HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1982-01-20, Page 8Times-Advecwte, January 20, 1911 Well played game a , - i; Sports Spotlight By Ross Haugh Most of the credit for the great record so far this season by the Edmonton Oilers has been going to Wayne Gretzky. Sure, Gretzky is the big king pin for the Oilers, but, it takes more than that. Sid Abel summed it up pretty well on the radio broadcast from Detroit Sun- day night saying, "Besides Gretzky, the Oilers have a fair bunch of country hockey players who can skate and shoot and a sensational young goalie in Grant Fuhr." We haven't seen any attendance figures in the NHL this year, but, there is bound to be a sizable increase and this is again due to one person. You guessed it Wayne Gretzky. The Oilers not only have sell-outs at home, but, at almost every arena they visit. Sunday night at the Joe Louis arena in Detroit a record crowd of 20,628 turned out to see the Oilers and Gretzky. Edmonton will be back in Detroit Sunday, February 21 and two bus loads of area fans are ex- pected to attend. This writer hopes to be one of the spectators that night. Anyone else wishing to go by bus should call Doug Ellison at Small World Travel ,as quickly as possible. Only a few seats are left. An excellent . full two page article on Gretzky appears in the January 9 issue of the Sporting News along with a front page picture. Gretzky was named Man' of the Year by the Spor- ting News, the first hockey player ever to win this award, others considered were tennis star John McEnroe, boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, baseball pitcher Fernando Valuenzuela and football and basketball coaches Bear Bryant and Bobby Knight. Other winners in recent years were Denny McLain, Tom Seaver, George Brett and Lou Brock from baseball, golfer Lee Trevino, jockey Steve Cauthen, footballer O.J. Simpson, NBA Commissioner Larry O'Brien and Oakland A's ex -owner Charlie Finley. Getting back to the controversy on how Gretzky would stack up against players in the days of the six team NHL, a hall of Famer has thrown in his two cents worth. Glenn Hall who is listed as one of the great goalies of all times along with Georges Vezina, George Hainsworth and Terry Sawchuck says Gretzky "is the greatest player I've ever seen" Hall went on, to say, "Some day Gretzky will get 250 points in one season, 100 goals and 150 assists." Bobby Clarke of the Philadelphia Flyers made an interesting comment after Gretzky scored five time on December 30 including his 50th goal of the season. Clarke said "There's nothing left to say about him that already hasn't been said. And none of that was adequate." South Huron All Stars The annual South Huron intermediate hockey league all star game will be played this Friday night at the Zurich arena and it should be a dandy. In previous years it was a battle between the north and south but this time around because of fewer teams it will be the defending champion Zurich Buckeyes against the other four teams. It's the top players from the Exeter Mohawks, Centralia Marauders, Hensall Sherwoods and Cen- tralia College Saints going against the Buckeyes. All star manager Lewis Mitchell of Exeter and coach Ron Funston of the Marauders are predicting a win for their team, Mitchell told us, "The Buckeyes think they can win, but, we will given them a run for their money. We have the cream of the crop." The reply from Ron Rader of the Buckeyes was "The story" will be told on the scoreboard. We are still the champs." All in all it should bean interesting exciting game. Face-off time is 8 p.rn. While on the all star topic, the north scored a decisive 11-5 win over the south in Saturday's annual Junior 'D' game in Lucan. Unfortunately we were unable to make the game due to big snowdrifts and nil visibility in the Crediton area Saturday afternoon. . Brian Mercer of the Hawks was the scoring star for the north with a four goal performance. Rich Fletcher, also of Exeter was in goal for the third period and allowed only one goal. Other Hawks in ac- tion were Bill Glover and Preston Dearing. Appearing from the Lucan Irish were goalie Ed Dobinson, Doug Latta, Jamie Shipley and Keith Hartwick. A special thanks to Hawks coach Ron Bogart for pinch hitting for us and providing the information that is included in the all star story elsewhere on these pages. Minor Hockey Week This week is being recognized across Canada as Minor Hockey Week. This is the time again when the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association take pride in setting aside a special week to join with all Canadians in a tip of the hat to thousands of youngsters and volunteer workers who are the lifeblood of our national game. Prominent in this year's campaign will be Charlie Brown's friend Snoopy who has joined the tribute to minor hockey on some 60,000 posters being sent across the country. The centre of all attention during this week are Canada's young hockey players themselves. This is their time. It's when parents, coaches and all others who devote so much time, interest and help to the developement of the game are asked to take a back seat. Minor hockey is designed to help build characters in young Canadians and at the same time to teach them the skills of our national game. Add to dinner Another celebrity has been added to the list of head table guests for the Exeter Lions Sportsmens dinner set for the South Huron Rec Centre February 2. The latest athlete confirmed is Warren Cromartie of the Montreal Expos. Tickets for the dinner at $30 are still available from any member of the Lions. Get yours early and don't miss out on an excellent evening of entertain- ment. 1 Mercer leads north Brian Mercer of the Exeter Hawks scored four goals to lead the North to a convincing 11-5 win over the South in Saturday's annual OHA Junior "D" Western division all star game.
