So all the boys who signed up, and even those that didn't yet - from age 8-11 can still join. The first meeting will take place tonight, Wednesday January 27 from • 7-9 o'clock at the Public School. Also leaders and helpers are still needed. Guido, go swimming The Zurich Girl Guides went swimming at Vanastra in Clinton on Wednesday in - Istead of having their usual meeting. The girls along with leader, Sue Hartman of Hensel) and mothers, Irene Hartman and Carmel Sweeney enjoyed the change of atmosphere! March of Dimes Volunteer canvassers for the Ontario March of Dimes . Ability Fund are now out collecting in town and the country. Please give generously for the han- dicapped. Electric from Huron Park walked off with the 'A' championship and C.G. Farm Supply from Zurich captured the 'B' title. Runners up in each category were The Ten- derspot entry from Zurich and MacLeans from Exeter. The opening game of 'th tourney saw J.M.R. Electri come up with a convincing 7 3 win over C.G. Farm Supply Black Hawks. After building up a 3-1 lead by the midway mark of the second period the Black HawkS fell victim to six consecutive J.M.R. goals to salt away the victory. Greg Parsons paced the J.M.R. attack notching a hat trick while Shawn Rottean added two goals. Scoring in single fashion were Grant Love and Dennis Pfaff. Joe Kenda, Ivan Bedard and Rick Schilbe accounted for the Zurich goals. The second game was a high scoring affair which saw Seaforth Hawks hold off an attempted comeback by Don's Food Market and tally an 8-6 victory. play assisted by Ron Desjardine. e e What proved to be the winning goal was scored at the 3:05 mark of the second period by Doug Eckel with Dotig Turkehim and Tim Bedour assisting on the play. Before the second period ended MacLeans scored their only .goal of the f,ame with it coming off the stick of Dave Robinson. Third period goals by Joe Kenda and Rick Schilbe were all the Farm Supply needed to capture the B title and $140.00 prize money. Referee Gerald Shantz and Paul Morrison handed out a total of 15 minor penalties with Mac Leans drawing 10 of those. The 'B' championship trophy was presented to the Farm Supply by Doug Kincaid of Zurich Home Hardware. A Final The 'A' final featured J.M.R. Electric of Huron Park and The Tenderspot froth Zurich. J.M.R. proved to be the top team of the tournament as they edged out the Tenderspot 5-3 to take home the A trophy and a cash prize of $225.00. After a scoreless first period J.M.R. came out with two quick goals early in the second. Shawn Rottean and Greg Parsons accounted for the two goals. Bill Hoffman narrowed J.M.R. lead to one goal as he scored at the 5:43 mark. Jim Bedard evened the count at two a minute later with a goal assisted by Glen Zirk. J.M.R. then came back witt three unanswered goals to a most ensure them of the vic ory. Cliff Hicks counted for two of those goals while Ha old Eberhardt added the single. Bill Hoffman added his second goal of the game to round out the scoring. Referee's Pat Bedard and Kevin McKinnon handed out nine minor penalties with the Tenderspot picking up seven. Don's Food Market scoring was a well balanced effort with all six goals being scored in single fashion. As things got under way Sunday morning C.G. Farm Supply advanced to the 'B' final by pulling off what had to be the upset of the tourney as they defeated the highly favored Don's Food Market by a 6-3 count. In one of the closest con- tests played Zurich Wood Products hung on to edge out MacLeans of Exeter by a 4-3 count. The 'A' division semi-final saw two Zurich entries battle for the right to advance to the final. The Tenderspot held off an attempted come- back by the Wood Products and pulled off a 4-2 win. Joe Kenda gave Zurich a one goal lead at the end of one period after cashing in a Hold surprise party By MARY CHISSEL • Varna The Hayter family sur- prised their sister and aunt Florence Routzon with a party on her eightieth birth- day. It was held in the Varna Hall on Saturday evening. Progressive euchre was played. Winners were: ladies' high. Eileen McLean: ladies' low, Marion Hayter: men's high, Elmer Hayter: men's low, Russell Hayter: travelling lone hand. Margaret Upshall. Elmer Hayter gave a humorous address, and cards and gifts were presented to Florence. Lunch and birthday cake. were enjoyed. We'd like to welcome a new baby. a boy, born to Mack and Janet Webster on Thursday. Bad weather again caused a poor turnout for the Orange Lodge euchre party on Friday night. There were five tables. Ladies' high was won by Ferne Baker, low by Debbie Rathwell. Men's high went to Charles Reid, low to Harry Baker. Winners of draw prizes were Bill Chessell, Mabel Reid, Charles Reid and Harry Baker. Dean, Phyllis and Paul Aldwinkle, Joan Grunewald and Elva Webster attended the Memorial Service for the late Morris Taylor in Gravenhurst last Wednes- day. The sympathy of the community is extended to members of his family. 1 by all of us at the 50's dance on Saturday. It was a big success with a full arena and most were even dressed in clothes (styles) from that year - what a change from now. A good selection of music and songs from that era were played by a London disc jockey. Also thanks to judges; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Haberer and Mr. and Mrs. Claire Deichert for picking out the winners for the most original outfits. The figure skating club would like to thank all those who made it possible. A nice lunch was also enjoyed by everyone afterwards. fro* skating Just a reminder to the kids there is still free skating at the arena on Saturday after- noon from 2:15 to 3:45. Well placed in festival Some members of the Zurich and area Figure Skating club took part in a Great Lakes Winter Skating Festival on Saturday January 23 at Hockey Land in London. In the free skate, Cathy Merner and SonyaShantz placed 5th. Andrea Hendrick placed 7th; Lisa Bedard, 10th and Debbie Bedard, 12th. Cathy and Sonya also did preliminary figures, but results were not available. The club is very proud of their performances as they were competing among several other children. Personals Keith Thiel returned home recently after spending a month in San Diego visiting with his daughter there, Miss. Joanne Thiel. Congratulations to new parents Brenda and Walter Vermunt RR 2 Zurich who had a boy born on Friday January 15 at St. Joseph's Hospital. This is the couple's second child. "Brian Walter" is a grandson for Lionel and Rebecca Wilder and Marinus and Joanne Vermunt, both of the Zuric i area. Also Liz and Gary Masse Grand Bend are happy to an- nounce the arrival of their third child, a girl who was born early Monday morning January 25 at South Huron Hospital Exeter. She is another grandchild for Marinus and Joanne Ver- munt and Leo and Theresa asse, RR 2 Zurich. Best wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to Nete Oesch and Madeline Gelinas who are both patients in Victoria Hospital London and to Edwin Regier who is also in the hospital. A reminder to everyone that tomorrow Thursday 28 is the paper drive at 6:30 and still is every last Thursday of the month. Jordan Robert infant son of John and Lesley Jeffrey was baptized on Sunday at St. Peters Catholic Church, St. Joseph's by Father Bensette with godparents being; Peter and Evelyn Jef- frey. A family get together was held afterwards at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Dolly Jeffrey at RR 2 Zurich. (This being her 21st grandchild). A total of 26 enjoyed supper. Congratulations to Kathy and Jean-Pierre LaPorte on the arrival of their first baby. a girl "Ardona Kathleen" who was born on January 7 at Victoria Hospital weighing 7,1b. I'S ozs.
