Spotlight
By Ross Haugh

In last week's issue a story was carried on the
sports pages about Willow Wiper setting a record on a
half mile track with a mark of 1.57.3. Now we have
learned that the four year-old pacer owned by Bob
Hamather of Zurich and trained by Jim Morrissey of
Crediton covered the two laps of a half mile track at
Freehold m New Jersey in just one tick over one minute
and 55 seconds.
Anyone with any racing knowledge knows that is
a super fast time. It's a record for four year-old pacers
on a half mile track.
When Niatross was a three year-old he Won both
heats of the Little Brown Jug in 1.54.4 and 1.55 and a
pacer called-Bandalier went in 1,55.
Willow Wiper, the son of Windshield Wiper has
already amassed earnings this year of 125,000 and at
the rate he is going now will up that mark considerably.
The training methods used by Jim Morrissey must
certainly be the right ones and it doesn't seem to mat-
ter which driver is in the sulky.
Willow Wiper won consistently at Greenwood with
Steve Condren on the bike and then the two big wins in
the States were accomplished with Ray MacLean and
John Campbell doing the steering. It was MacLean that
said, "Just like driving a Cadillac.
Area bowl off
For the third year, there will be a round robin
playoff for minor bowling teams in the area.
Three bantam and three junior teams from each of
Exeter, Lucan and Zurich will be meeting in the three -
stage bowloff with total pinfall counting.
The bowling will start May 3 in Lucan, continue
May 10 in Zurich and wind up in Exeter on Monday, May
17. Each team will bowl two games beginning at 7 p.m.
In addition to team trophies a boy and a girl in each
group will receive an individual trophy for throwing the
highest single and double scores.
The way the youngsters continue to chalk up high
scores in minor bowling there should be lots of competi-
tion in the men's and ladies leagues in a few years.
In checking the scores at the recent minor bowling
banquet we found some interesting scores. In junior.
ranks Scott Bierling has a single score of 238 and Mike
Kingma recorded a 341 double and Judy Isaac a 283
double.
In the senior category Sheri Varleychalked up a
207 single and Denise Denomme was tops with a 353
double.
Moving to teenagers Terry Meikle tossed a 204
single which was topped byBonnie Kooy at 222. The high
doubles were Bill McDonad 496 and Diane Warwick 403.
Much improved
It may not show much yet in the eastern division
standings of the American baseball league, but, the
Toronto Blue Jays are a much improved club.
Only a couple of minutes of watching the Jays in
action will show that they are°improved in attitude,
desire, aggressiveness, speed and in all round
performance. •
The main -reason for this can beattributed to new
manager Bobby Cox. After a number of years at the
helm of the Atlanta Braves Cox brings a vast amount
of experience and patience to Toronto.
Theaggressivenessstartswith Cox himself: He is a
strict advocate of platooning and this covers batting,
fielding and base running.
In Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Texas Rangers Cox
used every one of his players excluding pitchers and
was very successful with four pinch hits and two
strategic changes in base runners that forced the Texas
defence to take a different stand and the Blue Jays were
able to take advantage of it.
They may not be nearthetop when the season is
over, but, one thing is for sure Toronto fans will get their
money's worth in action if Cox is able to continue with
his present,style of play.
The style of play used by Cox is also good for every
member of the team. They know that even if they don't
get into the starting lineup, they could be inserted at
any time and must be ready to go when called on.
It appears that only shortstop Alfredo Griffin, cen-
tre fielder Lloyd Moseby and second baseman Damasso
Garcia are the only Blue Jays that can count on being
in the starting lineup day after day.
In all other spots Cox can go with a right or left
handed hitter depending on the pitcher on the opposing
mound.
The key spots are catching where Ernie Whitt and
Buck Martinez can trade off and at first base with John
Mayberry, but, the veteran can come through with the
long ball as he demonstrated recently with two home
runs in one game. ,
All the Jays really need to be a serious contender
are two good starting pitchers, a solid third baseman
and probably a consistent designated hitter.
Cox has been getting great response from his pinch
hitters when called on, but, not too much from the
designated hitters on a regular basis.
While the New York Yankees may be loaded with
stars that pull down big pay checks, we heard one of
their advance scouts Birdie Tebbetts say that he would
like to have some of the speed and desire of the young
Blue Jays on his side. Tebbetts who was a Detroit Tiger
catcher many years ago added, "The Blue Jays will be
heard from in the not too distant future."
