Times-Advocate, 1982-04-07, Page 10Fate 10 Thnee.Advocats, April 7, 1912 441:— Sports Spotlight By Ross Haugh Ranger coach' happy Thanks to former Dashwood resident Etgin Merner we have received a clipping from the Kitchener - Waterloo Record regarding Exeter native Dave Shaw. Dave, the son of Exeter mayor Bruce Shaw and his wife Fran is having an outstanding year with the Kit- e.bener Rangers who are trying to repeat as Memorial Cup champions. The story said pro scouts are "drooling, even slob- bering over Dave Shaw and Scott Stevens, two of the best rookie defencemen the OHL has seen in a long time." In answer to the question from NHL general managers as to which player is the best, Ranger coach Joe Crozier replied, "Let me put it this way. If I had a NHL team, I'd want both of them. Really, that's about all I can say. They're both dandies and both going to go in the first round of the NHL draft this summer." Continuing assessment of , his two defencemen Crozier said, "They're both strong skaters, can shoot the puck, are aggressive and they're great kids to work with:" Specifically about Shaw, the Ranger coach con- tinues, "He has developed more slowly and didn't play very physical at the start, but, he's come along in leaps and bounds and is now very physical." Crozier paired the two rookie defencemen together during training camp and they have been together ever since. They were the only Rangers to play in all 68 league games. Each scored six goals. Stevens had 36 assists and Shaw 25. Dave Shaw will celebrate his 18th birthday on May 25. He is currently a grade 13 student at Kitchener Col- legiate Institute. We talked to Dave in. mid-February and he in- dicated at that time that he would prefer Minnesota or Pittsburgh in the NHL, but, added, "I guess I would be happy to go to any big league club." Best of luck to Dave and the rest of the Rangers as they head down the playoff trail. The toughest stumbl- ing block along the way will likely come from the Sault Ste, Marie Greyhounds. Summer sports With most hockey teams at least on the local scene on the sidelines, the spotlight will switch to more sum- mery type sports. Registrations are underway or coming up for a number of organizations. The Exeter Minor Baseball Association is continuing registrations tomorrow night Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday morning bet- ween the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 noon. . In addition to registrations Thursday night, an in- formal meeting for all juvenile and junior players in the South Huron and North Middlesex areas will be held al 7:30 to inform them of plans, schedules and special events included in a very busy and interesting summer baseball program. Those interested in playing minor lacrosse or minor ball hockey can get more information from Cam Stewardson during baseball registration hours Satur- day morning. The Exeter Minor Soccer Association has set registrations for Saturdays April 10 and 17 at the South Huron Rec Centre between the hours 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Those wishing to participate in the minor soccer program in Lucan have a chance this Saturday between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon to sign up at the Lucan arena. Cam Stewardson, assistant facilities manager at the South Huron Rec Centre is trying to introduce a new sport which is a sort of combination between hockey and soccer. It's called ball hockey and will be played on the ce- ment surface of the Rec Centre. Basic hockey rules are usedand the soccer connection comes from all the run- ning necessary. •Very little equipment is needed. One can be in business with a pair of running shoes and an ordinary hockey stick. The ball used in the game is of rubber composition, but, unlike some rubber or sponge balls does not bounce very much. . The only difference to hockey rules% that the blue line is floating. Once a team has moved the ball across the opposing blue line that line then floats hack to the centre of the playing surface and the ball may come back to that point and then shot to the goal without an offside being called. •The ball hockey season for men from the age of 17 years up would start about May 1 -and conclude at the end of August. Stewardson says from 15 to 20 players are needed for each team as it is a fairly strenuous sport. A meeting has been set for Wednesday, April 21 at 8 p.m. at the Rec Centre. Representatives from each prospective team are asked to attend. Rec director Lynne Farquhar has called a meeting for the following night, Thursday, April 22 to find out if there is enough interest to warrant setting up a ladies sio-pitch league this summer. - For this meeting to start at 7:30.p.m. any girls or young ladies interested in playing are urged to attend. Third game in lucan, Thursday Irish continue winning, beat Langton The Lucan Irish listen to rumours. For the fourth time this year, the bustling Junor 'D' team has done what experts said couldn't be done. Monday night, the Irish doubled the score 6-3 on the Langton Thunderbirds in the first game of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior 'D' finals. The Irish finished third in their own grouping and then eliminated the Tavistock Braves, Mitchell 'Hawks and Stayner Siskins to qua lifyfor the provincial final. The Lucan club ousted Stayner Thursday night with a 1-0 victory on a •goal by Kevin Hartwick after five minutes of overtime to send most of the screaming 1,250 finas home happy. Scouting reports listed the Langton club as bigger, older, physical and more balanced, but, the Irish wasted little time in disproving that theory Monday night. Thg second game was played last night. Tuesday in Lucan. The third game is again in Lucan Thursday night at 8:15 p.m. The fourth contest goes Monday night in Langton at 7:30 and a fifth if necessary Wednesday, April 14, also in Langton. If the series is. extended fur- ther, games go Friday, April 16 in Lucan and Sunday, April 18 in Langton. . The Irish scored one goal in each of the first two periods and two more early in the third to lead 4-0 before Langton hit the scoreboard. Jamie Shipley in front at 4.12 of the first period on a three-way com- bination with Paul Wraith and Keith Hartwick. Keith Hartwick upped the Irish lead to 2-0 with three minutes left in the middle frame. Steve Glenn and Jeff Shipley assisted. In the firat minute of the final period, Steve Glenn con- verted a pass from Art Gregory and less than four minutes later Doug Latta set up John Medd for the fourth Lucan goal. A Langton penalty helped set up the fifth Irish score at 16.39. Keith Hartwick was the marksman on a pass from Paul Wraith. With less than two minutes to go Geoff Edwards hit the Langton net on a pass from AN IRISH SHOT — Keith Hartwick of the Lucan Irish lets a shot goat the Stayner" net in Thursdays game won 1-0 by Lucan. Captain Paul Wraith moves in from the nearside for a possible rebound. T -A photo John Medd to clinch the victory. The Irish took eight of the 14 penalties called by referee Ivan Bryce of Watford. Each team had 33 shots on goal. Hpt goal tending The more than 1,200 fans in attendance the Lucan arena Thursday night' were treated to excellent entertainment as the Irish -won 1-0 in overtime to eliminate Stayner. While all players on both teams skated fast, executed crisp passes and hit hard it was the goalies that stole the show. Lucan netminder Dan Sceli and Mike Dineen of Stayner were equally sparkling as the Irish outshot their opposition 45 to 37. Sceli foiled three Stayner clean cut breakaways, made a phenomenal stop asDarrell Hughson .and Steve Sage broke in alone in the second period and held his ground in the dying minutes of overtime as Stayner went on a power play. At the other end, Mike Di- neen was equally as sharp. He stopped everything thrown his, was by the Irish until Kevin Hartwick scored the only goal of the game at 4.56 of overtime. As the Siskins were break- ing out of their own end, Hartwick coolly stepped in to intercept a pass and fired a low shot into the net before Dineen had a chance to move. Adding to the high quality of the game was the good per- formance turned in by referee Clarke Pollock of Kincardine. Oust Stayner in exciting fashion He let both teams play their game and handed out only 10 in final opener minor penalties. The three stars were Kevin Hartwick, Dan Scell and Mike Dineen. NO REBOUND — ,Jamie Shipley and another member of the Lucan Irish swarm around Stayner goalie Mike Dineen looking for a rebound which did not come in Thursday's "D" semi-final game won by Luton 1-9. if your car's out of shape you get rid of it, right?
