Area students display talent
at regional science fair event
Students from five area
schools competed Wednesday
in the first South Huron region
science fair.
There were 31 exhibits
shown in general, physical
and biological science
classes. Each exhibit had
previously placed in competi-
tions at Exeter, Zurich, Hen -
sail, Stephen Central or
.J.A.D. McCurdy Public
schools.
Projects done by the grades
six, seven and eight students
were judged by a panel of six
judges. Scientific thought ac-
counted for 45 percent of the
judging, with 25 percent for
the students' creative ability,
and 10 percent each for skill,
dramatic value and a written
report.
The grade six class • was
open as an encouragement for
younger students, while only
the first and second place ex-
hibits from the grade seven
and eight classes will go on to
compete at the Huron County
fair.
An expected 48 entries from
the four Huron County
regions will compete at Huron
Centennial school Wednes-
day, April 14. Winners from
the county meet will go on to
further competitions and
possibly compete at the
Canada Wide science fair.
Judges at the regional fair
in Exeter were: Ainsley Mar-
shall and Dennis McKnight
from Centralia College; Peter
Aunger from South .Huron
District High School; Joe
Laurie from Huron Centen-
nial School; Cam Addison
from Clinton Public School;
and Garnett Harland a
retired school principal from
Clinton.
GRADE
EIGHT GENERAL WINNER -- Jeff Maxwell of
Huron Park won the general science class for his grade
at the regional science fair. Jeff's display looked at
submarines. -
TIMELY TOPIC — Lori Hutchinson from Stephen Cen-
tral school designed her science fair displayaround the
topic Maple Syrup. Lori placed first in the grade six

Finkbeiner, Stephen, lightn-
ing; third, Jamie Beuerman,
Exeter on the human body.
Grade eight, physical: first,
Kris McAdams, Zurich,
flight; second, Scott Miller
and Mark Dillon, Stephen,
wind tunnels; third, Jackie
Costain and Tina Grubbe, Mc-
Curdy, telegraphy.
Grade eight biology: first,
Tracey Remkes and Wendy
Leishman, Exeter, blood; se-
cond, Stacey Sommerville,
McCurdy, acid rain; third,
Anne Diechert and Tanya
Forrester, Zurich, mouse and
gerbil mazes.
Grade seven general: first,
Caven women
visit in Arctic
April 12, the P.C.W. of
*Caven Presbyterian Church
held their thank offering
meeting. Mrs. Sally Laing
opened the meeting with a
reading on "Easter".
Mrs. Aileen Knight took as
her devotion, Matthew 28:
1-10 and 16-20. Her very in-
spirational talk was taken
from two words from each
verse; 5,6 and 7 - "Looking
For", "Come Back" and "He
Lives".
Mrs. Mickey Bridges in-
troduced the guest speaker,
Dave McClure, who showed
slides and explained what it is
like in ,the Arctic. He spent
three weeks, in theArctic,Iast
summer and I'm sure
everyone enojyed what Dave
had to share with us.
The Gordon Auxiliaryladies
provided music, "All 'that I
Am" and "Life In Jesus", ac-
companied by Mrs. Blanche
Dougall. •
Mrs. Dorothy Iles closed
the meeting with prayer and
the ladies served a delicious
lunch.
Seniors enjoy
music program
A meeting of Exeter senior
citizens was held April 6 with
about 40 in attendance.
Mrs. Caldwell was in the
chair for the program which
consisted of several musical
numbers by Dave and Beth
Prouty and their two
daughters and readings by
Hazel Snell and an Easter Hat
Parade.
A report from the advisory
committee was given, and
some discussion re bus trips.
A social time over the
teacups, which was served by
Hurondale W.I. closed the
meeting.

Exeter clerk given
certified designation
The International Institute
of Municipal Clerks of
Pasadena, California has
announced that Elizabeth
Bell, Clerk -Treasurer of
Exeter has been awarded the
designation of certified
municipal clerk for
achieving the high
educational, experience, and
service requirements
established by the Institute
for attainment of this honor,
Ms. Bell has been em-
ployed by the Town of Exeter
since 1973 and served as
Deputy. Clerk -Treasurer
untilposition assumingin1978. her present
She has received the
Certification of Completion
of the three-year course in
Municipal 'Administration
presented by Queen's
University in Kingston and
Fanshawe College in London
and was authorized by the
Association of Municipal
Clerks and Treasurers of
Ontario to use the
designation AMCT.
Ms. Bell is presently
Chairperson for the Huron
County Municipal Clerks and
Treasurers Association and
Director for the Huron
County Municipal Officers
