Dear Mom
This is your number two
daughter checking in to wish
you a Happy Mother's Day. I
know it's the week after
Mother's Day, but you of all
people should know I'm
always late.
You remember me. I was
the baby born the year your
hair started turning grey.
I was the baby with the
powerful lungs and the deep
hatred for milk.
I was the kid you kept
warning: "If you keep
turning your nose up at your
food, it'll stay that way!"
I was the kid who could
play On the Stop of Old
Smokey on the organ nine
times without stopping.
I was the one who com-
plained I couldn't get to sleep
because the tv was too loud,
even though my bedroom
was upstairs and on the other
side of the house.
I was the one who wrote
messages on slips of paper
and threw them down to the •
kitchen through the pipe hole
in my bedroom floor.
I was the one who could
smell homemade clnnamoa
buns baking ten miles away.

adding almost as many
miles to your nervous
system.

Beatles, Monkees and
Rolling Stones.

CELEBRATE 50 YEARS — Mr. and Mrs. Tom Desjardine
celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary Sunday,
May 2nd with an Open House at their home in Grand
Bend. A dinner was given in their honour by their family
at their daughter's home in Grand Bend with 40 guests
attending. Mr. and Mrs. • Desjardine have five
daughters, 13 grandchildren and two great

Smokers' infants
prone to problems.
Children of women who
smoke as little as one
package of cigarettes a day
during pregnancy have
increased risks of breathing
problems at birth and future
disabilities, a researcher
says.
A University of Michigan
Medical Centre study
showed women who smoked
three packages of cigarettes
a' day were four times as
likely as nonsmoking women
to give birth to a baby with a
low Apgar score, which
measures how well the
heart, lungs and nervous
system are functioning on a
scale from one to 10, said Dr.
Michael Johnston.
The routine tests are given
shortly after birth.
"Normally, an Apgar
;core of five or less means
the chances are a child
would be receiving active
cardiopulmonary resusci-
tation in the delivery room,"
Dr. Johnston said.
"They may not be
breathing normally, and that
may have an impact on later
development."
Dr. Johnston, a pediatric
neurologist, said previous
research already has linked
low Apgar scores with in-
creased risk of disorders
such as cerebral palsy and
mental retardation.
Dr: Johnston and other
members of a research team
conducted the study from a
sampling of 43,492 newborns.
