Michael Clase, 15, of
Prince of Wales collegiate,
St. John's, Newfoundland,
was the top student in this
year's Fermat contest. The
Fermat contest is part of The
Canadian Mathematics
Competition sponsored by
the faculty of mathematics,
University of Waterloo.
The Fermat contest,
named after a distinguished
seventeenth century French
mathematician, is for grade
10 and 11 students. This is the
first year the contest has
been offered under its
present name; in previous
years it was called the
Junior Mathematics Contest
and 'was designed for
students in grade 9 as well at
10 and 11. (This is the 20th
year U of W has run a
mathematics competition
for high school students.)
