The contradiction of growing old
North Americans have two
habits that contradict each
other.
The first is our age con-
sciousness. Many go to great
lengths to conceal our real
age. Oh, we say we don't
care if people know how old
we are and it's sheer coin-
cidence that the subject
doesn't conte up very often.
We think it's coy to an-
swer, "How old do you think
I am?" when the question
does arise. And some people
take great delight in keeping

Think about the
procedures we subject
ourselves to in an effort to
keep looking young. A

when they come too fast to be
pulled out, we cover them
up. It is no longer only
women who colour their hair
for men have discovered the
subtle way of touching up the
grey. We look younger than we
are; we dress young; we act
young. We may never find
the fountain of youth, but
we'll do our darndest to look
like we have.
After a whole year of
fighting the natural ad-
vancement of the days, what
do we do? We have a big
bash to celebrate our bir-
thday.
Oh, of course, we say .we
don't want any fuss. When
you get to be our age, we
don't count birthdays
anymore. It's just another
day to. us.
But what would we do if
there was, no party? What if
there was no birthday cake?
What if there were no gifts?
What if all our friends .and
relatives forgot our bir
thday? We wouldn't speak to
them for a }'ear.Some other
cultures don't celebrate
birthdays. They know their
birthdate. They know how
old they are, and they don't
try to hide the truth. But
their birthdays come and go
without fanfare.
Why then do we age -
conscious North 'Americans
insist on an annual
celebration? Perhaps it's
just an excuse to have a
party. Or maybe we like the
chance to pamper ourselves
thinking "Oh, I'll take it easy
today. It's my birthday:" or
"I'll have thatextra piece of
cake. Who cares about the
calories? It's my birthday."
And of course, there are
ghe gifts. We say to the
ivers, "Oh; you shouldn't
have," but we're secretly
glad they did.
The two habits seem
contradictory, but after a
year of hiding our age I
guess we think we deserve a
day to flaunt it. ,

her personal relationship

ed her to more skillfully por-

Soloist Barb Triebner, ac-

sent with three inspirational
numbers.
The guest speaker for the
evening was Arch Andrew of
Bayfield. a professional
counsellor for 25 years. He
showed counselling, from a
Biblical perspective, the
purpose being to help people
understand themselves, to.
see their inadequacy and
need for God and as
Christians to "put off" the
old behavior and "put on"
the new. behavior.
This is not a matter of
"conditioned reflexes" but.
requires a conscious,
deliberate choice. He spoke
of the basic human problem
of loneliness. Loving not be
ing loved is the only solution
to this problem.
