Interim billings to b* used
Council plans four tax payments
Zurich council' Thursday -
night passed a bylaw
authorizing the collection of
municipal taxes on a four
payment system for the year
1982 and each succeeding,
year.
Clerk Sharon Baker said
the interim billings will be
used on a current assess-
ment figure of *754.091 and
one-half of last year's tax
levy which will mean an in-
terim rate of 99.08 mills.
The first two payments
will be due March 1.and June
1 with the final two on
September 1 and November
30 after the 1982 budget and
final tax rate has been set.
In the only appointments
made, Robert Merner. Alma
Westlake and Al Scott were
appointed to the recreation,
parks and community centre
board for the year 1982, Vic-
tor Dinnin will be on the
committee of adjustment for
a three year term aqd coun-
cillor Leroy Thiel will return •
as the village representative
on the Ausable-Bayfield con-
servation Authority.
Resolutions from the
township of St. Vincent ask-
ing all Canadians to stop"
paying sales tax and from
the toWnehip of Glanbrook
conceflIbig lowering of in-
terest rdes on loans and
mortgages were filed.
' On the resolution about in-
terest rates. councillor
Leroy Thiel commented,
"That subject has been
pounded home so often they
should 'soon get the
message."
Council learned that
Huron countyassessment
commissioner Herb Bowen
has resigned to take over
similar duties in Scar-
borough and East York.
Zurich wilt likely be the
scene of two district
municipal meetings during
the year 1982.
The'19824pring meeting of
District 7 of the Ontario
Municipal Electric Associa-
tion will be held May 19 at
the Zurich Community Cen-
tre and councillor Leroy -
Thiel received support from
council to invite the Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation
Authority to hold .their
December meeting in
Zurich.
A six month extension has
been granted to Mothgack
Development Corporation
for draft plan approval for
the Parkside subdivision.
In a special meeting held
December 21. council agreed
with the recommendation of
the Zurich and area fire
board to purchase a monitor
system from Motorola Elec-
ironies Sales at a cost of $8,-
888 with the village's share ,
being $2,748.
Council also learned that
4he f ire board havedecided to
keep the percentage of costs'
the same for 1982 and that
assessment figures be
reviewed annually.
Co-ordinate duties to
host Swiss bantams
A number of organizations
in Zurich will be involved in
the February 21 visit to
Zurich of a bantam hockey
team from Switzerland.
At Thursday's regular
meeting. members of coun-
cil agreed to participate by
meeting the bus when It
arrives and hosting a media
reception following the
game.
The Zurich Minor Athletic
Association will be responsi-
ble for 'co-ordinating the
game which gets underway
at 2 p.m. and the Chamber of
Commerce will be in charge
of the banquet while the
'Lions will handle ticket
sates, advertising and gate.
Admission will be $2 for
adults and it for students.
The Swiss team wilt take on
the Zurich bantams coached
by Paul Morrison.
Gifts of hats, pins and
weeples with .village
emblems will be exchanged
between individual players
and the visiting and host
municipalities.
In council discussion,
reeve Fred Haberer said,
"This is a good chance for
the promotion of our village
and hockey."

helmet to incoming fire chief Bob Merner. Merner took over the duties on the first of
January. As a community service, Zurich fire calls will be answered by personnel from
O'Connor Ambulance.
Skaters raise $900
Despite stormy weather
outside on Saturday the
children of the figure skating
club went ahead with the
skate-a-thon and for their
efforts raised over $900 in
pledges. Proceeds will be
used for the clubs activities.

sponsored someone!)
I sure hope the weather
man co-operates this
Saturday so we can make it
to the 50's dance at the

WI card party
The women's institute held
their first card party last
Wednesday night at the
town hall with five tables in
play.
Winners were - ladies high,
Edith Hohner; ladies low,
Elizabeth Grainger; men's
high, Arnold Merner; men's
low, Harvey Hohner; lone
hand, Eileen Consitt; lucky
cup, Bill Watson.
All enjoyed lunch af-
terwards.
The next euchre is
scheduled for Monday,
January 25 at 8:00

and will have a cast up to her
elbow for a couple of months.

cast and will be off work for
awhile now. Hope they all get

A religious rock group
from Windsor called
"Appler" entertained those
at the Lutheran Church on
Sunday evening along with
some from the Mennonite
and United Churches. It was
followed by a light lunch.
There attendance was small
due to. the bad weather.
Mrs. Margaret Kalbfleisch
and Mrs. Vera Haberer are
presently vacationing in
Florida.
In spite of the last . two
stormy weekends the
residents at the Maple
Woods apartments were able
to make the most of Wand
keep their chins up by having
a pot luck supper in the
common room on Sunday,
January 10.
Everyone brought along a
dish, followed by games
afterwards.
Then this Wednesday they
had a get-together to help
celebrate those having
Birthdays in January.
Being: Laura Gascho, Mary
Gerber, Connie Lewis, Ervin
Eckstein and Vic Dinnin.
Everyone enjoyed seeing
Mr. Risi's slides of a trip to
Switzerland this summer.
Marien, Hilda and Marty
Vanderoeck of RR 3, Zurich
returned home last Sunday
after spending a week in
Orlando Florida taking in all
the sights and especially
enjoyed going to Disney
World.
Mrs. Seleda Steckle
returned home Thursday
after a pleasant visit with
friends and relatives in the
Cambridge and Kitchener
area. Due to the severe
storm the stay was extended
a little longer.

Zurich spent a few 'days in
University Hospital last
week, and returned home on
Monday.
Mrs. Florence Denomme
Zurich along with her sister
Leona Bedard of Seaforth
pent a week in Troy,
Michigan at the home of the
former's daughter, Dolores
and Joe Stanton babysitting
the children while they went
to Las' Vegas.
Several ladies around town
are passing the winter
months by doing the
beautiful art of quilting.
Harold (Gib) and Dot
Stade spent a delightful
three week holiday recently
with their son Corporal
Richard Stade daughter-in-
law Marina and .grand-
children, Amanda and Lisa
in Kelowna, B.C.
Ruth Zielman spent last.
week in Toronto attending
the Ontario Milk Marketing
Board's annual meeting held
at the Royal York Hotel as
she was representing Huron
County as our Dairy Prin-
cess. Also the owner of the
Zurich Village Floral and
Gift Shop is now back in
business after the storm
damaged the shop.
Two bus trips are now
being arranged for anyone
that is interested in going
away for a day. The first one
is on Saturday, January 23
going to Kitchener to see the
Carlton Show Band (also
dancing) also taking in'the
Kitchener Market and a
smorgasbord ,supper for
more details phone Mrs. Gen
Doyle at 236-4088.
The second one is to see the
ice capades in Kitchener on
Sunday, February 14
(evening show). Tickets will
include your supper. If in-
terested in going contact Gen
Doyle or Mrs.ErnieDavies in
Hensall at 262-2129.

Zurich on the -arrival of their
son Jordon. Born on Wednes-
day. January 6 atSt.Joseph's
hospital. he arrived just
three days short of his
brother Jarrett's second
birthday_ He is a grandson
for Jim and Joy Hogg and
Dolly Jeffrey RR 2 Zurich.
Mrs. Patti Geoffrey
(Steve) is presently a
patient in St. Joseph's
Hospital and expects to be
there for a couple of weeks
while awaiting the arrival of
their second baby.
Happy birthday to Mrs.
Marie Gelinas and Mrs.
Madeline Gelinas (sister -in-
laws) who celebrated their
birthdays together on Mon-
day January 11.
Curtis and Mary Gingerich
were fortunate to be able to
leave for Florida Saturday
morning ahead of the snow
storm. They plan to spend
the rest of the winter there.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilmet
Pfaff and Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Becker recently
visited with relatives in
Kitchener. The Beckers are
also happy to have a new
great. grandson born on
January 3 to parents Joanne
and Joe Dewan of Granton.
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Robson
and son Patrick spent from
Saturday to Monday with his
parents. Mr. and Mrs.
Wilfred Corriveau. The Rob-
sons attended their nieces
wedding in Goderich on
Saturday along with other
family members from
Zurich (nee Ducharme) but
due to bad weather managed
to get hack early, safe and
sound.
