchers would leave with a game in progress and promptly put Lee on waivers. Lee is known for a rather stormy past including several escapades with the Boston Red Sox. Except for Gary Carter the Expos have been get- ting very little hitting power and their pitching has not been holding up very well. In a recent game, Carter hit two home runs and that's all the runs the Expos could manage. s Friday night Final playoffs in the Exeter mixed dart league will be held Friday ,nightwith four clubs battling for the grand championship and the same amount trying to take the consolation title. 'Still in contention for the overall playoff title are the Itchy Niters, CB'ers, Sassenaehs and Scotties.
