School expanding
A recent ad in the Hockey News tells about the
Huron Hockey School and its expanded operations.
For the year 1982 summer season, the Huron
Hockey School which got its start about 10 years ago at
the Huron Park arena will be operating in eight On-
tario locations along with Montreal and Findlay and
Cleveland in Ohio and Lansing in the state of
Michigan.
The Ontario locations in addition to the Stephen
arena at Huron Park will be in London, Arnprior,
Cornwall, Kingston, Brockville, Pickering and Ux-
bridge.
In the ad are 4listed endorsements from Doug
Riseborough and Steve Shutt of the Montreal
Canadiens and Mel Bridgman of the Calgary Flames.
The uniqueness of the Huron school is that it in-
cludes programs for professional players and each
year at Huron Park there are more than 40 established
pros along with draft choices and promising junior
candidates.
The Montreal Canadiens have been sending as
many as 10 players each summer. During 1981 Mario
Tremblay, Pierre Mondou, Doug Wickenhauser and
Mark Hunter were here and they are valuable
members of the Montreal club this season.
It must be gratifying to the original organizers,
Bill Mahoney, Brian Gilmour and Ron Mason to see
how well their original dream has progressed.
The basic idea behind the Huron Hockey School is
to provide the basic fundamentals of the game of
hockey with college and university instructors and
stay away from name stars of the NHL unless they
come to learn.
It's interesting to note in the same issue of the
Hockey News an ad from the National Hockey School
in Montreal listing Steve Shutt, Doug Risebrough and
Mario Tremblay as instructors. All, have been at
Huron Park as students and could be back again this
summer.
Dinner Getting Closer
This is, the last time we will be able to talk about
the ninth annual Exeter Lions Sportsmen's Dinner
before it actually happens.
Dinner chairman Doug Knowles and his hard
working committee have again come up with an out-
standing list of celebrities and speakers.
It's amazing the way -the dinner which has raised
thousands of dollars to help crippled children has
progressed since the idea was first brought up and then
put into practice in. February of 1974 by the late Don
Taylor.
It has grown each year from its humble beginning
itltAhe Exeter Legion hall to where the spacious
auditorium at the South Huron Rec Centre is filled to
overflowing with loyal sports fans.
Each year someone says who can we get next year
that is just as good or better than we have already
had? That's a good question. But, the answer is that it
does actually happen.
Not only does the calibre of speakers continue at a
high level, but, so do the master of ceremonies. This
year will certainnly be no exception. We know that
Father Joe Nelligan will have no trouble filling the
shoes of those that have gone ahead. Over the years,
the Mc's have included the late Tory Gregg, Bill
Brady, Lee Paul, Tuffy Knight, Graig Baynham, Jack
Donohue, Leo Cahill and Bruce Murray.
The Ontario Provincial Police pipe band will again
be in attendance to provide the serenade musical ac-
companiment as the guest speakers and celebrities
march in.
Making her third appearance at the dinner as the
local representative of crippled children will be
Christine Easterbrook. Christine always does an ex-
cellent job of speaking and is a delightful person to be
associated with.
Late additions to the Sportsmen's Dinner are
former Toronto Maple Leaf Mike Pelyk and Lori Baier
and Lloyd Eisler of Mitchell and Seaforth, respective-
ly who won silver medals in the senior figure skating
competition in Russia recently.
According to our latest report tickets are getting
very scarce. If you don't have one yet, make a quick
phone call to a member of the Exeter Lions club. It's
an excellent way to spend $30 with all profits from the
dinner going to aid cripple children in this area and at
the Thames Valley Treatment Centre.

SH girls volleyball
teams get. victories_
Playing like a team of
seasoned veterans, the South
Huron junior girls volleyball
team split both their ,mat-
ches against Seaforth and
Wingham in a regular season
tournament, Wednesday in
Wingham.
In close, lengthy games
the scores were as follows:
13-15, 15-8 against Seaforth;
15-11, 11-15 against
Wingham.
"For this point in the
season, considering how
little game experience
they've had, the girls are
playing very well as a unit,"
said coach, Pat Rowe, after
the tournament.
The team showed im-
mense improvement in their
serve reception from last
week's poor performance.
Evidence of the team's
improved play were the
lengthy games, some of
which lasted longer than half
an hour.
The- team's serving was
much improved, as well, as
Kendra Arthur and Pauline
Brand both served far more
than 15 points each.
The team embarks on a
busy schedule which will
play three of the next four
days. Today the Panthers
attend a regular season
tournament in Goderich.
Thursday they play in
Seaforth and Saturday they
will attend a tournament in
Strathroy.
Senior volleyball
Three victories and one
loss at Wednesday's regular
season tournament in
Wingham gives the South
Huron senior volleyball team
second place in the Huron
league and, according to co -
coach, Joe Fulop, is a sign of
things to come. "We're just
now starting to come
together as a team," said
Fulop, Thursday.
Patti Willis's blockbuste{
serves carried South Huron,
to a convincing 15-5, 15-6
wins over Seaforth and a 15-5
score over first place Madill.
After leading 10-1 in the
final game against Madill,
South Huron's seemingly
impregnable defence broke
down and the Panther's
dropped the cliffhanger, 14-
16.
Ronnalee Bogart and Lori
Brand played exceptional.
games, according to Fulop,
as the Panthers were able to
coordinate their setting and
spiking games for the first
time this season. Leslie
Hunter-Duvar and Cheryl
Cann had steady per-
formances, as well.
As well as their regular
season tournament, Wed-
nesday in Goderich, the
team will play exhibition
matches, Thursday in
Seaforth and Saturday at a
tournament in Strathroy.
