Runnerups in contest In January a contest was sponsored by the provident Library Associates Network in United States and Canada. Library users, children, were invited to write a paragraph or more in con- nection with a given list of books as follows: "suppose you could spend a weekend with any of the characters in 'any of the listed books. Write a paragraph (or more) telling whom you would choose and explain why." Four prize winners were chosen, one of whom was from Canada and Tabatha Froats 10, of Lucan United Church Sunday School was the first runner-up receiving a copy of "The King's Book" by Louise Vernon. Congratulations Tabatha. Crewel display is. worthwhile . It is well worth a walk up town to see the display of Crewel Embroidery and quilted articles in the win- dow at the Young's Clothing and Drygoods store. These articles were completed by members of the last two local leaders short courses sponsored by the Lucan Women's Institute, which also spon- sors three local 4-H Homemakers Clubs. Thanks to Marlyne McFalls for helping publicize the work of the Institute. Joyous val day was ntaj Baismand the Eucharist, Edward Robert Chatterson, infant son of Linda and Dave Chatterson, was baptized and received into the congregation of Christ's Church. The Senior Choir sang two beautiful anthems - "The EasterAnthems" and "Christ the Lord is Risen Today". The Old and New Testament lessons were read by Jim Shipley. The Homily given by Rev. Pocock was based on the symbol of light. The paschal candle lit represents "The Light of Christ." On this most Holy day when ow Lord Jesus passed from death to life, He brought a new sense of light into our lives. The Light (Jesus Christ) has come back into our world overcoming the darkness (sin). He brings us freedom and the blessed hope of life everlasting and grace for living now. Easter lilies in the Church were given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. D. Hodgins, Phyllis, Richard and Edith by Amy Hodgins and in loving memory of Mr. Roy Hodgins, Mr. and Mrs. C. Hawkshaw and Grant by Mrs. Doris Hodgins. Also flowers in the sanc- tuary were from the funeral of our dear slater in Christ, Muriel Corbett, our sym- pathy and prayers go out to her family. McRobert presided and opeped the meeting with lesson thoughts on the Pass Over. Several items of business were discussed and taken care of: the catering of a beef dinner for the Friend- ship Circle of St. Marys, May 4 was accepted by this Unit. The program for the general meeting for which Unit 1 is responsible, will take the form of a birthday party as the UCW will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of it's inauguration. Mrs. G. HAROLD DAVIS The rite of confirmation and communion were celebrated at Kirkton United Church on Easter Sunday by the minister of the church Reverend Ralph King. Organist is Mrs. Earl Stephen. The Junior choir sang with soloist Marie Stephen and Ron Brookshaw. The Senior choir also rendered an anthem. Received into the family fellowship by transfer were Mr. and Mrs. Paul McNaughton and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Traut. Woamam By MISS JEAN COPELAND • The Easter meeting of the Woodham U.C.W. was held in the Church on April 7th with Thames Road, Elimville and Zion West ladies as our guests. The Executive were in charge of the evening with Mrs. John Rodd and Mrs. Witham Spence conducting the Worship service. Call to Worship was given by Mrs. John Rodd. Scripture was given by Mrs. William Spence. Mrs. John Rodd read a story followed by a poem by Mrs. William Spence. Mrs. Glenn Copeland and Mrs. Ted Insley then favoured with two piano duets. Mrs. Copeland in- troduced our guest speaker Mrs. Stuart Shier who show- ed pictures and told of her trip to Israel and Egypt, she was thanked by Mrs. Dave Williams and presented with a gift. The business was then con- ducted by Mrs. Copeland, everyone was reminded of the Special Event Meeting in Mitchell Tuesday evening April 13. Easter Sunday service was held at eleven o'clock at St. Paul's Anglican Church. During the eucharist Mrs. Garth Blackler sang a solo. Misses Sharon Doupe and Maureen Blackler were inducted as servers in the church by Reverend Greg Smith. An Easter Lily was given in loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Smith and Douglas by their family. Mr. and Mrs. Harold DAVIS visited Good Friday with Mrs. Art Hodgins at Clan- deboye. Elwood Morden. A presentation entitled "The sign of cross and What does it mean to you," was per- formed by this group, with the members at large joining with the singing of the hymns. At the conclusion of the program, Mrs. Robt Hardie on behalf of Unit 1 offered her appreciation to the visitors, for helping to make the meeting a memorable one. Mrs. C. McRobert and Mrs. E. Mrs. Joan McCormick accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Bernard McCormick, Erin and Meaghan of Woodham visited with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Veel of London UCW units meet The members of Unit 3 visited the London Regional Art Gallery for the first part of their meeting. This tour was arranged by Mrs. C. Hayden and Mrs. L. Bryan. Later they returned to the home of Mrs. Bryan, where a worship service was held with a Good Friday theme. At the conclusion of the meeting hot cross buns were served by the hostess assisted by Mrs. W. Garrett and Mrs. Robt-Garrett. • Unit 4 met at the home of Mrs. Rhea Hardy. Mrs. Gary Humphrey presided and opened with the devotional part of the meeting, which was on Easter. Business items discussed included a bakeless bake sale in May. Program Conveners were Mrs. Floyd Dykes and Mrs. Tom Gagon, who used the new study book "Living between memory and hope" taking chapter 2, this was titled "The ambiguity of Power," and dealt with politics in the church. A good discussion followed. A tasty lunch of hot cross buns and jam was served by Mrs. Harold and Cliff Hardie assisted by the hostess. C.G. LT. news At their meeting on April 7, the C.G.I.T. learned about the events that took place the last week before Jesus was crucified. "The week that shook the world". It was a week that began and ended in triumph. The hosannas of Palm Sunday are recalled by the Alleluias of Easter Sunday. • The girls learned of the events between those two Sundays that made such a difference in our lives today. Each event began with a reading from the Bible, after which the members took part in the explanation either by narrating, or taking the part of the characters. During the scene of the Last Supper, the girls also shared in unleavened bread and grape juice, offered in remembrance of Jesus. ; assistance in the program. Church news The Rev. Elwood Morden The Rev. Elwood Morden was in charge of the worship conducted the "Good for the Easter Sunday Friday" evening service at Service and entitled his the United Church, with the sermon "Stones Rolled assistance of the Rev. Greg Smith rector of- St. Thomas Anglican Church. The Sacrament of Holy Com- munion was observed with the Rev. Morden officiating. In a dramatization, the story of the first Easter unfolded, with the Rev Morden and Smith reading the scripture passages and then describing the scenes. Beginning with Maundy Thursday the day before "Good Friday", the Last Supper, the betrayal of Jesus, by Judas, Peters denial, of his Master, the part of Peter was taken by John Scott. A wooden cross that had been placed at the entrance of the .church for the last week, with a crown of thorns hanging on it, and the in- scription on a board at the foot, which read, "Is It nothing to you, all you who pass by?" was carried into the church by Doug and Paul Brown. This was followed by the rest of theItt Vision story and the plagbody in the tomb. service concluded with1t n ex- planation of why thl* day is called "Good Friday." Easter Sunrise S.rvice and breakfast An Easter Sunday Sunrise Service sponsored by the Granton Youth Groups was very well attended . at the United Church beginning at 7 a.m. followed by breakfast served in both the church basement and the Mason's Hall across the street. The menu consisted of buns, muffins, home made jams, colored hard boiled eggs, tea and coffee. The combined group C.G.I.T., Explorers, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, put on a religious presentation en- titled "The Real Easter Story as told by Witnesses." This was an excellent performance with all ages taking the roles and doing them extremely well. The leaders of these groups deserve a lot of credit for their coaching and patience, they must have been very proud of their proteges on Easter Sunday morning. The costumes were quite authentic. The whole service was conducted by the members of these groups. Appreciation is extended to Miss Arden Bryan for her contribution of a violin solo "Adoration" and also to her mother Mrs. Elwyn Bryan who was the accompanist throughout the program. Thanks to Cubs Kenneth McGuffin and Bill Fox members of the Bryanston Cub Pack, for their Away." The following are some of the stones in our lives mentioned by the Minister - Stone of Darkness, the disciples were so weak before Easter, they believed only when they saw Jesus. The good news of Easter rolls back the cloud, stone of doubt, Thomas wouldn't believe. In the Resurrection Jesus overcame sin and freed us in forgiveness. Special Anthems from both choirs were enjoyed. A replica of the stone at the Tomb of Jesus was placed at the front of the church surrounded by plants of Easter Lilies. A hydrangea plant was placed in the church in memory of the late William conk by his wife and family. On Thursday evening the service .for Maundy Thur- sday was held at St. Thomas Anglican Church. The Sacraments of Holy Baptism was observed also the Institution of the Eucharist was celebrated with the Rev. Greg Smith, rector of St. Thomas as the Celebrant, assisted by John Herbert. Cynthia Merle Boroway and Wally David Egan both received the Sacrament of Baptism. The first lesson was given by Mrs. C. Lewis and the Epistle by Mrs. Lois Her- bert. Mrs. Ron Hardie, in a reading, described the ceremony of the Stripping and Washing of the Altar which was performed by Rev. Smith. On Easter Sunday the 9:30 a.m. service was conducted by the Rev. Greg Smith Rector St. Thomas Anglican Church, who was the ce« .ant of the Parish Eucharist assisted by John Herbert, when the people received Communion and the children were blessed. The first lesson was read by Betty Ann Herbert, the Epistle by the Rector. In his sermon the Rev. Smith spoke on the hap- penings and conditions in the world today. An Easter Garden of lilies and baskets of flowers adorned the back of the church. Flowers were placed in the church from the funeral of the late Kenneth Aulenbach by his family. Due to the cancellation of last Sunday's service Palm crosses blessed earlier in the week, were distributed during the processional hymn by Kayleen Roloson. Following the service a time of fellowship was en- joyed over refreshments in the Church hall. At Dashwood Times -Advocate, April 14, 19$2 Page 17 Missionary to speak Sunday By MRS. IRVIN RADER Rev. Floyd Howlett, ap- pointed as a missionary to Japan by The United Church of Canada will speak at Dashwood United Church, Sunday, April 18, at 8 p.m. In 1980, Rev. Howlett and his wife Doreen helped establish a Christian Centre as a service and training centre for the churches and people in a northern area of Japan. Part of their work con- sisted of an outreach program to the non-Christian farm community. They also carried on training for the rural Christians. Another area of their work was called Christian action and trained farm people to do research on farm problems while helping them to take action in their own community. Through the work of the Japanese churches, Mr. and Mrs. Howlett promoted study sessions in cooperation with labour unions and political parties on social issues having to do with education. In addition, Mr. Howlett served many Japanese churches, both through regular Sunday services and house churches in outlying areas. Rev. Howlett is a graduate of Victoria and Emmanuel Colleges. He is now living in Canada and is coming to Dashwood to share his ex- perience in Japan with the community. Five ladies from Zion Lutheran church attended a prayer service at Mitchell Lutheran Church March 29. They were Mrs. M. Mellecke, Mrs. Roy Gibson, Mrs. Diane Leibold, Mrs. Max Windsor and Mrs. Florence Martene. Mrs. Beulah Desjardine is a patient in University Hospital, London, where she had hip surgery. A number of Dashwood Seniors attended the Spring Rally of Zone 8 in Zurich Wednesday, April 7. Dashwood Seniors will hold the monthly meeting Monday, April 19. ' - Judith Mellecke, Ann Ar- bor, and Jonathon Mellecke, Toronto, were Easter visitors with Rev. and Mrs. Mellecke and family. Dashwood 4-H club named the "Yeaster Lilies" held a party Monday, April 5. When the girls had assembled, they had the 4-H prayer. Some of the girls brought pizzas others brought different types of bread. Janice Schade brought a salad along with dressings. After everyone had eaten all they wanted, the girls clean- ed up and giscussed the achievement,, ay exhibit. Carl Wein, of Hamner, visited with his mother, Mrs. Hilda Wein in Mississauga Hospital and spent the weekend with his sister Erma Wein here. They also visited their aunt, Mrs. Rose Laub, Exeter, who has returned home from South Huron Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Dean McKnight, Deanne and Rob- bie, Exeter, spent Easter with Florence Martene. Mayo Mellecke will be in Stillwater, Minnesota, thin week with his mother who will undergo open heart surgery. Calvary United Church women were delightfully entertained at their last meeting Thursday by a skit "The Importance of Daily Bi- ble Reading" put on by the World Outreach group. Mrs. Jean Weigand and Mrs. Irene Kennedy favoured with a duet. Easter hymns were sung. Mrs. Mildred Keller- man told the origin of the hot cross buns. Collection for the Zaire South Africa packages will be accepted the next two Sundays. A concert given by Joyce Brittain will be held Sunday, May 30 at Zurich United Church. Mr. and Mrs. Fred McIn- tyre have returned home after spending the winter in Florida. Special services were held at both the Lutheran church and Calvary United Church on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The Sunrise Service at the Lutheran church with the Youth in charge had the theme "Easter Dawns" Testimonies were given by Paul -Elise Vandeworp; Mary Magdelene - Michelle Vandeworp, Cleopas - Rachel Mellecke, a soldier - Earl Keller; Constantine - Ernest Miller; Martin Luther - Lisa Miller ; a home convert- Lori Anne Boogemans. Narrators were Mrs. Earl Keller and Sandra Datars. Organist was Elizabeth Datars. A brass or- chestra from Peace Lutheran Church Exeter, :onsisting of Peter and Mike Bornath and John and Paul Obeda, accom- panied. This was followed by breakfast. At the morning service, three .adults were made members of Zion Lutheran church through conformation. Forgiveness was the theme of the Good Friday service at Calvary United Church. The junior and senior Sunday school classes read the Scrip- tures which dealt with Jesus' words on the cross. Meditation was based on the words "Father - forgive them for they know not what they do". The elders of the church were in charge of the sunrise service. The theme - "Live a joyful life". Bill Chandler sang "The Robe of Calvary" as a solo. After the service everyone sat down to a delicious breakfast prepared and served by the Teen Group". Easter Communion was well attended. The primary and junior Sunday school sang, "Magic Penny". Rev. Barbara Laing told the Easter story to the children using overhead pictures and discussion with the children. The choir sang "Someone Arose from the Grave." Bill Chandler sang his solo on re- quest. Maida and Don Geiser assisted Rev. Laing in serving communion. WELCOME SPEAKER - - Steve Howe of CFPL Radio was the guest speaker Saturday at the Stephen Minor Hockey Association banquet.
