Quote. for this Saturday, May 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. The residents always look forward to these events, and of course, the auxiliary welcomes your presence as well. Any donations of baking will be very much appreciated. Congratulations are in order for Mr. and Mrs. William Sillery , who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary here at the home on Friday. A number of their friends. and relatives called to offer their congratulations and share their cake and chat over a cup of tea. While you are houseclean- ing, if you find bits and pieces of narrow ribbon or seam bin- • ding, we would appreciate donations for the hobby shop. The residents look ftrward to the visits of Mr. and Mrs. Mark. Chalut who voluntder their time one afternoon a week to chat and play games with them. On Thursday afternoon, the residents enjoyed a bus tour of the Bayfield -Varna area. Bingo was played on Friday evening followed by refreshments. The sympathy of residents and staff is extended to the family of the late Mrs. Doris Alexander. The Sunday evening chapel service was conducted by Rev. Brian Elder . of the Crediton United Church. Since our neighbourhood already had a papet'boy and being in the suburbs, there were enough kids in each family to cut lawns, I decided A° try and flog T -V Guide door-to-door. I don't remember much about the statistics of the distribution, other than I couldn't round up enough subscribers to make a route worthwhile. I seem to remember though that the cover price was about 15 cents and with just a few subscribers, a little kid could establish a candy bar empire the envy of any public school. I was in for a shock Monday when, with cable freshly hooked up, I rushed out to buy a copy of the magazine. After paying the man '25 to splice one wire and tighten two screws, I guess I can't kick at 75 cents to find out what's on. . But in an unexpected twist of dramatic ircny or cosmic justice, the T-Vpoppeda tube We can now listen to 11 dif- ferent channels. * ** When reading the newspapers these days or listening to the news I get the feeling the world is on some kindof lunatic rollercoaster ride. On the whole, it is rather .amusing to see who will do what next and to whom. If the current economic and political situation weren't so dangerous - let's face it we're on the brink of a major war for a variety of causes - we could sit back and giggle at the idiocy of world leaders. A half page ad in Monday's Globe shows a swirl of soapy water going down the drain. The sponsor, *icor, goes on to explain that "waste" water can be pumped down into oil wells to draw more oil to the surface. It is a par- ticularly bad graphic for this company. It brings to mind the fate of the $150 million invested in the tar -sands project and the money the province invested in Suncor itself. The money, like the water inSuncor's pic- ture, is down the drain. Since the population of Canada is about 24 million, distributing this money would have given each and every Canadian over four million dollars. Next time the government tries,to embark on a plan of this size I suggest.they cancel the project and hand out the cash. I know four million would effectively insulate me from the high price of oil and the ravages of recession.
